AIBU to not want fizzy drinks at my kids party

So to be clear I'd bought the diet, caffeine free varieties, plus other homemade fizzy stuff just so they're not missing out (yes I know about the sweetners but it's a one-off). So when a parent turns up with 40 cans of sugar loaded drinks and they all run to grab them before I've even noticed or had a chance to offer anything else... its very annoying! Cue spirited, cheeky kids turning into little vandals - tantrums and tummyaches galore... not an exaggeration.

In 14 years I have been hosting and going to kids parties I could count on 1 hand the amount of times I have seen any type of fizzy drink provided. Its really not the norm at a kids party.

Fruitshoots, Squash diluted in a jug then distributed into party cups or those big boxes you get of little orange and blackcurrant cups where they pierce the top with a straw is what I have seen at nearly every party.

Why would anyone as a guest take food/drink to another persons party to give out behind the hosts back... thats utterly bizarre, not to mention dangerous as they dont know the other kids dietry requirements.

onelittlefrog · 23/05/2022 14:16

Yes.. we're not 'debating whether sugar causes hyperactivity', it's just scientific truth that it doesn't.

Obviously it gives your body fuel and energy.

It doesn't make children behave badly, any more than they would after refueling with a nutritious meal.

That doesn't mean it's good for them, there are many reasons not to drink to much of it, but it doesn't cause disruptive behaviour.

cofingalthetime · 23/05/2022 14:18

Haven't read the whole thread, but OP you should watch on youtube, supernanny does this experiment where they replicate a birthday party for 40 kids. 20 kids have the sugary drinks, and pop, 20 kids have the healthy sugar free party food.
They ask the parents whether their kid has had the sugar or not. Nearly all of them said their child HAD had sugar as they were "hyper". They were all wrong!!!! There was no difference in the children's energy levels, or behaviour. They were all excited because it was a PARTY. What age is your child - I think you're pretty OTT tbh

TonyBlairsLover · 23/05/2022 14:19

Bro shush it’s pop not methadone u div

suzyscat · 23/05/2022 14:22

Ugh a load of kids came to a party I hosted with their own pop. Luckily just for them, I was stunned. Didn't say anything, but I didn't realise kids in year 2 drank pop. If my kids did they'd be unbearable. If I'm going to my kids 9 tea spoons of sugar (+ caffeine) it's going to involve plenty of fibre to lessen the hit. Grin

I'm not going to get annoyed at what people choose to feed their own kids, but I think bringing it for everyone is vexing.

peachescariad · 23/05/2022 14:23

Mine are older now (early 20s) but I never provided fizzy drinks at their parties - absolutely no need to and tbh they never went to one that did.

As the host, it’s up to you what crap you do and don’t want to provide.

But I think the sugar rush has been disproven and so I don’t really see the difference. I don’t see how sugar would give a tummy ache?

Yes I remember reading about an experiment where the kids were invited to a party and as parents dropped them off they saw lots of sugary thing, the following week a 2nd party where the parents saw lots of healthy food. When questioned the parents said they kids were hyper the first week and fine the second. They didn't know that the children had the healthy food the first week and sugary stuff the next week.

We see what we expect to see.

londonrach · 23/05/2022 14:27

I'm sorry but there no way I'd want my child to drink the diet stuff sue to the awful chemicals in them. Proper coke although not great is better. However it very strange a parent brings own drink unless child has allergy. I'm sure you have squash and water available too. However I'd let it go now.

Indeed. There is a lot of that going on on here. Confirmation bias.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 23/05/2022 14:30

Yes, sugary drinks are crap. But get a grip. It was a party and someone turned up with a contribution.

Did anyone die?

LadyDanburysCane · 23/05/2022 14:30

Plenty of research out there that exposes the “sugar causes hyperactivity” myth.

Can somebody pleas explain why caffeine free diet coke is so poisonous because I bloody love the stuff

GlitteryGreen · 23/05/2022 14:37

I think it's really rude!

I know lots of people don't mind their children having fizzy drinks, but lots also don't allow them, so I definitely wouldn't turn up to someone else's event laden with 40 of them Confused .

GoodJanetBadJanet · 23/05/2022 14:38

I've voted YABU by accident.
I don't think there's anything wrong with not wanting to give your kids fizzy drinks when they're younger (I didn't either.)
Plus, it's really weird and rude to turn up to a child's birthday party which you know is being catered by someone else and bringing a load of cans of drinks!
I'd be a bit pissed off. Like they don't think what you're providing is good enough. (Bar allergies of course)

The artificial sweeteners.

I would really rather have one can of proper code a week, with all the sugar, as a yummy drink treat than have unlimited diet coke with all the ariticufl chemical sweeteners.

Obviously fizzy juice on the whole is bad for you, and they all have crap in them but no need to add even more artificial crap.

DaisyQuakeJohnson · 23/05/2022 14:44

I'm a bit surprised 10-yr-olds were having tantrums and acting like vandals after some cans of Coke.
But fwiw OP I'd definitely have a headache and upset stomach if I drank more than one can of full sugar Coke.

Neverplayleapfrogwithaunicorn · 23/05/2022 14:54

Has this parent been to one of your parties before? It Sounds like they knew it was going to be a sugar free elderflower cordial kind of affair and thought they would spice it up!

Its not fair to the party host at all but at the age of 10 I would not loose sleep
over a can of coke at a party.

Mysisterlivesinbicester · 23/05/2022 14:57

I was going to say the 'sugar rush' was a total myth, but I have been beaten to it several times over. I was also going to say that diet drinks are the work of the Devil, but have been beaten to that, too. Probably because both things are true.

All I know is that artificial sweeteners make me very ill. GP has told me to avoid them.

Memyselfandfood · 23/05/2022 15:16

Anorthernlass · 23/05/2022 13:22

Yes about 3 each. Yes I should have hidden them but I was doing an activity with a few of them - maybe kids have stronger stomachs- if I had 3 full fat cokes I get a tummy ache and bad headache from the caffeine.

Yes Ofcourse you do Confused

the hyperactivity myth has long been disproven.
i’d much rather they had the full fat versions, sugar free coke tastes like crap anyway.

Anorthernlass · 23/05/2022 15:21

SmileyClare · 23/05/2022 13:55

Well yes, I don't think I've seen a 40 pack of cans in the shops. That would be huge and heavy, I feel like you'd need to bring it in on a trolley! How was it smuggled in Confused

The disappointing thing is that their behaviour wasn't linked to fizzy pop, meaning your son and his friends just turn into little shits at parties. Grin

Two hour packs. Didn't count lol.

Some people people have issues with different things.
i can’t stand coke zero, it’s foul,
i’ve drunk diet coke, pepsi and pepsi max for years and had no problems ( now cannot resist full fat 😆)
fanta free however gives me headaches.

LuckySantangelo35 · 23/05/2022 15:22

Justcallmebebes · 23/05/2022 13:52

It’s fizzy pop, not crack

Same thing as far as I'm concerned

@Justcallmebebes

Its not though is it?
you cannot buy crack down the local shop

Anorthernlass · 23/05/2022 15:22

Oops meant huge

CuriousCatfish · 23/05/2022 15:36

Mine were only allowed to parties that provided fresh water from mountain streams.
