Neighbour smoking weed - what would you do

Flopsy145 · 23/05/2022 07:55

We're on a new build road and one of the residents in the middle of the lane is constantly outside the front of his house smoking weed in his work van, I personally hate the smell and if our windows are open it gets in as he's only 2 doors down from us. I and another neighbour have young babies and yesterday he was outside smoking weed while I was getting her in the pram and it just stank. I'd say it happens several times a day.
One of our neighbours has suggested reporting to our developer who manages the road, another friend said to report to his work as he smokes in his work van. This would be anonymous but I'm sure he would figure it out.
But none of that sits right with me and I'm considering just going up to him next time he's out smoking and politely asking him to do it elsewhere, but then if it goes poorly that's then a potentially quite awkward relationship established.
Or do I just leave it even though it really is bothering us and the surrounding houses
So essentially asking wwyd.
If it makes a difference he's in rented, I'm shared ownership and the other houses are just owned.
Yabu - leave it, you don't want to make it awkward
Yanbu - say something directly to him or escalate to the developer

Driving when he’s stoned? That’s a problem and I would report him for that to the police and his employer. Bothering your neighbors with weed smells if you’re at home at night and not going anywhere until you’re sober again in the morning is one thing and definitely antisocial and annoying, but driving right after you’ve been smoking weed is something else as in it is really a danger and could potentially kill someone. I wouldn’t mention it to him as he might be an addict if he’s doing it so early, hiding it apparently for his gf by smoking in his van, if you say something to him directly he might do it somewhere else on his way to work and there’s still the risk to others on the road. Please report him. It sucks that he will probably lose his job and possibly his driving level too during his girlfriend’s pregnancy but that is nothing compared to someone losing their life.

Yep it isn't cheap but since covid and not needing to attend a clinic it's very much available.

Would you report him for drinking out on the street? If not YABU.

He's not doing anyone any harm.

If he was doing it in a vehicle and then driving like this guy is, yes I bloody would!

sapphire clinic saw my friends elderly mother with chronic back pain. has been a game changer for her

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 23/05/2022 09:16

You know people can legally get prescriptions for weed? (privately)
Sitting in a van smoking weed isn't ideal though. He's technically behind a wheel under the influence. Maybe he things it smells less in the van than in the garden or outside his door.

Is it really the smell you really object to or the fact you think he's doing something illegal?

Miffee · 23/05/2022 09:19

@NettleTea @MayorDusty
Thank you so much.

EastYorksLass · 23/05/2022 09:27

Just mind your own business and get on with your life

Merryclaire · 23/05/2022 09:30

Does he have a decent sized garden? If so, can he go and stand to the bottom of that to smoke? Is he a laid back stoner type? If so I wouldn’t worry too much about riling him up, and would ask nicely to move it further away.

OneTC · 23/05/2022 09:36

My neighbours asked me to smoke somewhere else so I did.

Most people don't want the confrontation when they're doing something that's likely illegal

Branleuse · 23/05/2022 09:37

Id act confident and ask him if he could go and smoke it elsewhere as its stinking the street out, and that youve had comments from visitors and you think maybe he doesnt realise how strong the smell is and how much it carries.

I wouldnt jump straight into grassing someone up thats not giving you any actual trouble. Having friendly or neutral neighbourly relations is so important.

Report him to the police and his employer for drug driving. If you feel you can't make that call, message me with the details and i will call them.

Jesus christ Hmm

Peanutwaffles · 23/05/2022 09:41

Go and have a chat with him. Tell him you don't want to be a pain but it is bothering you. Then escalate if it makes no difference.

Grapewrath · 23/05/2022 09:50

OP mind your own business and get on with your life. Him smoking a bit of weed really isn’t the end of the world

Rosehugger · 23/05/2022 09:58

Is he smoking weed then driving? That's the element I would be concerned about. Definitely a police matter. I don't care what people smoke or drink, but getting behind the wheel after is inexcusable.

I'm having real belly laughs. What a wild lot

Badger1970 · 23/05/2022 10:02

Take a photo of him smoking it by the van, then send it to his employer.

I'm an employer myself and would be furious if this was one of my staff.

godmum56 · 23/05/2022 10:02

Miffee · 23/05/2022 09:10

Privately? Can you get it for chronic pain? My great aunt suffers terribly but currently isn't eligible on the NHS but I have read (good) research that suggests cannabis would really help but I can't convince her to try it illegally and all other options seemed like dead ends outside if a few specific conditions.

before you spend loads on a clinic, my neighbour has dreadful trouble with her back and could hardly walk. She tried CBD gummies and the result has been miraculous....now yes it might be placebo effect but worth a try. i think it was the Holland and Barrett ones.

CupidStunt22 · 23/05/2022 10:04

Multiple times a day, in his work van? Doesn't he, you know, go to work, in his work van?

QuirkyTurtle · 23/05/2022 10:28

We smoke weed in our back garden. If it bothered my neighbours I would hope they come and talk to me about it or send me a message or something, not bloody report me, that's so petty.

RampantIvy · 23/05/2022 10:38

It sounds like he is smoking before work, then driving. People who think this is OK needs to give their head a wobble. I wouldn't report for smoking in the street even though it is unpleasant, but I definitely would if I was 100% certain that he was driving under the influence. It is as bad as drink driving, which I would report, and have done before.

Someone who is driving under the influence of drink/drugs is everyone's business.

Furrbabymama87 · 23/05/2022 08:04

Then don't be a grass.

We're not at primary school or in the Sweeney. 🙄🙄

HelenHywater · 23/05/2022 10:44

Those who are saying it's no big deal - the smell is really horrible. I loathe it. Someone sits on a bench near my house and smokes every day (starting before work) and I can smell it as soon as I leave my front door. It's just horrible and antisocial. When this become so normalised?

Branleuse · 23/05/2022 10:51

you dont have to be in primary school or in the sweeney to understand that most people just want to get on with their lives, and that going out of your way to cause trouble for people who havent even said or done anything to you is a dick move.
Dont you think the police have better things to concentrate on right now than someone having a smoke. Hes not dealing to kids. The liklihood is hes sitting in his van to keep it out of the house, but doesnt know that its bothering anyone.
I dont even know why the stuff is still illegal considering the statistics show its relatively safe as far as drugs go, even compared to legal ones.
Let the man have a smoke, but if its stinking out the street, ask him to go do it in his garden

Honestly until I read some of the replies on the post it was the smell that bothered me, cigarette smoke I don't mind the smell of but weed makes me feel sick. However now I've read some of the replies about him driving under the influence I'm now more concerned about him driving around stoned. Saying that it's not my place to go and lecture him about driving under the influence, or is it I don't know, but perhaps someone raising it with him that the smell is a lot might just make it clear that it has been noticed. Even if I don't report him, there's plenty of people on our road who would.

@Merryclaire To clarify they are in a flat with no garden so he smokes in the van and is not trying to hide it from his gf who I've seen come out of the house to her car etc while he's been doing it. And not laid back stoner type, but not unfriendly

I think from reading the posts I've realised speaking to him first is probably the best way forward. I'll say it casually next time I'm out there and see him that it's quite a strong smell, I don't want to confront him all Aggy and risk him flipping out and it just being forever awkward.

@CupidStunt22 I see him smoking on weekends multiple times a day, on week days it's from 5pm onwards when he's home, he leaves pretty early so I've never seen him smoke before work, but have seen him drive on weekends after smoking. So can't say he smokes and works, just that he smokes and drives on weekends
