Neighbour smoking weed - what would you do

We're on a new build road and one of the residents in the middle of the lane is constantly outside the front of his house smoking weed in his work van, I personally hate the smell and if our windows are open it gets in as he's only 2 doors down from us. I and another neighbour have young babies and yesterday he was outside smoking weed while I was getting her in the pram and it just stank. I'd say it happens several times a day.
One of our neighbours has suggested reporting to our developer who manages the road, another friend said to report to his work as he smokes in his work van. This would be anonymous but I'm sure he would figure it out.
But none of that sits right with me and I'm considering just going up to him next time he's out smoking and politely asking him to do it elsewhere, but then if it goes poorly that's then a potentially quite awkward relationship established.
Or do I just leave it even though it really is bothering us and the surrounding houses
So essentially asking wwyd.
If it makes a difference he's in rented, I'm shared ownership and the other houses are just owned.
Yabu - leave it, you don't want to make it awkward
Yanbu - say something directly to him or escalate to the developer

We live in a converted old building and the way it is structured is that we all overlook an enclosed shared area.
One neighbour used to come into the shared area to smoke cigarettes every 30 mins or so, probably not realising that the smell and smoke lingered for ages and made the area unusable by anyone else. She stopped when this was politely pointed out.
Another neighbour is a heavy weed smoker. He works from home (as do most of us who live here) and spent most of the day in an upstairs room with the roof light open and again, the smoke drifting out into the shared space. Everyone got a lungful of it during summer when we all have our windows open.
A polite word was had and he moved into the front bedroom- problem solved for the neighbours and he was able to continue his habit.
No need for stalking or reporting.

Anyone smoking cannabis is likely to be over the drug drive limit for between 3 to 5 days.
Personally I would pass the police his vehicle registration number and they'll do the rest,
I'd ask myself what I'd do if I knew he was drink driving.

Flopsy145 · 23/05/2022 08:23

@Miffee @MrsMoastyToasty I've seen him smoking at 9 in the morning so I would imagine he would drive stoned if he's smoking that early. He also does park on pavement/road not in an actual space so I'm surprised that hasn't been reported as a lot of our neighbours hate that when it's not like a one off for a party.

Not true. Its about 12 hours in the tests they use.

Does he drive under the influence of drugs?

That was what I was wondering. If he's driving a company vehicle under the influence then that's a problem.
If he's just standing around in the street then not such an issue unless the smoke is affecting other people.

In that case I am switching sides to the people who are advocating reporting him. He is not only driving stoned but if he is a manual worker he is handling dangerous machinery stoned.

Flopsy145 · 23/05/2022 08:26

@ZarquonsSandals I've seen him smoking at 9am, and then periodically throughout the day on a weekend, driving away coming back so yes he would be under the influence. On week days I've never been out early enough to see if he smokes before leaving for work

Are you sure he's not just smoking a normal cigarette in the morning?

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/05/2022 08:33

If he's driving while stoned it's a police matter.

Flopsy145 · 23/05/2022 08:39

@ImAvingOops definitely weed!

Unless he is dealing from the van the most the police would do is have a word - if they even did that.

Much better to have a friendly word to say you hate the smell and is there any chance he could smoke somewhere else.

Bobbins36 · 23/05/2022 08:41

Smoking weed at 9am before work and with a pregnant partner and soon to be child around? Think he won’t be driving stoned somewhere with a baby in the vehicle soon? Would be reporting if it was me.

SofiaSoFar · 23/05/2022 08:42

It's illegal to smoke anything in a company owned vehicle, whether that's a lorry, van or even a company car used exclusively by one person.

ChickensandCows · 23/05/2022 08:44

I would have a word, don't be all airy fairy about it actually say Hi I'm X from number X, I'm sorry to say but your weed smoking is really effecting us all and it's starting to smell really strongly inside my own house. Please can you park further away to smoke or do it elsewhere in general" simple. If he doesn't then shop to both his company and more importantly the police (might take more than 1 police report for them to be interested)

MayorDusty · 23/05/2022 08:45

Talk to him.
the driving under the influence is another matter but the smoking you can talk to him about.
for those that don't know medical cannabis is legal and widely available now just not on the NHS. It's fairly easy to get a prescription too.
ask him to consider vaping @Flopsy145 much better for neighbour relations.

Lalliella · 23/05/2022 08:47

Problem is, even if you report him to the police it’s not likely to stop him at other times of the day. I’d have a polite word and tell him how much it’s affecting you.

LowlandLucky · 23/05/2022 08:50

Report him to the police and his employer for drug driving. If you feel you can't make that call, message me with the details and i will call them.

FrankLampardsBrokenHand · 23/05/2022 08:57

I'd just ask him if he wouldn't mind smoking it away from your windows.

Other than that, I'm struggling to see what the huge deal is in all honesty.

easyday · 23/05/2022 09:01

I wouldn't be happy knowing an employee was driving while high - there's a zero tolerance for driving after taking drugs and even one puff could put you over the limit. A minimum of 12 hours after smoking one joint is recommended. 24 hours preferred. If he's smoking several times a day he is way over the limit.
If you saw him drinking in his work van how would you feel? It may not affect you but he could be lethal if he then started driving. Same thing.

balalake · 23/05/2022 09:04

As you are reasonably certain that he is driving possibly under the influence of drugs, then the police. Possibly employer as well, especially if the police in your area you do not think will act.

NettleTea · 23/05/2022 09:04

generally if its medicinal from a clinic, it will be delivered in a way thats suitable for lifestyle - so if he drives he would maybe have high CBD oil in the daytime, with THC at night. No responsible clinic would give him flower to smoke during the day if he is driving, as the last thing they want is to encourage lawbreaking around drug/driving when they are trying to promote their cause.
there is however a cancard that you can carry to prove your medical need if you are stopped with small amounts, that many who cant afford private prescriptions might utilise
This doesnt alter the drug/driving risk however, which is a whole other ballgame.

Not it isn't. Medical cannabis is not at all widely available.

MayorDusty · 23/05/2022 09:07

You don't even need a face to face now @Miffee you can do it all online.

anotherNCsorryfolks · 23/05/2022 09:09

Would you report him for drinking out on the street? If not YABU.

He's not doing anyone any harm.

Miffee · 23/05/2022 09:10

Privately? Can you get it for chronic pain? My great aunt suffers terribly but currently isn't eligible on the NHS but I have read (good) research that suggests cannabis would really help but I can't convince her to try it illegally and all other options seemed like dead ends outside if a few specific conditions.
