@Annigolden Haha thanks 😊 Yes!! Not listened to them for a while though.

A bump to top up garden water bowls if the rain hasn’t reached your part of the country yet.

ShakespearesSisters · 15/08/2022 14:22

My hog. I thought my husband was eating crisps noisily this week while I was upstairs and him down as we have all the windows open. Turned out to be my spiky little friend in the dry leaves in our flower bed. Worryingly I've seen her out in the day, they were taling about it on the news too. I'm keeping the cat food and water topped up.

Aren’t they cute!

So sad to think of the impact this heatwave is having on our wild animals and their struggle for food and water.

We have been camping out in the garden. I’m happy to report we seem to have lots of hedgehogs so I’ve doubled the food and water locations. One particularly nosy, noisy hog was sniffing around the tent. It was so noisy, my DC insisted I get up and check it didn’t have breathing issues!! It was fine…

We’ve also seen lots of bats. And a frog sitting in the tiny water dish I put out for the insects.

I also noticed my neighbour was sweeping out the hedgehog highway hole between our gardens yesterday. I think they feed them too.

@Thismonkeysgonetodevon welcome and thanks for the hedgehog news - it’s fantastic to hear you have lots of hedgehog visitors! Thank you for helping them 🦔

if you haven’t already, please log your hedgehog sightings here Hedgehog Street Big Hedgehog Map. Your data will help Hedgehog Street with their campaign to keep hedgehogs a common and familiar part of British life

Your other wildlife sightings are so interesting, what kinds of bats?

Aww, the baby hogs are adorable.

We discovered we have a hog a couple of weeks ago. We’re over the moon as we didn’t think we had any, many of the neighbours have gone down the paving stones/artificial grass/ concrete fence route. We made our garden as hog friendly as possible, and here he is, Sir Henry of Hoggerton. He comes really close to us, not a bit afraid, the second photo has DH leg in it at the bottom. Right now he’s having a good long drink, before he eats his cat food.

Loving Sir Henry of Hoggerton! @Aposterhasnoname Thank you for posting and sharing that lovely photo of him <detecting a fellow GoT fan from your username>.

@ShakespearesSisters <staaaaaaay with meeeeeeeee>!

Thanks for posting, funny that you thought it was your husband munching crisps!

Thank you for caring about hedgehogs. You are right to be concerned about your hedgehog if you’ve seen it during the day. Apologies if you’ve already read this, sharing the advice below from Hedgehog Street

If you spot a hedgehog at night and it looks healthy then the best thing you can do is leave it alone. Hedgehogs are wild animals and so can get very easily stressed by human contact. If the sighting is during the day – it could be a warning sign that all is not well. However, there are some exceptions, nest disturbance, females nest building in preparation for young to be born or feeding while young are asleep being some. Those hedgehogs will generally be moving quickly, appear well and only out for short periods of time. Monitor from a distance to ensure no problems develop and if in doubt call the British Hedgehog Preservation Society on 01584 890 801. However if you find a hedgehog staggering around, lying still (not in a nest), with flies around it or obviously sick or injured be it day or night, it needs urgent help so call the British Hedgehog Preservation Society on 01584 890 801

@Pricklesinperil our little hog looks very healthy, much bigger than i was expecting, definitely walks straight and very clever. One morning, 5.30 am ish i could hear the leaves rustle and looked out of the window. He was struggling to get onto our raised flower bed, gave up, wandered off tgen i saw him come into next doors garden and used the little gap between the rence and front wall where the soil creates a ramp. Talking to neighbours we have a few around. One had 3 hoglets under their decking last year and the neighbour doen the road has a couple of hog houses in their front garden.
Off to give him some food in a min.

@Pricklesinperil Thank you for the link and your advice. I have been lurking for a while on here and feeding my hedgehogs for around three years. But continue to learn.

I wonder how many more hedgehogs have been helped as a result of your thread?

I’ve no idea what type of bats they are?!

@Pricklesinperil Not at all, I’ve enjoyed reading your updates.

Thank you for the bats link. Our bats are so fast, just a quick flash and they are gone, plus it’s almost dark so I never get a proper look. I think I need some night-time binoculars!

Hi @Pricklesinperil and fellow hedgehog helpers.

I am sure they are using the house I have hidden. They certainly love my herb garden…

smallest one I have seen for a while last night.

Gorse · 19/08/2022 00:19

Gosh, I didn't know there was a hedgehog thread! Lovely to read so many different people with hedgies visiting. I've been feeding hedgies for around 5 or 6 years now, and the most I've seen at the same time is 3. My garden is a good size and has some unkempt areas with plenty of cover. I "catch" them on field camera every night, but here's a couple of pictures taken with the phone. My new dog was fascinated (and acting all silly). Luckily the hedgehogs are quite sanguine about being oggled by a dopey muppet of a canine. According to my video footage no harm comes to either, in fact the prickly ones carry on as normal.

Alan Frew on YouTube makes wonderful videos of the many hogs that live in his garden. He has 4 cameras, I think, and "catches" them getting up to all sorts of things. Well worth a look.

I love that there’s a thread for Hedgies! We have 2, one big, one small and the other day I saw an absolutely huge one casually crossing a busy junction. I got DH to stop the car and I got out and carried him to the hedgerow - it belted off. Not even a grunt of thanks!

our resident 2 come every night but keep pooing everywhere. I’m wondering if anyone has successfully litter trained a hog?!
