Do you *actually* watch TV with your kids?

My husband always say oh it's like that episode of Octonauts or Bloody cocomelon where this happened/the song goes like this?

When my kid watches TV, I am either off doing things that need done as it's the only chance I'll get, or I'm scrolling my phone ignoring the rubbish on the television! I'm never watching the show and taking in the storyline or the lyrics?? Am I the only one???

Depends what it is. I have a lot of time for Bluey and Hey Duggee. Most other shows I’m hiding in the kitchen drinking coffee.

orwellwasright · 21/05/2022 22:28

God no. Watching kids' TV is like being on drugs.

Momicrone · 21/05/2022 22:30

It depended/depends on the programme, peppa pig - yes, octonauts - hell no. Now they are older, we watch more TV together

Twizbe · 21/05/2022 22:30

I watch Bluey without the kids. I've just watched a YouTube video about some of the Easter eggs in the episodes.

Other stuff I zone out, but not Bluey.

mummabubs · 21/05/2022 22:31

I tend to watch the first ep or so with my 4 year old just to check I think it's appropriate. The exception is Bluey. I'd watch that by myself, bloody love it.

glamourousindierockandroll · 21/05/2022 22:32

Definitely zone out, though the Thomas The Tank movies on amazon are pretty good and have great songs.

Listen to the rollin' thundeerrrrrrrrr.....!

mummabubs · 21/05/2022 22:33

I will add to my comment that my DH never watches any of them and our son gets frustrated when he talks about a programme or asks a question that my DH has no clue about. I tend to use our younger child's nap to get things done around the house but appreciate this won't last forever.

SaffieSoph · 21/05/2022 22:33

Nope! Not the only one - we have a similar dynamic. My husband watches it all, knows all the characters and can even quote from the shows. I pay zero attention and never know any of the details. Feel a bit left out sometimes!

akittyisyou · 21/05/2022 22:33

Yeah. Maybe not every episode but I like to dip in and out enough to know what DD is consuming. Peppa and Blippi have been quietly done away with in our house because they were both too annoying.

CheapFoodShits · 21/05/2022 22:35

DS and I watch YouTube together, he's not really a TV lad anymore. Although, for some reason the Paw Patrol song was stuck in my head all day the other day. Despite DS not watching it for about 5 years now, I still knew every word 🤦‍♀️

AnotherEmma · 21/05/2022 22:35

Ha, I've been thinking about this over the last couple of days, as DC1 (5) is ill and has been allowed to watch more TV than usual. Most of the time I leave him to it and get jobs done. Or sit with him but look at my phone. It would be nice to actually watch stuff with him but I do find most of the stuff he watches to be pretty mind numbing. However, I've had some success with films lately - I am really looking forward to watching more film and tv together as he gets older. I do feel mean leaving him to watch by himself most of the time.

YetAnotherNam · 21/05/2022 22:36

You could offer me one million pounds and I couldn’t tell you the plot of a single episode of Paw Patrol.

I always found it impossible to stay focussed.

Bramblecrumble21 · 21/05/2022 22:37

We're the other way around. Although the latest thing she'll watch is paw patrol and I can't stand that. Love octonauts which was a favourite before paw patrol...I can name the characters when I watch my daughter involve them in some role play and my DH says 'you actually watch it'

Bloody Paw Patrol, I hate the damn thing.
DS is on a paw patrol phase atm (he had a lengthy one before that I was relieved to see the back of. Sigh.)
it's in my head now!

mowly77 · 21/05/2022 22:38

Yes but she only watches stuff I can actually tolerate. And I want to see what she’s watching as it has a huge effect. I mean the first few times … I don’t have a small child’s patience for watching the same show or film over and over again. She also likes the company. Anyway Bluey is one of the best shows on TV full stop; Hey Duggee & Sarah & Duck are pretty tolerable. Shite like Cocomelon or Paw Patrol doesn’t exist in our house.

She’s not yet 4 though. Not loads of screen time & not much agency. When she goes to school & has a more vested interest in what she wants to watch I guess I’ll leave her to it more.

She’s been watching a lot of Disney films with my sister though I’m like hmmm at some of them. But you can’t keep an almost 4 year old from enjoying princesses. I sound like an incredibly worthy twat but I much prefer Studio Ghibli. She still does love all the age-appropriate ones like Ponyo or Totoro if I put them on but she usually suggests Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella for the millionth time herself.

AnotherEmma · 21/05/2022 22:38

I like Storybots, I hope he has another Storybots phase!

mathanxiety · 21/05/2022 22:38

I used to all the time. Still have a very soft spot in my heart for Curious George. Still get a little twitchy stabby when I think of Caillou, and by the looks of the internet, I am not the only one. (US public TV is all the DCs watched).

autienotnaughty · 21/05/2022 22:39

Sometimes I'll sit and cuddle with ds while he watches something other times I'll get jobs done. We do watch films together and recently he's started to get into quiz shows so we watch them together. Use to love all the Disney tv shows with dd, Hannah Montana, Big time Rush, Drake and Josh, Victorious etc watched loads of them.

JohannSebastianBach · 21/05/2022 22:39

Yes if it's Ben and Holly. Mutiny on the Bunty!

saddowizca · 21/05/2022 22:45

I loved watching the Octonauts, Charlie & Lola, Ben and holly with my DD - I learned so much from the Octonauts am practically a marine biologist!

easyday · 21/05/2022 22:45

Yes I watched with my kids. Charlie and Lola were a favourite, the Night Garden I didn't care for. And the best thing was the bedtime story in CBBees as that meant day was done!

transformandriseup · 21/05/2022 22:46

I watch with my toddler and we talk about the program/characters. I can't say I really enjoy it though.

BerkyWithTheGoodHair · 21/05/2022 22:47

Not telly programmes, god no with the absolute drivel that passes for kids telly these days.
We do watch films together though, my kids are getting to the point of watching 12a and over now so it's not too much of a chore anymore.

IstayedForTheFeminism · 21/05/2022 22:49

DC are teens now so there's a lot of programmes we watch and enjoy together.

But when they were Cbeebies age? I sat with them but didn't pay attention a lot of the time. Some stuff was actually good though. I think childrens TV isn't as good as it was then so there was stuff I didn't mind watching. That could be rise tinted specs though!

JaninaDuszejko · 21/05/2022 22:50

DD1 and I have been watching Derry Girls together this evening, she's 14 though.
