I was the same but then I hadn't really sat down and watched an episode.

I alluded to the book 'The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler' above (sorry, I misspelled the surname) - it's 45yo old now, and I'm guessing many younger people won't have heard of it at all, but I think the premise is very interesting - and sadly still relevant.

It's carefully written to avoid using any pronouns for Tyke - the main character - but I think it would be a very rare reader who wouldn't have assumed that Tyke was male, owing to her best friend being a boy, her strong, forthright characteristics, cheekiness, athletic prowess, getting into scrapes etc. Only right at the very end does the teacher shout to tell her off, using her actual name: Theodora.

Bluey is a cartoon about a family of dogs who live in Australia. Dad (Bandit), Mum (Chilli), and their two kids - Bluey and Bingo. It's basically about family life with small children but, like PPs said, it challenges stereotypes. It's focused on a child's perspective of the world but there's lots there for adult issues too (in one of the episodes Chilli feels like a shit mum when all the other babies are hitting milestones faster than Bluey).

It's ace, recommend watching it.

As an aside, the suburb in Melbourne where they live has property starting prices of roughly $1,000,000 and a house the size/layout of what they have would easily be around $2 million. There is no way they could afford it on Bandit's archaeologist salary (around $80,000 a year if full time which he doesn't appear to be) and Chilli's airport security salary (around $40,000 full time which, again, she doesn't appear to be). The only way they could afford it would be via nefarious means which isn't that much of a stretch when you realise that one parent has insider knowledge of where to find ancient (and valuable) artifacts and the other has knowledge of how to smuggle them out of the country.. ..

I’m embarrassed that I know this, but Bluey’s family live in Brisbane. Property prices are significantly lower there than in Melbourne.

@Hospedia WOAH! 🤣

Loopyloopy · 22/05/2022 23:20

Definitely Brisbane - you can see the skyline in some of the episodes. The area that they live in is still pretty expensive, though.

A real estate agent identified Bluey's house to be in Red Hill/Paddington, which has a mean price of 1.1 million AUD. The house is a classic Queenslander with original features and is in an elevated position, which will push the price up.

Haudyourwheesht · 23/05/2022 08:09

Maybe they inherited. We've only met one set of grandparents I think?

Hospedia · 23/05/2022 08:30

Chilli's dad is still around

I voted YABU even though I also assumed Bluey was a boy the first time I watched it. It’s just sooo common for fictional animals to be male - think of books like “the Gruffalo” and “Dear Zoo” and how every single character in them has a male pronoun. Depressing.

So I was DELIGHTED when 3 minutes in she was revealed to be a girl.

Bluey is my favourite TV show of all time.

I think you need to get out more if you find that depressing. It's just not. Also, you realise the Gruffalo's child is a girl, right?

I know Bluey is supposed to be a girl, but with today's society it's probably a boy who tells everyone it's a girl.

FFS stop shoehorning trans stuff into every single thread.

Turns out there is a replica Bluey house in Paddington. That you can rent (it’s on Airbnb)

DD loves Bluey and I thought Bluey was probably a boy, having never watched it, just because (depressingly) the majority of children's programmes have male protagonists or main characters, or are very pink. DD put me straight this week.

It sounds like I should actually watch Bluey rather than letting her watch it on her tablet in her little living room corner blanket den.
