To think its an old fashioned name!

Talking with a colleague lately about common names from the 80s and 90s... the usual., Sarah, Laura, Becky, Lydia, Lindsay, Louise, Emma etc..

We then got talking about more unusual names we went to school with "Hester.. Paula..Hermione (way before Harry Potter 😂).."

I just cannot imagine a baby or small child being called Paula! I can't even imagine a person my age (30s) being called Paula!

Any other names you just cannot imagine as a baby/small child?

We've had a 5 yo Derek in the school I'm in. Also Margot. Never a lisa though in over 10 years. That name seems to have disappeared. Nor a Claire or a Steve.

I wish I'd called my kid Stacey. As in I would be "Stacey's mum".

I know 3 Jennifers, all in Scotland.
I also know of a toddler called Warren.

MsFannySqueers · 20/11/2022 14:18

Nothing wrong with a Fanny!

Wildhairfire · 20/11/2022 14:26

Why would you think Paula is an old fashioned name and weird for an adult? I'm a Paula, I'm 29, sorry if that bothers you 🙄

My 2 year old goes to nursery with a little Glen 😃he's a delightful kid with very cool parents, but before meeting him I would have always said Glen was a kind of Brian/Neil/Malcolm kind of name, and would have expected a Glen to be in his 50s.

Phyllis, Hilda, Linda, Maud, Madge, Gladys, Joyce, Jacqueline / Jackie, Ada, Agnes, Stanley, Alfred, Martin, Brian, Phillip, Anthony/Tony, Keith all dated names at the moment

There are some little Alfreds, Stanleys and Maud's around.

Other names like Linda are popular in other European countries for people under 30.

One thing living next to a nursery and two primary schools for about decade you get to hear lots of parents calling out to their child/children.

I know a 9 year old Malcolm.

I have a baby niece named Tamsin . I think it’s very pretty.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 20/11/2022 15:36

My husband is Alan and his brother is Gary. Can you imagine looking at your tiny baby and thinking “ah yes, he looks like an Alan!” He’s only 40 as well, so not like he was born in the 50s!

(Neither name is a family name either!)

BeatlejuiceBeatlejuiceBeatlejuice · 20/11/2022 15:41

My mum was born in the 50’s, she’s Gloria. I would be astonished at a baby Gloria 🤣

It's a fab name! I could definitely picture a hipster couple having a baby Gloria.

Arthur was my darling grandfather's name. I liked it, it was on my list, but my husband said a hard 'no'. There was a name I preferred in any case but I'm glad we crossed this one off as there are currently a lot of Arthurs around.

As to the mention upthread of 'Samantha', my father really wanted this name for me and my mum vetoed it. I'm SO grateful for this!

As a kid I always wished my name was Gloria or Sylvia - because they sound like gold and silver!

I have a name that was outrageous when I was born n the 1950s, so much so that I was regarded with pity. It’s deeply fashionable now.

soulinablackberrypie · 20/11/2022 17:48

I went to school in the early 80’s. A lot of Joanne’s, Leanne’s, Laura’s, Pamela’s.

Pamela surprises me a bit there - it feels a generation older to me. I think I only ever met one Pamela about my own age (I'm in my 50s) and she was of Indian descent.

LaMereDuChat · 20/11/2022 17:52

Ds has a Wendy in his class. She's 12. Must admit I did a double take when he said her name.

sukiwh · 20/11/2022 18:07

I went to school with countless Carlys (Carlies?), huge name for girls born in the late 80s. I think it’s very pretty and cute but seems to have fallen out of favour.

TheLostNights · 20/11/2022 18:14

Love the name Arthur especially shortened to Artie

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 20/11/2022 18:21

I can’t imagine a baby named Sharon, or Keith.

I know a teenage Jackie, Brian and Jennifer who’s names seem too old for them in a way, but I’ve known them for a long time and can’t imagine them being called anything else.

There’s a Fanny St in a town near me. Wife or daughter of some Victorian councillor I imagine. Must be a bit embarrassing giving your address if you live there.

There's a Crotch Crescent in my town!
