Does someone count as a Londoner if they're from a Greater London Borough?

Yabu - yes, of course!

Yanbu - no, you can only be a Londoner if you're from London London. A Greater London Borough doesn't really count

Debate taking place between grandparents (proper Londoners) vs modern generation!

FetchezLaVache · 20/05/2022 18:19

I voted YABU but as I'm from Oop North, anything I believe on the subject is bound to be wrong, therefore YANBU, effectively.

clumperoo · 20/05/2022 20:56

What you mean like Bromley or Croydon?

clumperoo · 20/05/2022 20:57

Because Bromley people think they're from
Kent snd rest of Kent thinks Bromley is London.

They're suburbanites

Takingabreakagain · 20/05/2022 21:00

I'm up north and anyone from Greater London would be from London to me. Just like I'd say I'm from my nearest city even though I don't actually live right in the centre just the suburbs.

DontPickTheFlowers · 20/05/2022 21:02

Lots of people born/brought up in inner London and then move further out so in that case yes.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 20/05/2022 21:02

I'd say they're from London but not a Londoner.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 20/05/2022 21:05

Also I've got that song stuck in my head now. Thanks for that.

autienotnaughty · 20/05/2022 21:05

Yer all soft southerner's t me dunt tha know?

artificialhells · 20/05/2022 21:08

Anything beyond zone 4 is a grey area imo

Phineyj · 20/05/2022 21:10

The boundaries changed in 1965. Maybe that's enough time to get over it. I feel it could be 😂.

Rory1234 · 20/05/2022 21:22

My parents were born and bred proper Londoners and I was born in London proper and lived there when I was little but have lived in Greater London (the very edge of it) since I was 4.

So I wouldn’t consider myself a Londoner even though I consider myself from London.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 20/05/2022 21:26

Anywhere south of Watford.

DialSquare · 20/05/2022 21:32

I'm a Londoner (born in Islington) and have always thought that anyone born in a London post code starting with E, W, N or S is a classed as a Londoner.

GlassTable · 20/05/2022 22:17

I'm a Londonder born and bred - Islington - and have moved out ever so slightly to zone 3. My family, also londoners, are now spread across zones 5 and 6. I still consider us all to be londoners!

I'm from Scotland and I think Bromley is in Kent, does that help? 😂

Don't you have to be born in hearing of Bow's bells and have a pearly jacket... 🤔

InconvenientPeg · 20/05/2022 22:30

I say I'm from London, I'd never say I was a Londoner, I was actually born in Sutton, but I live up north and there would be no point saying that, as it would mean nothing to the person asking. So for me it depends who I'm talking to! If I was talking to someone from Greater London/London, I'd be specific.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/05/2022 22:45

We used to live in pence/crystal palace. DD was born there. Well the hospital was Kent. I'd say she was a Londoner.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/05/2022 22:45

Penge! Damn autocorrect

eurochick · 20/05/2022 22:54

@TooMinty that's Cockneys - not all Londoners.

no that's a cockney

TooMinty · 20/05/2022 23:05

Oh I was doing well knowing where Bromley is but got dazzled by the pearly buttons and thought Cockney=Londoner...

When I worked in marketing, some people used to try and say everything inside the M25 was London 😱

I agree with this, but there's also the issue of the tube- I used to think that if your area has a tube station then it was part of London, but the tube goes out so far, and there are plenty of tube stations out of the London postcode areas..eg Barnet, Chingford, and even more extreme, Amersham and Chalfont.
And then there are areas which are in London but which don't have a tube.
So yes, I think the postcode criteria is the best indicator.

LakieLady · 20/05/2022 23:25

I grew up in Croydon but moved away over 30 years ago.

When I lived in Croydon/S Norwood/Upper Norwood, I didn't think it counted as "proper" London, but now it feels like it is.

mnnewbie111 · 21/05/2022 06:12

@DialSquare Barnet is London

Ifailed · 21/05/2022 07:05

unless your grandparents were born in the City of London, tell them they aren't proper Londoners either.
