Does someone count as a Londoner if they're from a Greater London Borough?

Yabu - yes, of course!

Yanbu - no, you can only be a Londoner if you're from London London. A Greater London Borough doesn't really count

Debate taking place between grandparents (proper Londoners) vs modern generation!

I live in London but I’m from the midlands. I don’t consider myself a Londoner.

HumbugWhale · 21/05/2022 07:11

I know someone from Southend who tells people he's from London!
I would have said Croydon was London but I'm not very good on the geography of Greater London.

Pinklady245612 · 21/05/2022 07:15

Same here. I was born and grew up in Kingston and also lived in Sutton as an adult, zones 4 and 5. If I'm talking to someone from anywhere within the M25 I would say this, but now we live in the Midlands I just say we're from London. I also wouldn't class myself as a Londoner

bluechameleon · 21/05/2022 07:16

To me, compass point postcodes are London, others are not-really London.

over2021 · 21/05/2022 07:17

Romford isn't London if that helps Wink

stopringingme · 21/05/2022 07:27

Barnet is a London Borough, which is in Hertfordshire with an Enfield postcode (EN).
I always said I was from North London when I lived there.

Nitw1t · 21/05/2022 07:28

I'm also from Penge.

London postcode / Bromley Borough / No tube

I'd describe myself as a Londoner, but it's a bit squishy around that south east border in particular.

DH is from similar area geographically in the NE of London (No London postcode, ever so slightly further out, but on the tube) and he would also describe himself as a Londoner.

RaininSummer · 21/05/2022 07:36

Lived in Essex in a London borough until an adult but tend to say Essex even though the area is referred to as east London now

steppemum · 21/05/2022 07:37

post code is the definer.

So Ilford, which seems to be still part of London = Essex post code, so no, not a Londoner.

That was always our criteria

ThePants999 · 21/05/2022 07:38

I work in Enfield. I don't live there so this doesn't apply to me, but you probably think those who do aren't Londoners. My take: if you live in a London borough, pay London taxes, vote in London mayoral elections and are served by Transport for London, you're obviously a bloody Londoner, and anyone who thinks otherwise has some really weird prejudice that's way out of date.

clumperoo · 21/05/2022 07:41

@ThePants999

Yes, that's a good answer

Basilbrushgotfat · 21/05/2022 10:10

Interesting replies, thanks!

Most of us agreed with the postcode idea, but my cousin apparently thinks they are a true Londoner because they were born in a Greater London Borough. They only lived there for a few months! 😆

@DialSquare Barnet is London

I didn't mention Barnet!

Wilkolampshade · 21/05/2022 18:08

Yeah, compass point postcodes is the thing. The Tube, particularly the Met', goes out crazy far and can't be relied on as an indicator.
