Toddler drinking beer

Cravingchocolatemousse · 20/05/2022 18:02

Prepared to be told I’m being a bit stuck up/boring/over the top, but I’m really not sure

Friend posted pics of lovely photos on hol with her guy and his toddler or his grandchild toddler. They took photos & a video of him letting her drink his beer. She pulled for it about three times and had a good old gulp each time, not sips. They then joked how that’s how she slept all night.

I suppose it’s quite funny, it was just three big drinks, I was a bit 😮

Not funny. Absolutely disgusting doing that to a child

Georgyporky · 20/05/2022 18:31

I'd have a word with your friend, rather than reporting it to SS or MN.
Was it real beer, anyway?

Saz12 · 20/05/2022 18:31

Are you sure it wasn’t just something that looked like beer (apple juice with lemonade in a pint pot...?). I can’t really imagine a toddler enjoying the taste enough to do it 3 times (mine was picky). DC used to love having lemonade with ice and lemon when we had G&T because it looked just the same and she could tell people she was “drinking wine” (because she was too young/ daft to realise that not all alcohol was called wine).

But no, 100% wrong for a young child to actually be allowed that.

whataloadabullocks · 20/05/2022 18:32

Wasn't gripe water originally watered down brandy?
When I was growing up it wasn't unusual to give watered down wine (this was in France though, so not sure if similar happened in the UK?)
You sure it wasn't nonalcoholic beer? Ds sometimes sips at Dh's beer, but it's nonalcoholic.

x2boys · 20/05/2022 18:32

Are you sure it was beer ,most small children wouldn't like the taste of beer I can't imagine a toddler gulping it .

AnotherTroyforHertoBurn · 20/05/2022 18:37

When DS was little he used to ask for a taste of DH's beer, we told him that the way to get the best taste was to dip his little finger in it and shake really hard to improve the flavour. Grin

We got away with that for years.

YANBU

Once by accident would have been funny.
Ive seen videos on you’ve been framed and the parents snatch the drink away straight away.

Doing it purposely 3 times is awful parenting and it’s depressing what people will do just for ‘likes’ from strangers off the internet.

Cravingchocolatemousse · 20/05/2022 18:53

Definitely a pint of beer, I was surprised she liked the taste too, I was waiting for her to pull her face. They were making jokes about she likes Grandads beer etc
No one said anything on the post/photos…that’s why I wondered if it was just me. But then I didn’t post anything/say anything either, I mean, it’s awkward 🤷🏻‍♀️

How do you know it wasn’t an alcohol free beer or a shandy. I’m not sure a 5 year old would even like the taste of beer.

FelixMadrigal · 20/05/2022 19:03

It’s illegal to give alcohol to a child under 7

girlmom21 · 20/05/2022 19:03

Do all the posters suggesting non-alcoholic beer not think if the parent was allowing their child to try that they would make a point of saying it's non-alcoholic?

I hate pictures of kids sitting with beers in front of them or trying alcohol for a few social media likes. It's gross.

Where? In the UK (maybe not Northern Ireland, not sure) it's legal to give a child alcohol at home from the age of 5.

Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic · 20/05/2022 19:05

That's disgusting behaviour from a parent, and dangerous to the child. I would in no way find this funny at all and would be surprised by anyone who does.

Cravingchocolatemousse · 20/05/2022 19:06

Def not non alcoholic as they were laughing and saying ‘No you’re not allowed that’ if it was non alcoholic, she could have a bit I guess? I don’t know as it wouldn’t even cross my mind to give a pint to a toddler and I’m a pretty chilled parent. Why do it?!

5 in England. Scotland and Wales.

francesfrankenfurter · 20/05/2022 19:25

Some people are stupid. Some of these people are parents.
The three gulps of beer alone won't be an issue. But I would wonder what else may be happening.

roarfeckingroarr · 20/05/2022 19:37

Not at all funny - and I'm happy to let my toddler hold my beer and pretend to sip it occasionally

mistermagpie · 20/05/2022 19:39

I've let my 5/6 year old taste a sip of beer (and I mean a tiny sip) but a toddler? I don't actually think it would do much harm, to be fair, as a one-off, but my main worry with this kind of thing is that if that's what they post on social media, what the hell else are they doing?

I work in a very rough area in Glasgow, I once saw a man smacking his child's backside really hard, about three or four times. The child looked about four. I was too scared to intervene (it's that kind of area) and froze and I've always felt terrible about that. Because if that's what he was doing in the street, what would he do behind closed doors? I should add that smacking is illegal here but even if it wasn't, it was abuse. I should have done something. Not saying you should too OP, this is not on that scale, but the point is similar.

Manekinek0 · 20/05/2022 19:40

My parents let me do this as a toddler and then I was having full glasses of wine by the age of 7. Looking back at the photos I was gulping beer whilst sat of someone's knee who had a lit cigarette!

I did let my children try small sips of alcohol but not until they were 6 or 7. I didn't want alcohol to seem like some rebellious, forbidden thing. Neither liked it and neither drink much now they are older teenagers.

Not in the UK it's not - it's perfectly legal at home from the age of five.

OP - how do you know for sure it was beer?

octagonspoon · 20/05/2022 19:49

Fucking FIL kept trying this on when DS1 was a baby. I had to slap it down pretty firmly.

I thought it was an older generations thing. Surprised there are total muppets of child bearing age who still think this is ‘funny’.

Hallyup89 · 20/05/2022 20:06

Idiots. I'd certainly report it to social services, even though they probably won't do anything.

Alcibiade · 20/05/2022 20:44

You are not being unreasonable. Can't believe that 26% of the votes in this poll are from people who think it's okay to let a toddler drink alcohol.

Crimeismymiddlename · 20/05/2022 20:45

I hate this, so wrong. When I was young it was common to give children a little sip, and once my parents let us have one sip, once, my brother quite liked it and the whole family found it hilarious. A gulp would not happen and they would never take a photo.
It would really make me worry what is not being put on sm.
