Does anybody here have PMDD?

It's ruining my life big time. I literally have a nervous breakdown for 1.5 weeks every month and another mini one during ovulation.

Have you found any type of contraception that helps? I've been apprehensive about trying any as I'm clearly v sensitive to hormone changes and don't want to make it any worse 😔

I’d love some advice on this too, as it’s so many years since I took hormonal contraceptives that I barely remember how they work, let alone brand names. My teen daughter suffers from extreme pmt, which I would class as pmdd but the gp seemed reluctant to diagnose . (But extreme aggression, violent outbursts, school refusal, irrational behaviour in the two week run up to a period, onset of period is like a switch and then everything’s ok for two weeks). I feel so much for her, and recognise resolving this issue as a starting point would be life changing.
The gp has just prescribed rigevidon, but having looked into it on mumsnet posts I’m so deeply concerned about posters that describe it as making them extremely angry, depressed, uncontrollable mood swings etc. I can’t risk any more extremes of behaviour (she’s 13). From research, it seems that some surgeries have blacklisted rigevedon?
I want to go back to the gp and ask for an alternative (Yasmin?) ,does anyone have any suggestions? Try the rigevedon? Push for something better?

WeAllLikeVindaloo · 23/11/2022 05:46

@CellarBellaatemycoal in my opinion steer clear of rigevidon. Never heard anything good about it and it’s always the first pill they stick so many young girls on.

the Yasmin pill has been proven to help with PMDD from what I’ve read, this is an option I’d like to explore.

I have it it I am fortunate that it only affects 2-3 days before my period. Four things have massively helped. A mirena coil, cutting right back on alcohol (only drink 1-2 glasses of wine a week), eating tons of veg and avoiding processed carbs and when I remember a b12 supplement. The mirena helped the most, (made it more typical pms rather than being a mess of anxiety and suicidal thoughts) but the other actions made further improvements as I did them. I now barely suffer and just have the occasional ropey month but it’s very manageable.

Escitalopram will rock your world. Very good AD with minimal side effects.
Btw I don't think Bigtruth said anything wrong, just saying his point of view.

I was struggling with the cycle. Was constantly at my GP asking for help.

I kept a diary of my mood and symptoms during the month.

I had zolodex injections which shut my cycle off. I had to take HRT due to being in my early 30s.

As it worked so well for 9 months I was granted a full hysterectomy as I was not having any more children. It's been a game changer for me.

I'm a better mum, friend and employee.

I don't know how I would have coped this year if I'd not got the help.

Yes,U start taking Ashwagandha and it helped me a lot.

Funnyname00 · 30/11/2022 16:16

Sertraline really helped me

rainbowhairchalk · 30/11/2022 16:18

I had to get the Mirena coil fitted and then because of non stop spotting I got the pill too 😬 now I am pretty balanced and much happier 😊

Has anybody tried Agnus Castus for PMDD? I'm suffering like OP and pinning my hopes on that as I don't get on well with hormonal contraceptives or anti depressants.

ThirtyThreeTrees · 30/11/2022 23:34

Yasmin & b6 supplements make a difference for me.

Starflower oil is also supposed to be good but it just gave me a headache.

Yes. I take it. I don't have PMDD but am in peri menopause.
It works very well for me.

MrsMorrisey · 01/12/2022 02:39

Also take vitamin b complex and Ashwaghanda

Flowerfairy101 · 01/12/2022 05:34

Thanks @MrsMorrisey how much do you take? Standard from boots, Holland and barrett seems to be 4mg.

Vonne85 · 02/04/2023 21:08

Hi i know this was written last year, just wondering what mini pill are you on? Really thinking of trying this again? 🤔

WeAllLikeVindaloo · 05/04/2023 06:16

@Vonne85
Ive been taking Yasmin after a diagnosis of PMDD for the last two months now and honestly, it’s worked like magic.
Yasmin has been the only type of hormonal pill proven to work on PMDD. I wanted to try this before anti-depressants and other options. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.
