Am I being unreasonable to think that 30K is a low salary for a 30 year old?

Just that really. I'm 30 years old. Working as a commercial support assistant in construction. Earning 30K a year.

Well that song’s utter bobbins, isn’t it?

DanceItOut · 20/05/2022 20:15

Too many variables. My last job I was an assistant manager on £18.5k a year. In one of the most expensive cities in the U.K.

I am now 33 and about to graduate with a degree and then try to find a part time job while I continue my masters. I’m hoping getting more qualifications will open up a better wage.

SarahJane83 · 20/05/2022 20:27

£30k for a support assistant is high! It’s nothing to do with your age, it’s to do with the role you do and in what industry. There are managers in other industries not even on £30k.

pollymere · 20/05/2022 20:33

Teacher with a Masters will take about four years to get that far. Likewise nurses. So no, I think there are people who would love to earn that much. I can't confirm it but I've seen jobs wanting PhDs paying less than 30K.

BluecheeseandBaskerville · 20/05/2022 20:36

That’s a pretty high wage for an author! And that’s a lot of years of post grad education to get there.

  1. well not unless you're one of the Govts cronies & superrich etc.

We pay tax on almost everything we do already . No, you should pay less if any tax !

And taxes are for public services !
In theory !!

- Yes, I should keep my answers to a more basic specific

You know what I mean by " greater good". Those who work to help alleviate suffering , rather than those majority who earn to create pure profit for business who do little good. The latter usually pay much better salaries.

But how do you think we can pay nurses, teachers etc more if you think that we should all be paying less tax?

Back in the 80's when I was a young 'un, salary level was said to be similar to your age. Add inflation to that you'd expect to be mid £40k? Are you happy is the key question!

Good Lord! So if you were 20 in the 80s you earned £20k?! Incredible.
In 1979 a retail worker got £29 per week.
In 2000 my salary as a Tutor Assessor for which I needed professional qualifications was £12k.
I don’t know where you worked in the 80s!

Fizzyfish · 20/05/2022 20:54

Ridiculous question, depends on too many factors

And further to that, the house I bought in 1986 was £20k, so that would have been 1 year’s salary wherever you worked?! Wowee! Where on earth did you work? Hollywood?!

purplebunny2012 · 20/05/2022 21:02

I earn a smidge over that and I'm in the next decade of age. I had to have a professional qualification in order to even apply for my role. I've worked in the position for over 14 years
So YABU to think it's low because of how old/young you are

Mxr · 20/05/2022 21:06

Utter bobbins ?
LOL Never heard that phrase ...is it a " nearly Geordie" phrase ?

I guess it's derogatory ?

Yeh it's a John Lennon song hahaha ! I assume you're famiar with him ..

Benjispruce4 · 20/05/2022 21:11

Wow OP. Hope you’ve got a hard hat. You’re in the right industry after all.

Dibbydoos · 20/05/2022 21:16

You're an administrator, so £30k sounds good to me. Your age has nothing to do with it.

My DS is much older than you, she's a PA, much more responsibility than you have and she's on £30k.

You are being complerely and utterly unreasonable.

Dontsayfuckorbugger · 20/05/2022 21:26

Well I'm 50 and work as a pharmacy dispenser. Get paid £10.30 ph which is more than many others in the same role as me. Many others I know in other pharmacies are on minimum wage. I'm based in the south west. House prices and rent are astronomical as are bills so I'd count myself lucky to be earning that much tbh

Mxr · 20/05/2022 21:27

I suppose Jeremy Corbyn would have a mote thorough answer to that than I can be bothered to go onto on here.
But if you believe all these costs are skyrocketting because we are ' doing our duty ' after a ' pandemic ' & ' war' & problems in the world, you're on the wrong track I think .

In other words, the costs : ' inflation ' are manufactured...like all their stories we are told.

Sorry, I mean the lyrics aren’t really true. We do give children time to be children, and the state does support and educate them. There really isn’t a conspiracy to keep the working man down; just look at the recent discussion about state vs private school pupils at Oxford.

Yes, there are systemic issues, and social background is still a bigger determinant of outcomes than is sex or race, but it’s not a top-down conspiracy led by “the system”; it’s a result of wealthy parents looking out for their own.

The state could do much more to ameliorate the effects of this, but they did try.

Mxr · 20/05/2022 21:37

I've sent a link to you, but they are assessing whether they can post it !
Don't hold your breath ...

Dnaltocs · 20/05/2022 22:44

Depends where you live. Price of housing, rent etc. it’s a reasonable income.

Utter bobbins nearly Geordie? Hardly! I'm from the South and we use it

Mandyjack · 21/05/2022 06:29

TuTuLemon · 19/05/2022 11:34

No that's seems ok to me, I'm on £22k at 25 and will probably be on £28-9k when I'm 30.

Your job pays you based on your age?

RamSyder · 21/05/2022 07:23

I’m 50 and I’ve never earned over £23k so to me it’s a lot.

LouLou198 · 21/05/2022 07:40

Considering the job you do I think that it is a very good salary. I am a nurse, 18 years qualified and 40 years old, I earn 30k, and I have no more increments.

heyhi · 21/05/2022 07:48

So in summary it seems that it would be safe to say that £30k is a reasonable salary regardless of age. Obviously we have the very high earners which a £30k salary would pale into significance but on the whole for a average person in a relatively average job, you're doing ok if you're bringing in around £30k per year.

I guess if you are in a couple both warning that, then you are in a £60k household which isn't to be sniffed at. You could run a mortgage cars and holidays on that which is probably the basis of a good lifestyle.
