Am I being unreasonable to think that 30K is a low salary for a 30 year old?

Just that really. I'm 30 years old. Working as a commercial support assistant in construction. Earning 30K a year.

OP posts:

Haha! Don’t go into nursing op, you will be very disappointed!

Baconandmaplesyrup · 19/05/2022 20:31

What is a commercial support assistant? Is it doing the admin work? Yes it’s below overall average but a lot of admin work is low paid in comparison to other roles. But then higher paid compared to others.

CornishPorsche · 19/05/2022 11:31

Your age is irrelevant. Is this the appropriate wage for the job you do?

If you want more money, go for promotion or a different role.

This.

Baconandmaplesyrup · 19/05/2022 20:34

Plenty of people working for the NHS are on less than £30k including junior doctors

but disingenuous that, it’s a few hundred below thirty for the most junior of junior Ie level one, then jumps up and over the second year.

SafeMove · 19/05/2022 20:52

I am a researcher in the NHS in Yorkshire and most Research Fellows (with an undergrad, PGDip and a MSc/PhD under their belt) are Band 6 (32k), Senior Research Fellows are Band 7 (40k). I started out as a Band 4 (24k) Research Assistant, worked my way up to Band 7.

So even highly skilled (I do a lot of statistics in my job and a lot of writing but I also interview people at a very vulnerable point in their life course so we also need people skills) and highly qualified people don't always earn the big bucks. 30k sounds a decent wage for your role and there are a lot of 30 year olds put there earning a lot less.

shivawn · 19/05/2022 20:55

I think its OK, not great but alright. I was on similar at 30 I think.

If you use my full quote, it makes perfect sense what my point was.

PailOfOdo · 19/05/2022 21:32

I don't know what a typical salary for your line of work is but £30k is about UK average (maybe slightly lower) so there's no reason that it'd be too low.

KezzabellaB · 19/05/2022 21:33

I'm 52 and earn 21777. Work for the NHS so no payrise due. Would love to be on 30k

PinkBuffalo · 19/05/2022 21:38

I am late 30s and have not seen 25k yet in my yearly salary

BorisJohnsonatemyhampster · 19/05/2022 21:43

‘Get a bloody grip! Try being 49 and living of 9.50 ph.’

Well to be fair to OP, it’s not her fault you earn minimum wage. You sound quite angry about your situation so what are you trying to do to change it?

JinglingHellsBells · 19/05/2022 21:58

@NohoHank You missed the word 'Perhaps' at the start of my point. Junior drs have a career path and they know how their salary will increase. The same for many professions that have a career structure.

This thread is a waste of time really. One post from the OP, no insight into what she does or her education.

I hope she's found some of it helpful 😕

I would be over the moon to receive 23k as a 40 year old!! (my dream job's offering - one can only prey!!!) I can only think it's in particular where the head office is being moved I'd benefit from a nearer London salary round these parts, (if I am successful.)

Seen nearly 10 quite varied and interesting jobs during the job hunt but guess what only juniors & first time jobbers need apply...at 15k-19k - no doubt because of the pension contributions break Employers can achieve with young-un's who aren't pension savvy yet : (

If that first sentence is in response to my post, I really doubt that you would have been over the moon to be working 14 hour days and crying on your way home most days, as I was.

And tbh it’s not really helpful to the OP is it? They obviously wouldn’t love to be earning 23K at 40 when they obviously worry they might be under earning at 30K at 30.

Userg1234 · 19/05/2022 22:28

Fuck me ! £30k low...are you on glue? I earnt less than £10k after tax, expenses etc last year I am 52! Admittedly I used to earn much more but picked happiness over corporate shite...but even so

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 19/05/2022 22:30

I am on 23k with bonuses that can take me up to 27. Not been to uni. 41

eastegg · 19/05/2022 22:33

Mangojuic · 19/05/2022 15:27

I'd be fucking made-up to earn 30k

Doing what though? I wouldn’t want to be a junior doctor earning it, would you?

Ric2013 · 19/05/2022 22:44

I'm putting that you are being unreasonable because the wording of your question implies that you should expect to be paid more because of your age.

It is well above the living wage (the actual living wage, not the national living wage that the government made up to make it seem that people were getting paid enough to live), so it is enough. Go into any shop or restaurant (the people who literally stop us from starving) and you will meet people earning far far less. So firstly you need to rejoice you are earning as much as you are.

Whether it is a wage commensurate with your experience and qualifications is another matter entirely. I don't know what the going rate is for a commercial support assistant so I won't comment specifically. You might find you are being paid comparatively little but another employer might expect more, and need to consider if it is really worth the extra stress? But sometimes a company may not realise how badly they are underpaying you and in which case you may need to find a job in another firm.

Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals · 19/05/2022 23:44

I’m 49 and am on less than 10 grand more than you, with just two increments of about 500 quid before I’m at the top of my scale. There are no more scales. I have a masters and 20 years experience in my current job, with plenty of variety in employment fields including acedemia - you’re doing ok

DieSchottin93 · 19/05/2022 23:52

I'm a similar age and stuck in a minimum wage job. I'd love to earn £30k a year 🙁

It’s more than the UK’s median wage, and most people are not earning their maximum by 30, so going on the information given in this opening post, yes, it’s a bit unreasonable to think it’s low.

Your qualifications and experience could alter that, of course. Have you any degrees, professional qualifications if in-demand skills that should bump up the amount?

SlightlyGeordieJohn · 20/05/2022 00:03

sst1234 · 19/05/2022 11:55

Why are people quoting only UK average as being a benchmark for what a good salary is. The UK has some of the lowest mean and median incomes when compared with US, EU and other developed nations. Even on a mean basis, UK is number 23. This country has become a low wage, low productivity economy to the detriment of of all.

Where are you getting that data? The Uk is about 17th out of around 200 countries, we really aren’t a low-income state.

TortolaParadise · 20/05/2022 00:16

It is a low salary compared to the cost of living - 'non - splashy' lifestyle.

TheoSawUs · 20/05/2022 00:36

I think it would be very difficult to survive on 30k if you have dependents. I work in the legal industry and almost all 30 year olds at city law firms will be earning six figures. I appreciate this is not typical though.

Wow...how out of touch are you with reality!!

I earn just a tad over 26k. I have my own house, am a single mum and I manage fine thanks. Oh and before you trot out the benefits line...I am not entitled to any whatsoever beyond child benefit nor do I get a huge amount of maintenance as we have 50/50 care.

Cervinia · 20/05/2022 07:49

And we’ll ever know what the OP does, m because she’s really she’s a well paid admin.
