To hate toothpaste

I am aware that bigger things are happening in the world, but for the love of Jesus why are ALL toothpastes so violently minty?

Not one of them is mild. It's like having your mouth assaulted - it burns, it lingers, it's horrible. Have resorted to kids' toothpaste, but I know it's not as good for adult teeth.

Am I a freak? Am I the only one who hates this stuff?

Or if you've found a mild one, PLEASE let me know about it!

I wonder if you're reacting to the foaming agent SLS? Still minty but I use the original Sensodyne Daily Care which is SLS (and alternatives) free. My mouth no longer burns!

It doesn't have fluoride in it though

yes it does - I checked, otherwise wouldn't have used it. I think some are fluoride free but most of them have it.

@downtonupton was reading this but it is years old. They must have changed their ingredients. Interesting read though.

I can’t stand it either. I’ve been using Corsodyl original for years but they have gone and “improved” the flavour and I’m struggling to find any of the discontinued original flavour.

Might be worth checking Wilko/savers/b&m as they often have discontinued stuff in

Same here, can't stand strong mint. I used to use mentadent SR which has been discontinued and was buying for £20+ off eBay.
I've found Colgate exilir (pink one) which is really mild and can get in Tesco.

I had been using that since I was a kid, back when it was Gibbs SR. Devastated when I couldn’t get it anymore.

I'm so glad I’m not the only person in the world who has issues with toothpaste.

Like @melodypondisasuperhero i can’t bear the smell or taste of mint. I have ARFID and the combination of taste and texture of toothpaste makes me feel quite sick.

After trying quite a few brands (admittedly there were some I didn’t try - just taking the lid off and smelling/seeing them made me gag) I can just about tolerate Pearl Drops Strong White, most of the time.

I’ve been googling the various names as they have been suggested by PPs but many of the kids’ versions are bubblegum (no) or berry flavoured (no).

I did try the unflavoured Oranurse but to me it had a flavour and I didn’t like it.

Because toothpaste makes me gag, a hygienist gave me a tip once - clean half of your mouse, take a break, then do the other half. I brush my lower teeth, then take my make up off and wash my face, then do the top teeth. It’s not 100% but it is some improvement.

Charcoal toothpaste, not minty at all and no aftertaste.

Bickles · 20/05/2022 06:26

Any toothpaste with 1450ppm fluoride is fine for anyone over the age of 3, adult or child. Berry flavoured, flavour free (oranurse), mild mint - it doesn’t matter. Just check the fluoride content on the tube.
The number of fillings we end up doing on mad people who don’t believe in science and use wacky fluoride free toothpastes is ridiculous!
