To go into work with this foot injury?

So I started a job with a well known food retailer last week and am due to work Friday to Sunday this week. However, I managed to completely puncture the sole of my foot by stepping on my earring a few days ago and it is agony to walk on. It’s slightly easier with some plasters thrown on but it’s definitely not enough for me to be running around putting out stock and doing home deliveries. I can do tills, but I’m not sure if my manager will be pleased seeing as I haven’t been fully trained on every role yet. AIBU to keep working? Not sure what to do.

Pain killers, blister plasters and soft insoles.
And go to work.

LIZS · 17/05/2022 21:37

Agree, cushion or gel plasters(maybe more than one layer). It may be less sore by Friday anyway.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 17/05/2022 21:39

I wouldnt take any time off for that, not unless it was infected and spreading over my whole foot. If it was just an earring it can't be a big puncture, around the same as stepping on a drawing pin. Just put a plaster and thick socks on and crack on.

A small puncture wound shouldn't be this painful days later - is the wound clean? How are you treating it?

It would be worth soaking it in boiled (and then cooled!) salt water a few times a day. Plenty of Savlon or similar, and keep it raised, dry and uncovered for as long as you can as well. Stay away from anything that makes your foot sweaty - keep changing your socks etc.

I’ve been keeping it clean but I have had to walk on it because I can’t avoid it with a toddler running around. It hurts to put pressure on it.

An earring??? Not a sword or rusty nail??! It should be advisory fine. Your boss may well be 🙄 if you take time off for this...

bloodyunicorns · 17/05/2022 21:46

*absolutely fine 🙄

Flippermeflopits · 17/05/2022 21:49

Sounds like a very minor injury. Padded plaster & some painkillers if needed. No need to miss work or change your duties

LubaLuca · 17/05/2022 21:50

It will be fine by Friday. Keep it clean and use a padded plaster at work if you have to.

It was quite a long stud and went quite deep into my foot..

If need be, you can ask your GP to give you a certificate that you need some temporary adjustments at work. I have one that says I need extra breaks due to long covid.

Flippermeflopits · 17/05/2022 22:01

Kinda sounds like you are trying to make it sound serious enough to justify going off sick?. Wouldn't recommend it early on in a new job, but I anything would come if it except some eye rolling from the duty manager.

Flippermeflopits · 17/05/2022 22:02

doubt

Overthebow · 17/05/2022 22:02

Not sire you can take time off for this, doesn't seem like a particularly bad injury. Just put a plaster on and get on with it.

Dunnoburt · 17/05/2022 22:02

Agree with PP, if its that bad then ask for reasonable adjustments, i wouldn't stay off though

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 17/05/2022 22:04

If you want to keep your job you're going to need to go in.
Up to you really.

Not really, I definitely don’t want to be off, but the level of pain combined with the fact it looks slightly infected since I just checked it 30 seconds ago is concerning

QuestionableMouse · 17/05/2022 22:13

I'd try to get it checked before work if you can. Punctures are bad for getting infected.

Maybe try some corn plasters or moleskin around it give some pressure relief.

CornishPorsche · 17/05/2022 22:13

"reasonable adjustments" are for disabilities, not minor injuries.

If it's infected, get it soaked before bed and go see a pharmacist in the morning - they'll be able to signpost you.

littlepopz · 17/05/2022 22:27

Turns out it was infected - I’ve just been draining a lot of very yellow pus out of it 😳

🙄🙄

Why the 🙄🙄??

LIZS · 17/05/2022 22:30

So go to Minor Injuries or Gp tomorrow.

CornishPorsche · 17/05/2022 22:46

Then scrap the pharmacist, you need to see a doctor - minor injuries or GP, whatever you can get into. And yes, you might not be walking on it much on Friday....

Still soak it!

thevanilla · 17/05/2022 23:05

Why would you be unreasonable to go to work? You clearly posted this hoping everyone would tell you to go off sick
