To go into work with this foot injury?

So I started a job with a well known food retailer last week and am due to work Friday to Sunday this week. However, I managed to completely puncture the sole of my foot by stepping on my earring a few days ago and it is agony to walk on. It’s slightly easier with some plasters thrown on but it’s definitely not enough for me to be running around putting out stock and doing home deliveries. I can do tills, but I’m not sure if my manager will be pleased seeing as I haven’t been fully trained on every role yet. AIBU to keep working? Not sure what to do.

You can't not go to work on Friday because you stood on an earring. Go to the gp tomorrow if you think it's infected. But come on, it's not an injury you take time off for is it.

Imknackeredzzz · 17/05/2022 23:13

For gods sake! Not that it’s a competition but I went into work last week with a throat and chest infection and fluid on my right lung. Yes I felt like death but I wasn’t contagious, I dosed up and got on with it.

you want time off from a new job cos you stepped on a earring

Treat it and go to work. If it is too painful then you can show your boss and go home. If you don't go to work and give the excuse that you stepped on an earring you'll be laughed at.

If you had just started working for me in that role and called in sick on day three because you stood on an ear ring, I would tell you not to bother coming back. Time waster.

Loginmystery · 17/05/2022 23:28

If you worked for me I’d fail your probation for that sort of work-shy attitude. I cannot tolerate it at all.

Compreed blister plasters.

Go to work and let them send you home. Going in shows commitment

Turns out it was infected - I’ve just been draining a lot of very yellow pus out of it 😳

Ah, of course it is.
Definitely take the day off.

Good luck finding a new job.

Oh dear those earring foot injuries are bad, aren’t they. Luckily it wasn’t an ingrown toenail or a paper cut. Whew, happy to see you’re on the other side of this OP.

Yes that was sarcasm, yes it was intentional. Buck up OP and go to work.

SD1978 · 18/05/2022 00:45

I'm afraid I would say yes- you should. This is suck a minor injury taking time off seems wrong. Get a corn plaster if you need to pad it, but it would t be something I'd take time off for.

milkyaqua · 18/05/2022 00:50

When was your last tetanus shot? You should see a GP.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 18/05/2022 01:18

Christ if I had to take time off each time I stood on a needle I'd never be at work. Shove it in some salt water it'll be fine!! Then stick a spongy plaster over it, wear some comfy shoes and go to work. You've just reminded me of someone who tried to get out of working the tills when I was in retail cos he had athletes foot. He was swiftly told by me to stop taking the piss and that unless his foot was gangrenous and about to drop off any second then he could quite easily manage to work a till whilst I put the delivery out. But if it was really that bad and he couldn't stand up then he could sit on a stool behind the counter and that was my final offer. What he was hoping for was for me to say go on then you do delivery (not a chance in hell whilst he was wearing flip flops) so he could spend most of it on the phone to his wife whilst smoking like a chimney outside.

Luckily it wasn’t an ingrown toenail or a paper cut.

Are you really comparing an in grown toenail to a paper cut? Because having had both I can tell you they really are not the same. I ignored the awful pain of mine and ended up having to have my toenail removed.

Bayleaf25 · 19/05/2022 09:58

Pain killers, blister plasters and soft insoles.
And go to work

agree! If it’s infected see a doctor if you think necessary but I would still go into work.

That's handy!

If you really did that, you are really not taking your own health and well being seriously enough @Imknackeredzzz

Vikinga · 19/05/2022 11:59

Ingrown toenails are really sore. OP what part of the foot is it on? Can you walk in a way that doesn't pressure the bit that's punctured? Releasing the puss should give some relief though. Soak it in salty water
