Postman kicking dog

Daily Fail article (I know, I know, but I can't sleep) about a postie kicking a dog. Doorbell video shows the incident - I can see why he did it.

Small terrier type dog running toward him, looks like a purely instinctive defensive kick - I think the owners here were irresponsible and should have had their dog under control.

Poor dog was defending the property, but poor Postman defending himself.

It's horrible the dog was kicked (I love dogs, I have my own and foster) but 33 posties are attacked by dogs every week apparently - they should be allowed to defend themselves.

Imagine having to deal with people's untrained unsecured dogs every single day.

Dog lunged at him, he kicked it.

Lokiju · 16/05/2022 06:51

I'm not sure I could 'proportion' my kick if I was frightened, to be honest.

I feel for the dog and the postie, responsibility is on the owners. But they're putting 100% blame on the postman which is unreasonable.

Dog should have been under control.

newnamethanks · 16/05/2022 06:56

Vile man. Hope he's sacked by midday today.

Whatthefuck3456 · 16/05/2022 06:56

I would have booted the dog a lot harder. The man’s doing his job and gets bitten by a dog, it should have a muzzle on it even if it’s in its garden, imagine a toddler climbed in would that be the toddlers fault too?

Are there 2 videos? On the one of the DM website you can't see the dog until it's been kicked towards the van. It's impossible to know what happened Where can you see it lunging at the postman?

whiskyjarsafilling · 16/05/2022 06:42

So he should have just stood there and being bitten?!
FGS! The people at fault are the owners. Their dog, their responsibility.
it’s not the fault of the guy who kicked away an angry dog with sharp teeth that was running for him!

There’s a difference between booting a tiny dog and moving it away with your foot or leg. The difference is clear on the video - this guy is a cruel arsehole.

That’s pathetic. And yes dogs shouldn’t be muzzled in their own gardens on the off chance unaccompanied toddlers break in.

Nobody should be that afraid of a tiny dog as to kick it out of control like that. What really happened is this guy is a class a prick who thinks nothing of hurting small animals who pose no threat to him.

Ifailed · 16/05/2022 07:00

I can only assume from many posts on here that if the postie had been a "grown momen" it would have OK for her to kick the dog.

Whatthefuck3456 · 16/05/2022 07:00

Put all dogs down and the world would be a better place!!

AndAsIfByMagic · 16/05/2022 07:01

I can't believe people thinking he shouldn't have kicked it. Little dogs can bite and bites hurt and can get infected.

People have a right to defend themselves from attacks by dogs of whatever size.

If you don't want your dog kicked keep it under control. And don't whine if it does get kicked it's your own fault.

Ithinkimightbebroken · 16/05/2022 07:01

@girlmom21 it can and I can understand why people just let the behaviour slip but I really think all dogs should be taught to leave when told and also to go to a certain place if required and also not to bark and charge at people. I don’t care if it’s a chihuahua or a Dane they should all have the same level of basic obedience.

My dogs all know the word kitchen and if I say it race there. It would take 30 seconds to shut the kitchen door before I went to open it, however if I did open it with them there they 1000% would not behave like that little dog nor would I allow it. Maybe people should put a bit more effort in and there wouldn’t be so many badly behaved dogs running about?

Just because it’s angry and small does not make the behaviour cute or any more acceptable than a huge dog doing it. Having been bit by many a small dog (it’s my job) it still bloody hurts.

Barely 7am and we have a contender for more ridiculous post of the day. No one should let their dog out in their garden in case a random toddler appears
😊

Or a postman. Case proven. Now whose post looks ridiculous?

Clue: it’s yours

Are you not aware of phobias? Not saying this man has one but to say that no one should be afraid of tiny animals is stupid

Should no one be afraid of spiders or mice or buttons? Don't you understand how a phobia works?

Boomboom22 · 16/05/2022 07:05

Tamzo85 · 16/05/2022 06:27

Why should a dog of any size cause fear? That’s absurd. I would be afraid of a large dog, but if a miniatures daushund came running up barking Is just think it was cute that it was acting all tough guard dog.

Where was he afraid of being bitten? His toe? If it was instinctive then his instinct is to be a cruel coward.

Being a grown man should shield him from the fear of being mauled by a tiny dog yes. Being a grown woman should also shield you from such fears as it does me.

Wow really? Why would anyone be scared of heights? Or spiders?
You do know children are killed and people bitten every day by dogs? At least it is rational.
Seems a pretty clear cut case of the dog being out of control here.

DingleyDel · 16/05/2022 07:07

I think it looks like an instinctive reaction from someone who has been attacked by dogs too many times. Small ones are the worst, they nip the ankles or could jump and get nasty bite on a very tender area! A child was bitten badly by a very small dog in our park just yesterday. What else would most people do if a small dog was coming for them? Run from it? Really not a lot of choice but to kick.

SafariPark · 16/05/2022 07:10

I'm far more comfortable with medium and large dogs than small dogs. I can read them alot better and often can't interpret the feelings/intentions of a small dog in the way I can with a larger dog. I am wary around anything smaller than a Springer and you can be sure that if one had run at me barking in my community nursing days and gotten close enough to make contact with my foot it would've received a kick. If you expect to benefit from these public services you need to keep your dog under control private property or not.

Zippidy123 · 16/05/2022 07:11

Tamzo85 my DH is a postman. He's been bitten on 3 separate occasions, one was a sustained attack from a terrier who he did have to kick multiple times to get it to stop-you should have seen the bites, owner had no control whatsoever and got bitten herself when she tried to pick it up. He had to have time off work to attend minor injuries to get the bites cleaned and dressed, antibiotics, tetanus jab etc. He loves dogs and spends time getting to know the dogs on his round but he'd have reacted the same way as the postie in that video. You have no idea if that man has had a similar previous experience. Terriers might be small but their teeth can do some serious damage.

Dauncets · 16/05/2022 07:11

If you read the report it says the dog bit him. What he did was completely understandable.

SobranieCocktail · 16/05/2022 07:14

My DH, brother and myself have all been bitten by dogs. They were all small (terriers and chihuahua), and the bites were nasty. I can imagine kicking out instinctively if a small dog came running at me.

rwalker · 16/05/2022 07:14

100% with postman the size of the dog is irrelevant small dog can cause damage as well a jack Russell ripped an 2cm cut in my sons face.
I work for one of the utilies and lost count of the amount of time have to deal with uncontrolled dogs I would kick any dog coming at me out of the way.
The pictures we get from our union are shocking workers have received life changing injuries off dog bites.
The owner is complelty at fault

@Tamzo85 ANY bite can get infect irrespective of size of bite or dog. Strange that the welfare of an uncontrolled dog comes before the welfare of a person doing nothing but his job . Why should he risk getting bitten . Small kick would of just pushed it out of the way and it would come straight back for him .It needed to be a good kick to get it out of the way . Whilst terrible for the dog there's is nothing else he can do ether kick the dog or get bitten .Why should he choose to get bitten

If entitled arsehole dog owners took responsibility for there dogs it wouldn't be a problem .
I think it was bang out of order that the postoffice apologised
