Just listening to my 6 year old beg (once again) to watch Jurassic park (the first original movie)

Is he still too young? Aibu / stupid to say yes?

Huh? Sorry OP, why wouldn’t you? It’s not exactly the exorcist. It’s a fun family film. Much better than the recent drivel sequels anyway.

Well a few people on here share our fears. He absolutely LOVES dinosaurs and we don't want him to have nightmares! There are some very scary bits. I still remember the kitchen moment and how scared I was (when I was 10).

But kids are more resilient these days and a few of his friends have seen it- so I think he feels like he's missing out.

Only you know your child.

Will be fine for some at that age and too scary from some 12 year olds.

Ladyofthepeonies · 15/05/2022 15:51

our then 6 year old loved them we even bumped into his year 1 teacher going to the cinema watching the most recent one. But he loves Dinos.

Ladyofthepeonies · 15/05/2022 15:53

Oh but hated Pete’s Dragon and banned me from ever showing him it again ‘it’s not a movie for little kids it’s too upsetting’

MistyFuckingQuigley · 15/05/2022 15:53

Notbluepeter · 15/05/2022 14:40

I personally wouldn't.. I watched it around 9yrs old. And even now as a 33 yr old adult the only nightmares I ever have are about velociraptors 😨

Me too! They are so creepy. Still love all the films though. Whenever I watch one I just have to accept the fact that I'll have nightmares later 🤷‍♀️ I can watch any sort of horror about a serial killer and be absolutely fine but dinosaurs just shit me right up

Wavygravy1 · 15/05/2022 15:58

My 5 year old started watching them ages ago 👀 he loves dinosaurs and has watched them all so many times!

AntoinetteCosway · 15/05/2022 16:07

I was petrified when I saw it aged 12 😂

SilverOnToast · 15/05/2022 16:08

We just watched it with our 9 year old and all loved it. Such a great classic film, which was groundbreaking for its time. I love the slow build of the different characters and the pace that gets much faster and more scary mid way through.

I think it’s fine for everyone to see tbh, but I did sort of save it for our kid to watch till now, as I think there are lot of layers that are missed (who everyone is, the roles they play, the idea of DNA etc) if you don’t have a certain maturity, and the actual dinosaurs don’t make a big appearance till relatively late. I worried that if we watched too soon we’d have to ff the “boring grownup bits” to get to the dinos. I do have a kid with a short attention span though!😂9 was perfect for us, but you know your kid best…

dicdicnurse · 15/05/2022 16:11

My DD was a huge dinosaur fan from an early age and we let her watch Jurassic Park at 5 I think. She absolutely loved it.
My other DD would have hated it and still hasn't seen it at 12.
It's about the individual child I guess.

DollyTots · 15/05/2022 16:18

My 5 year old DD loved it. I was hesitant at first but she’s always loved the macabre. She loves Coraline too. I think it’s a great way for them to learn and play about with fear as an emotion. I love horror films too for this reason.

That being said there are still limits. My DD really wants to watch Volcano of all films but I can see that adverse weather actually frightens her, so that’ll be kept until she’s older.

bassackwards · 15/05/2022 16:25

Mine is 4 and loves them too. She's always going on about doctor malcolm 😂

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/05/2022 16:27

Mine watched it around that age, he loves it. He's 8 and has recently seen Jaws which he also loves.

Soubriquet · 15/05/2022 16:27

My two love it.

Ds first watched it when he was 4 and has been hooked ever since.

It depends on the child. If your child is easily scared, then no.

Mine have watched avengers and a lot of rated 12 films. I have seen them first and assessed that they are fine for the dc to watch

FabulousKilljoys · 15/05/2022 16:30

DS1 watched it when he was 3, he was dinosaur obsessed and he was absolutely engrossed.

You can't prevent him having nightmares, he's probably already had them. They won't harm him or scar him for life, it's a natural thing everyone gets.

I was fine with Jurassic Park movies as a kid and my other favourite was Men In Black. Of course I wanted to watch Volcano because of TLJ. My mum didn't watch it first... the scene where the guy jumps off of the train into the lava (throwing someone to safety) has stayed with me ever since and I've never finished the movie !

TheAverageUser · 15/05/2022 17:03

I wouldn't personally, why push it when they might be frightened. There's loads of dinosaur movies / TV for that age range anyway.

If it’s the remake then I absolutely agree!

I watched it last year and fucking SOBBED.

WhackingPhoenix · 15/05/2022 17:07

But absolutely let him watch JP! It’s been my favourite film since I was around his age 🙂

ObjectionHearsay · 15/05/2022 17:11

DS father in his infanant wisdom letn DS watch it when he was 3!!!! Because he loved and still loved dinosaurs.

I came home from a 12 hour shift and asked "what did you guys do today?" And he said "we watched Jurassic Park" I said "you what?!?!...the dinosaur eat people!!!" And he said "yeah, DS thought it was hilarious" 🤦🏻‍♀️

It did not damage or traumatise DS, he still lives the film to this day, but I'd say if you think your child may not take well to gore/dinosaurs eating people, I'd wait.

DS is the exception not the norm. I then had to give a "approved l" list of films to his father 🤣

Greensleeves · 15/05/2022 17:14

VeryTrying22 · 15/05/2022 13:38

I’d let him watch it

i take a very similar parenting style to situations like this as my parents did, nothing out of bounds but there are consequences to decisions etc.they’ll soon regret pushing too much when get get nightmares!

Really? Even if a 5yo demanded to watch It, or The Human Centipede? That's some hardcore permissive parenting right there Grin

Verite1 · 15/05/2022 17:14

First one is fine. The sequels are scarier. I remember we had to stop either 2 or 3 when watching with DS (then about 6).

Ladyofthepeonies · 15/05/2022 17:55

@WhackingPhoenix yup lesson learnt watch film through first.

sunnyfields25 · 16/05/2022 09:18

Really interesting to read these replies as DS (almost 5) is obsessed with dinosaurs and is desperate to watch all the Jurassic Park/World films. But I've been telling him he has to wait until he's 10ish before he can see them. I'm wondering now if I'm being a bit too strict...
