Do I live in the most expensive area for housing?

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/05/2022 22:42

I suspect I do. A 2 bed flat with parking will be around £600k and a 3 bed family home is about £850k

I think we are on a par with central London, but thought I would ask the hive mind.

This is not a good thing btw, just interested

Sounds comparable to London and Oxford to me! Luckily I bought here 25 years ago, but it's extortionate!

Theluggage15 · 14/05/2022 09:57

Yes as a PP pointed out, Jersey has the same problems as expensive areas of the U.K., young people can barely afford to rent and certainly can’t buy and there are difficulties for teachers, nurses, social workers being able to afford anywhere decent.

I’m not sure why you’re being unpleasant, I love living in Jersey but I hugely miss just being able to get in the car or train and go somewhere different as you can do in the U.K. And to be honest you sound dim if you don’t realise central London is massively more expensive than Jersey as are other areas of the U.K. Maybe you need to get off the rock more.

zingally · 14/05/2022 10:20

Love a humble brag on a Saturday morning.

Drip feed the "oh I live in Jersey! Silly me, forgot to mention!"
And the "nothing would tempt me back!"

Okay? Stay there then. What even is this post?

FunnysInLaJardin · 14/05/2022 13:27

So I have established that I don't live in the most expensive area, and many other areas of the UK are comparable.

I have also established that the small mindedness I left behind all those years ago is still alive and well.

I was asked where I lived and I answered. No one on this thread has any idea whether I am renting a flat on minimum wage, or living in a 10 bed mansion rolling in cash.

Just by stating the fact I live in Jersey led to a raft of accusations of bragging and all manner of unpleasantness.

Ah well, it is what it is

"small minded" vs so insular you've never heard of Rightmove..... if all you wanted from this thread was to see if Jersey was the most expensive place to buy property in the British Isles you could have saved us all some time by simply doing a google search you know.

Louise0701 · 13/05/2022 23:32

Bitter about what?

In answer to your other question; 20% is the lowest tax rate here.
some people pay 40% and some pay 45%

And we've got NI on top of that

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/05/2022 14:32

3 bed houses where I live are around £200k. Personally nothing on earth would make me want to live somewhere where housing is so grossly expensive, living where I do means I still have disposable income despite the rise in energy costs!

whatever gives you the idea I hadn't heard of Rightmove? I get that the internet is out there to answer all my questions, but you do also know that MN is a place where many people ask questions too?

Vair lazy tbh, that olde shite that why not ask the internet. Must do better @londonmummy1966

Bristol? I live here and it's crazy

Theluggage15 · 14/05/2022 22:05

You are demonstrating small mindedness in everything you say! Jersey is far worse for that than the U.K. Just get off the bloody rock more and stop being so ridiculous.

RodiganReed · 14/05/2022 22:09

The brass neck of someone from Jersey calling other people small minded 😂 I love Jersey, its a beautiful place but its not exactly renowned for its enlightened thinking or liberal values.

Theluggage15 · 14/05/2022 22:10

Yes exactly Rodigan! I love living here but bloody hell some people in Jersey could give lectures in small mindedness!

Winter2020 · 14/05/2022 22:28

I remember hearing that Cornwall was the county with the biggest disparity between wages and house prices, so the most unaffordable for locals to buy a house. I think houses were about 10x the local wage. (Interested if anyone knows if this is still the case).

I think a lot of the places mentioned here where houses are expensive to buy would have a lot of high paying jobs too.

londonmummy1966 · 14/05/2022 22:31

@FunnysInLaJardin Vair lazy tbh," pretty well sums you up then

Crispynoodle · 14/05/2022 23:14

My 5 bed 3 bathrooms 3 receptions 1 study detached house with floored attic and huge 1/2 acre garden is worth £250K in Northern Ireland I have no idea how you all fund those huge mortgages!

This is a really good point. "Expensive" is always a relative term and actually we should look at this disparity between housing costs and income. Cornwall famously suffers from the problem of wealthy second homes driving up prices. I believe in Jersey there is some legislation in place to avoid this.

Are you usually so unpleasant? You’ve
clearly created this, pointless, thread to be provocative. We’ll done, you can get on with your day now, satisfied you’ve done what you came to do Confused

By the way, I live in a village in the Surrey Hills, near Guildford. House prices compare to yours. Not sure that is remotely interesting 🤷🏻‍♀️

MassiveSalad22 · 15/05/2022 06:32

Bog standard pebbledash 4 bed down the road on for a million. Utterly ridiculous. I would say that’s incredibly expensive as terrible value for money. A £15mil mansion at least would be unique/luxurious/a status symbol.

MassiveSalad22 · 15/05/2022 06:42

@DangerouslyBored bet you’re my neighbour 😄

Elsie2022 · 15/05/2022 06:49

@Winter2020 it's London that's 10 X average wage..Cornwall is 14 X....Brighton, Oxford and Winchester are less affordable than London too but I suppose would have it's share of London commuters as well..

Cities in china is over 40.X average wage so I suppose we can count ourselves lucky! A

LakieLady · 15/05/2022 06:56

This small Sussex town appears to be more expensive than where the OP lives

£700k

And it's not even in the posh part of town.

gracedentssketty · 15/05/2022 07:04

@Twilightstarbright what made you move away? Was it the mental house prices increase?
