Do I live in the most expensive area for housing?

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/05/2022 22:42

I suspect I do. A 2 bed flat with parking will be around £600k and a 3 bed family home is about £850k

I think we are on a par with central London, but thought I would ask the hive mind.

This is not a good thing btw, just interested

i wish my tax is 20%. In here its depend on the income. Sadly i pay 40% tax 😞

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/05/2022 23:03

Sadly not a tax haven. I pay 20% tax on my income as do all residents

20% is basic income tax rate in the UK.

20% is max income tax rate in Jersey. And no CGT or inheritance tax. And most corporation tax is at 0%.

Absolutely a tax haven compared to the UK.

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/05/2022 23:07

so now I feel better! Higher prices elsewhere, its good to see we are not quite as ridiculous as I thought!

Hooray! Glad our overcrowded expensive country could be of assistance in affirming your island paradise xx

Suppose so then. Its good that ordinary residents get to benefit and not just tax avoiding corporations!

The bitterness is as hilarious now as it was when I left 25 years ago.

Not a clue.

Is this what's known in these quarters as a stealth brag ?
☺️

Hurstlandshome · 13/05/2022 23:29

London is one of the most expensive cities in the world to buy property. Central London? Forget it. Not sure why you'd think Jersey is comparable.

Bodgejobvendors · 13/05/2022 23:30

You are significantly cheaper than central London!

25 years away has dulled your mind. There are plenty of places with that pricing in outer London and the south east.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 13/05/2022 23:30

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/05/2022 23:17

Suppose so then. Its good that ordinary residents get to benefit and not just tax avoiding corporations!

And that’s why property is more expensive.

Still, look on the bright side. You could be shafted on income tax and corporation tax and CGT and NI just to “enjoy” living in the UK.

Louise0701 · 13/05/2022 23:32

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/05/2022 23:13

you sound a tad bitter Grin

Bitter about what?

In answer to your other question; 20% is the lowest tax rate here.
some people pay 40% and some pay 45%

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/05/2022 23:03

Sadly not a tax haven. I pay 20% tax on my income as do all residents

But people who live in other expensive areas who can afford £650k+ properties are unlikely to be paying 20% tax.

They'll be paying 40/45% tax on a lot of their income. What about VAT and National insurance in Jersey? In the UK, people pay those as well as income tax.

soundofsilver · 14/05/2022 05:46

Some areas of Bristol have the same prices

Louise0701 · 14/05/2022 06:08

@motherofchihuahuas no the OP is @FunnysInLaJardin

StageRage · 14/05/2022 06:27

I think you are underestimating London prices OP.

Here is a ‘typical family house’, a 3 bed semi, small garden, no parking, convenient for the tube in S London (not central London) for £1,050,000.

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/122814434#/?channel=RES_BUY

StageRage · 14/05/2022 06:35

(and it is scruffy and not at all ‘done up’)

Wintersgirl · 14/05/2022 06:42

Nope, central London, Sandbanks in Dorset, Oxshott and Virginia Water are way more expensive OP...

Twilightstarbright · 14/05/2022 06:56

I used to live in Guernsey until last year, I would have loved a family house for £550k! It was and is very expensive for property, partly because you can’t just move further away and have a longer commute.

With regard to tax, Jersey and Guernsey don’t have the NHS, and healthcare isn’t free at point if use for most people. I had to pay £2.70 to dispose of a bag of rubbish. It’s a different tax system and not directly comparable to the UK.

anywhichwaytoo · 14/05/2022 07:02

LOOOOL OP NOOOO! 😂

2 bed flat, £1.2m, does not include parking space which you have to pay extra for.

A house? £2m+

Central London.

Just look on Rightmove for your answer...

ChrisReasBathEggs · 14/05/2022 07:07

Live on South coast. Pay 1k for a 2 bed flat (fab location, needs a bit of work after 7 years in here though).

A 3 bed is between 1.25k and 1.6k. to buy is 300k+ (ex council).

It fucking ridiculous as the average wage here is about 30k and that is being generous. People keep buying holiday homes and it has become a student town in the last 15 years, pushing prices up.

I have no idea how people survive round here.

Balls thought you were talking about renting! I guess compared to Jersey and London we aren't that bad.

To be honest it's shit in most places where people want to live and work. I don't think arguing on threads is going to make it better. Young people certainly need to vote to fix the problem properly at the next GE as I don't think our current government care.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/05/2022 07:22

I know Jersey has housing problems for normal people... the nurses, shop workers, drivers, hospitality etc. Its not all millionaires..
Larger families (3/4) kids stuck in 2 bed HA-equivalent properties for example and paying a fortune for the privilege.
