To think £56 for a food shop for a week is expensive?

It's just me and my 8 year old daughter. I've been trying to save money and usually shop daily so decided tonight to do an online shop at Asda for Monday. The total came to just under £57 for the week, that's for 10 breakfasts, 5 lunches (for me as daughter at school) and 10 dinners and some snacks. This included two bottles of wine (£10) and two cat foods (£8) so I suppose these could be ignored.

However, I still think it's an excessive amount for the amount just the two of us. Is that a lot or pretty average?

@uhohhereweego

flippin heck op, how cheap do you think it should be?!

lovelymama · 15/05/2022 18:08

2 adults, 2 kids and we spend £1400 a month on food. Organic veg, organic meat, organic fruit, nice wine, ethical cleaning products….we are aware we need to massively reduce our food bill but no idea how to considering I like to have the best quality food . No way am I buying a chicken for £3.50

“No idea how to” 🤣

There’s a cost of living crisis and prices are noticeably higher. Also, have you factored in what you have saved by not driving to the shops daily?
If you shop solely from one retailer and don’t shop around you will always miss out on discounts in other stores, it’s what you sacrifice for convenience.

Svara · 15/05/2022 18:30

Keep the quality but change what you buy? Cheaper cuts of organic meat, less meat, no fresh blueberries or similar, cut out expensive convenience foods, simpler food, make your own cleaning products?

Seems about right to me tbh

Eeksteek · 15/05/2022 18:32

I’ve spent more, and I’ve spent less. On a Waitrose delivery, for me and my tween I spent around £55 (no pets and I bought coffee pods and other bits from elsewhere, too!) Now, life is a bit different, I’m doing Aldi and B and M, and trying to keep it under £20. Obviously, I eat differently for £20, although my kid still has the same food. (It isn’t her fault I’ve got less money and I’m trying to shield her from it where I can). Aldi is quite an eye opener. Even if things improve, I’ll probably keep doing some shops there.

lovelymama · 15/05/2022 18:33

😬 I don’t understand this. But then maybe it’s a mumsnet thing I don’t know about

wildchild554 · 15/05/2022 18:38

Seems like a lot to me but then we are on a really tight budget so spend £10 a week on food for myself and 2 children so I don't know how much I'd spend normally if I had more to spend. Also am lucky enough to have access to an anti-food waste market which is a fraction of the cost of a supermarket.

ChanceNorman · 15/05/2022 18:42

Taking out the wine and pets it's £39 for 5 days food - £7.80 a day to feed an adult and a child.

I don't think that's expensive, no. In ratio, that would equate to spending £135 a week to feed a family of 5 for 7 days. Some do it cheaper, sure, but it's not expensive imo.

Bellie710 · 15/05/2022 18:43

No idea how you can get all that for £56 that is amazing! I have just come back from Tesco and spent over £200 for 2 adults 3 children with no alcohol and that doesn't include what I will spend through the week popping into the shop for bits.

What don’t you understand?

Morenamesandpasswords · 15/05/2022 18:46

We’re £150 a week for two of us!

cultkid · 15/05/2022 18:51

God we spend at least £300 for two children a baby and two adults

I'm blown away you think 39£ is a lot
I think it's cheap

Mfsf · 15/05/2022 19:13

I say that is good , we spend £150 to £200 a week on 4 people and without school lunches

Threebutterflies · 15/05/2022 19:15

Wow that’s really good ! For myself and 2 kids it’s about £70 plus one or 2 takeaways

I replied in the post before that one but my quote of your post didn't work, so it wasn't clear who I was replying to.

Middersweekly · 15/05/2022 19:33

I think that’s pretty good OP. What used to cost me €150 a week is now costing €200 a week for 4 people plus dogs. This weeks shop was actually €250!!!

FantaLover · 15/05/2022 19:42

I think thats good !
I shopped today & we do 90% of our shopping in Aldi but once every couple of months I go to Tesco to get branded stuff. I did that today & stocked up on mutti tinned tomatoes, voiella pasta, obento sushi rice & noodles - multiples of each plus other more niche stuff like that I spent £100 there. Of course I can get the equivalents in Aldi but we like these ones so I don't mind stocking up.

Then I went to Aldi & spent £60 on fresh goods & cleaning stuff.

We're all stocked up for the week ahead now & much longer in certain things.

We're 2 adults, a teen & a cat

I honestly don't know how I would feed 3 people for a week on £10 though & I totally take my hat off to those who can & do.

Mirw · 15/05/2022 19:42

I spend on average £100 for 2 a week but that is mainly fruit and veg even though we are not vegetarian. We eat a little meat. And that is shopping in Lidl!

FantaLover · 15/05/2022 19:45

Actually £20 of the Tesco shopping was on a sleeping bag dc needs for school trip

€10 in Aldi on a plant for the garden & £6 on fresh flowers so £36 can come off the food total across the 2 lots of shopping

So £80 in Tesco & £45 in Aldi

LaDamaDeElche · 15/05/2022 20:03

I think that’s pretty cheap in all honesty.
