School bbq

Help wise mums netters. My daughter stated school in September, small school. We’ve had a couple of people back for tea and play, I chat to a couple of the parents but not in depth, iyswim. So, would I be unreasonable in asking maybe 4/5 families to come for a bbq?. Not sure how you actually make friends on the school run so it seemed a nice idea.

Go for it

SomewhereEast · 12/05/2022 17:08

Sounds nice! I'd come

Poppyseed14 · 12/05/2022 17:15

Lovely idea! 😍

Thanks, enthusiasm appreciated!.

4 or 5 families? Blimey you’re brave! Lovely idea though. Go for it.

PoseyFlump · 12/05/2022 17:30

Have you got a plan for if any you invite are veggies?

carefullycourageous · 12/05/2022 17:30

Is absolutely fine, have a nice time.

One thing I would say as an aged parent is the making friends is a marathon not a sprint so take it easy, be nice but don't expect it to all happen in the first year.

I would imagine OP would ask if there were any vegetarians and then buy some vegetarian food if necessary

Igmum · 12/05/2022 17:32

Lovely idea can I come? Smile (oh how I miss the smiley face with big teeth)

Childbeinganiggtmare · 12/05/2022 17:37

Im used to “big” gatherings, the more the merrier, we’re fully stocked with 30 spare chairs and loads of alcohol. With regards to veggies, a family member has a severe intolerance to a particular food and also happens to be veggie (I even have a separate bbq to prevent cross contamination) veggies will be catered for lovingly also. Igmum, if your near, your welcome! X

I think it's a lovely idea.

My ds went to wrap around care and so I missed all the coffee after drop off, stop at park on way home etc socialisation.

I'd have lived to have been invited to something more formal where you felt like someone wanted to get to know you.

The school gates can be lonely for more people than you think

declutteringmymind · 12/05/2022 17:50

How lovely of you. Go for it and enjoy.

Pbbananabagel · 12/05/2022 17:55

What a great idea! I need to try and remember this for when our DC’s start school

Why the need to shoehorn this into a simple thread asking about a BBQ. I am sure the OP is not an idiot, hell she may even be veggie herself. Plenty of people are and still have BBQ's.
It gets really tiresome on every thread about food there is someone reminding us all about the veggies.

Speaking honestly, I would advise not being too full on with the alcohol with parents you don't know, I am not saying have none but some parents might be a bit Hmm if it is a proper piss up with the kids there.

Softly softly catchy monkey with school run friends, IMO.

Awoooga · 12/05/2022 18:16

This sounds really lovely actually and has inspired me to make sure I do something similar when mine is a little older!

Childbeinganiggtmare · 12/05/2022 18:19

Sorry. When I say I’ve got plenty of alcohol I certainly don’t mean it to be a drinking fest!.

OK that's good or you will be the subject of a thread about a pissed up barbeque the next day!

PoseyFlump · 13/05/2022 17:22

How rude @rainbowunicorn I was mentioning it so the OP wouldn't get caught out and feel awkward in front of new friends. Fortunately the OP took it as it was meant.

edwinbear · 13/05/2022 17:27

Sounds lovely OP, I'm sure both grown ups and kids will have a fabulous time!

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 13/05/2022 17:29

We had someone in my DDs year like you, who was keen to get people together, and started BBQs etc and thank god for them because 6 years later our families are really good friends, go to each others houses lots and get pissed

Go for it! The worst that can happen is you don't actually get on that well but you won't know if you don't try!

There will be some that will be delighted, some will be "bit strange, but I'll go", some will not want to get involved at all.

Remember most people aren't looking to make friends of their dcs' parents.

Out of interest, how will you choose which families to invite ?
