I'll admit this is sheer nosiness on my part. I'm not really on speakers with the family so can't ask directly (although I may be able to find out via another neighbour at some point) It's such an odd situation I can't work out what's going on but I bet someone on here will be able to offer a plausible explanation.

We live in a typical suburban street, all homeowners. Family in question have (primary) school age kids, have lived here for about 10 years. I noticed about a fortnight ago that their car wasn't there overnight. No big deal, I assumed they were away on a break. But the next day the car was back, for an hour or two, and then gone again until the following day. I thought maybe one of the parents was working nights, but the house is definitely unoccupied, none of them are there at other times just this hour or so daily. At those times they're all here too and all seem to be in good health so that's not the reason.

I thought maybe some sort of damage to the house had happened that might mean they needed to move out (this happened to a relative who had subsidence for example) but it didn't make sense they'd come back daily, I know my relative had to move out completely and everything was put in storage.

They could be doing works to the house, but there's been no one else here (and as we're terraced we'd definitely hear any works).

I thought they might have moved out to rent it, but all their stuff still seems to be there (kids toys still in garden etc). I can't think of anything else - and I guess I'm interested because if they have moved I'm wondering if they're selling, if we'll get new neighbours etc.

Selling and already bought another house, just popping back to check on this one until it is rented / sold?

Staying with a relative who needs help

Have you looked on Rightmove? One of our neighbours didn't have a sign up as they didn't want their NDN to know.

AmberGer · 12/05/2022 16:46

Maybe they have a relative that is very ill. My household was much the same a few months ago.

forlornlorna1 · 12/05/2022 16:52

Rats

curiositykills · 12/05/2022 16:53

I've looked on Rightmove but there's nothing on there either sale or rent.

I did consider they might be caring for an unwell family member but it didn't seem to fit with the daily returns, plus I'm pretty sure the grandparents also live in our town, so only a few minutes away.

Are the curtains open or closed day and night?

Rats

Good god I hope not!
And surely if they had rats they wouldn't come back daily would they? I'd probably burn my house and contents down though, I'm terrified of rats Blush

Curtains are open.
They normally have at least 1 window open at this time of year - we do the same - but all windows firmly shut.

I'm worrying about the rats now. Maybe they HAD rats, and they've caused damage?

Do you have a hobby OP?

In my previous house, I had an infestation of mine, my husband was away working so I moved out. Came back every day to set traps etc.

Xiaoxiong · 12/05/2022 17:03

Could also be moths, woodworm or even bedbugs. I know a family who had to move out of their flat for two weeks to have it fumigated for bedbugs.

Renting out another house so they can get their child into a better school
Problem with the boiler, sewage, electricity etc.

Crocsandshocks · 12/05/2022 17:05

They have a second home? I have a second house not many people know about. Only because they don't bother to ask.

Discovereads · 12/05/2022 17:05

Scout/Guide camping trip somewhere close by where they took a break and stopped home to shower?

So went out, spent the night camping (car gone all night), next day came back for an hour or two to get showers/freshen up, then back to campsite for day, spent second night there and then returned home the following day.

most campground do have showers, but some people have issues with public showers and would drive home for an hour visit or so rather than shower at a campsite.

Evilista · 12/05/2022 17:06

There's a bear living in their bedroom and they come home to feed it

TheOrigRights · 12/05/2022 17:08

It's not your question, but I am wondering how you know all the residents on your street are home owners. Is it a really small street or are you such a close knit community you know whether a particular home is owned or rented.

I have lived in my house for 25 years. My nearest 10 or so houses are set back from the road and we share a car parking area. I do happen to know which of these are rented or owned as I've lived here the longest and we also all talk to each other. Outside of this little block I have little idea which dwellings are rented or not on the rest of the road (about 60 houses in all).

coffeecupsandfairylights · 12/05/2022 17:09

Maybe they're renting somewhere that doesn't allow pets and have come back to feed the bird/cat/guinea pigs?

Horst · 12/05/2022 17:12

Moving on the sly. We did. Just the odd box left the house slowly till the last day when we took everything that was big but was already living in the new house. We left the cctv up, smart bulbs everything until key day.

Evilista · 12/05/2022 17:13

They have a sick baby (I would say child but you said their accounted for) or relative in hospital, and they try to pop back every day to feed the cat, water the plants, grab some bits, Give the older kids some normally, etc.

Parents work nights. Kids go to school, and stay at grandparents over night, so the only time they are in is that bit of time after school .

Blahcat · 12/05/2022 17:16

One of them (whoever visits daily) is holding the other one hostage there and moved the kids out so they don’t know. If they both visit, they’re holding another person hostage there and move out so the kids can’t tell.

MissMaple82 · 12/05/2022 17:18

My word, you need to get yourself or something!!!

Why?

Myshitisreal · 12/05/2022 17:19

They need to feed the sex slave trapped in the attic.

Why?
