to wonder whats going on with my neighbours?

I'll admit this is sheer nosiness on my part. I'm not really on speakers with the family so can't ask directly (although I may be able to find out via another neighbour at some point) It's such an odd situation I can't work out what's going on but I bet someone on here will be able to offer a plausible explanation.

We live in a typical suburban street, all homeowners. Family in question have (primary) school age kids, have lived here for about 10 years. I noticed about a fortnight ago that their car wasn't there overnight. No big deal, I assumed they were away on a break. But the next day the car was back, for an hour or two, and then gone again until the following day. I thought maybe one of the parents was working nights, but the house is definitely unoccupied, none of them are there at other times just this hour or so daily. At those times they're all here too and all seem to be in good health so that's not the reason.

I thought maybe some sort of damage to the house had happened that might mean they needed to move out (this happened to a relative who had subsidence for example) but it didn't make sense they'd come back daily, I know my relative had to move out completely and everything was put in storage.

They could be doing works to the house, but there's been no one else here (and as we're terraced we'd definitely hear any works).

I thought they might have moved out to rent it, but all their stuff still seems to be there (kids toys still in garden etc). I can't think of anything else - and I guess I'm interested because if they have moved I'm wondering if they're selling, if we'll get new neighbours etc.

I also wondered if they had a pet they couldn’t take with them that they are popping back to feed it. Or maybe a cannabis farm. Has anyone said that yet?

I'm also a nosy neighbor!

Last year the dog and I lived with my mum for a few months, as she was really struggling with the Covid situation. I did pop back to our house from time to time though, to make sure the electricity hadn't run out and collect post, etc.

They won the £184m in the lottery?

The family are all clearly well, as I said in my OP they are here daily. So no illness (to them) or domestic violence. And I'm pretty sure witness protection wouldn't square with them returning every day. If they'd suddenly disappeared without trace, I'm sure I would be concerned for their welfare. As matters stand having discounted those other reasons for them moving out, I'm now more worried about my home, which as a homeowner is pretty understandable I'd have thought?

My home costs me a lot of money, I don't just live here I work here too. Of the possibilities you list, the ones which are at all possible (ceiling caved in, a leak, a damp problem) have similar causes and could easily affect my home, just in the same way as pests or subsidence could. So I'm interested to know what it is, so I can keep an eye out for any similar issues in my home and potentially notify my own insurers.

I’m sure if it was something that would affect your home they would have notified you. It may have been a small house fire or they having the house rewired or something.

Sorry OP, but that doesn’t give you the right to know what’s going on with your neighbours. No right at all. Who do you think you are?

If your neighbours are dealing with an issue that could potentially affect your house then I am sure they would let you know.

Everyone has curiosities, it’s human nature. But this is extreme. You sound unhinged. If it’s affecting you this bad, then phone them up, ask them face to face the next time you see them. Or move.

Does the postie still go to their front door?

If not, then they have redirected their post to their new address.
Why not send them a polite brief letter asking if there issues with the house as you are concerned about subsidence etc.

I think you’ve had some really unkind comments here OP. It’s completely normal in my rural village for everyone to know everyone’s daily routine. So much so, that one morning we all noticed ‘Dave’ wasn’t hanging out of his bedroom window having his morning fag. We all go round banging and trying to kick the door down, eventually a neighbour gets a hammer to smash the back door open, and Dave was dead in his living room. I actually LIKE the thought that if something happened to me in my house my neighbours would know and help.
