To think you should not paint your house beige?

My good friend is paying a lot of money to have her house repainted. They’ve gone for one colour, ‘Natural Calico’, which appears to be a repackaging of beige. Am I being unreasonable to tell her this is a terrible idea?

I love beige. A much warmer and homelier colour than miserable old grey!

We have caramel latte and vanilla coloured walls and they look good enough to eat 😂

Ooh I’ve been looking at caramel latte for my bedroom.

whiteroseredrose · 09/05/2022 20:48

My house is mainly natural calico and natural hessian.

It has been the background for lots of colour changes over the last few years.

PS Definitely hasn't yellowed.

Beige isn’t yellow!

Totally! It's more like a light brown, latter colour.

I would say calico is more cream and magnolia is more yellowy!

I have a lot of egyptian cotton in my house...i love it.

Beige is Back

Sciurus83 · 09/05/2022 20:52

You've missed the memo that natural tones, beiges, greige (that's a thing!), calico, linen is what's in now, with greens and natural wood textures, grey and metallics is out. I'm all for it personally but it's down to taste, you don't have to like it but you would be very unreasonable to tell your friend what she should do with her house!

pussycatlickinglollyices · 09/05/2022 20:53

All rooms (and part of the garage) in my house are painted in Crown Ivory Cream (silk as I hate matt).
They've been this colour since we moved in 15+ yrs ago and will be for a good while yet. I seem to have dodged the grey, navy, yellow and pink bullets. Grin

Ooh I’ve been looking at caramel latte for my bedroom.

We love it but only have it in the biggest room (living room) which gets a lot of sun, bottom half of the hallway and bottom half of the stairwell.

The top halves are vanilla as is the main bedroom and kitchen, as I was worried about them being too dark given they are smaller rooms.

Definitely recommend if the room is not small though 👌

grapewines · 09/05/2022 20:53

You could, and she'd be justified in telling you to mind your own business. Not your house. Beige is not yellow.

AllFreeOwls · 09/05/2022 20:53

My last house was mainly painted natural Calico... It didn't yellow and didn't look like it aged. Just a solid choice for a neutral house.

At the least it's not the ghastly grey. I'm looking to move and keep seeing houses overpriced because they've been completely redecorated, in grey. My offer would allow for a complete redecorate!

MistyGreenAndBlue · 09/05/2022 20:55

Tell her wallpaper is back in Grin

faggyhagger · 09/05/2022 20:57

Most of the houses in our village have beige render, it's never occurred to me that it's bad! Looks fine to me.

I wouldn't want a stark white.

PrettyMaybug · 09/05/2022 20:58

What's wrong with beige? Would you rather it was all dull-as-dishwater grey? Grim, grimy, ghoulish grey?

PrettyMaybug · 09/05/2022 20:59

White throughout is awful. Would look like a hospital ward!

Thursday37 · 09/05/2022 21:01

I like natural calico. I’ve used it a lot.
I bloody hate grey.

purplecorkheart · 09/05/2022 21:07

Her house, her choice. My parents bought a house off the plans a few years ago. They painted their house a similar colour and their house seems much more airy and spacious than a neighbour who bought the same type house but used stronger different colours but they find their house more cosy. Both households are happy with their choices.
Stay out of it.

Trafficjamlog · 09/05/2022 21:07

Natural calico is a lovely colour

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 09/05/2022 21:09

Let her get on with it.

I can't stand beige or neutrals but I wouldn't presume to advise someone on how to decorate their own home.

Medicaltextbook · 09/05/2022 21:11

Nothing wrong with beige, neutral calico or nets in fact in the right place. Most important is going for things you like. (maybe unless you are planning to see soon and might want more neutral.)

Give an honest if asked before hand or you are going to live there. Otherwise I find the thread quite sad, it’s probably the neutral colour I would go for fashionable or not so sad to think I’d be judged by friends on it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/05/2022 21:12

ReadyToMoveIt · 09/05/2022 20:37

Warm neutrals are ‘in’, apparently.
If she likes it then what’s the issue? She’s the one living there!

We've always had warm neutrals, nice to know we're finally 'in' 😂

balboaconstrictor · 10/05/2022 03:00

YABU. You can have an opinion, but it's rude to make negative remarks about someone else's paint choices. Not your house, not your problem.

I have beige in some rooms, grey in others, even some greige. I also have lacy and voile curtains at some of our windows, because I actually like them. What's more, that they still sell them must mean I'm not the only one who does. 😉

fUNNYfACE36 · 10/05/2022 03:13

She should not decorate her own house how she chooses because you don't like it?
You sound like a narcissist!

Ponderingwindow · 10/05/2022 03:14

Where I live there is a color of beige paint that is so ubiquitous that you can go into any paint store of any brand and simply order it in its locally known moniker and they will know exactly what to mix up. It’s the default builder color. It’s the color you paint if you need to repaint everything neutral or need to do a paint refresh before selling. It ages well and it doesn’t look yellow.

I’ve come to loathe it, but half of my house is still painted in it because I can’t get DH to agree on colors to switch. He loves it.

it also makes an appearance on many house exteriors since we are required to use earth tones.

milkyaqua · 10/05/2022 03:14

You're not wrong, but don't tell her.
