To complain to the gym about the volume of the music?

I’ve been going to a gym for around the past 5 months. I love loads of the classes but I’m having a problem that a few of my favourites are slowly getting louder and louder. It’s become pretty unbearable and even with earplugs in it’s pretty loud. I like the woman running it but AIBU to complain as it’s putting me off going

Why not try mentioning it to them and asking if it can be changed, before you complain?

Fitterbyfifty · 09/05/2022 20:09

Yanbu I went for a free trial at the gym but didn't sign up as there was always loud music.

Coffeetree · 09/05/2022 20:14

Yes absolutely complain. As an instructor I always have the music at a normal level, like we can hear one another.

I think the spin trend made overly loud music popular. Honestly the reason some instructors blast the music is that they've blown their hearing after years of this. They don't even notice.

Definitely say something. They'd hate to lose an attendee over somewhat can be easily fixed.

evilharpy · 09/05/2022 20:18

I'm an instructor. What the music and mic sound like at the back of the room can be very different to what we hear at the front, depending on where the speakers are etc, so the instructor might not realise how loud it is. Definitely mention it.

ChitChatChatter · 09/05/2022 20:31

Yes mention it. A new circuits class started a while back at my gym with really loud music that you could hear even with earplugs. A number of us politely complained and it was turned down though the instructor wasn’t happy.

KatharinaRosalie · 09/05/2022 20:57

I'm an instructor. Just mention that it's a bit loud and I'll turn it down, honestly no problem - as a pp says, it sounds very different up front. I would be a bit 😕if you started with official complaints as your first step though without ever talking to me.

Er, no. My contract is with the gym not an individual instructor and if I have a problem, I’ll talk to the gym about it. In my case, others had previously asked her to turn the music down which she did for a couple of classes and then she racked it back up again.

Goldijobsandthe3bears · 09/05/2022 21:58

I once asked the instructor to turn down the ear splitting music but she just shouted at me that ‘it needs to be that loud to spur people on’

Lime37 · 09/05/2022 22:12

I wouldn’t be making “official complaints” before speaking to the instructor

keziah81 · 09/05/2022 22:18

God YANBU. I hate this so much too

BluebirdTree · 09/05/2022 22:23

I did try and ask her to turn it down last week which she did briefly but then roared half way through it to her assistant TURN IT UP as it was “such a good track” then starting shouting over it singing. It’s such a shame as it’s a fantastic class. I don’t want to make trouble and I’ll be polite about it but feeling better that I am not BU

Gosh I detest loud music in gyms. It’s counterproductive in classes as you can’t hear the instructor (or they crank it up because they’re too lazy to actually instruct) and pointless in the main gym where everyone has their own headphones anyway. Absolutely awful.

Blueberrywitch · 09/05/2022 22:33

God I am 1000% with you on this one! I left a very lovely gym because their music was SO LOUD. Absolutely painful. I’m at the gym to benefit my body not destroy my hearing. I find that if you complain they barely turn it down and then it’ll be loud again the next class, you have to choose your instructor. At a pump class last week not only was the music horrendous but the instructor counted out every single move “up down up down up down up down” in a very shrieky voice it was so awful I wanted to leave but was trapped near the middle with all my kit.

My tip would be to buy these www.alpinehearingprotection.co.uk/products/partyplug

dont balk at the cost, they are truly truly worth every penny. You won’t look back.

cherrytree63 · 10/05/2022 07:43

YANBU, I'd grumble about that too. I once complained about the volume of music at McDonald's, Sunday morning breakfast full of young families and they were blasting out gangsta rap 😅

KatharinaRosalie · 10/05/2022 08:44

Up to you of course. I had a class this morning, asked the people how the volume was, adjusted as requested. But I understand some people always prefer to talk to the manager.

Yes ‘some people’ 😂😋

BluebirdTree · 10/05/2022 18:59

I would be happy to speak to her about it, it’s not the case of going behind her back. But I have mentioned it in a class and it seemed to make no difference. If anything it’s getting worse.

That’s sort of the point🙄 She didn’t ask anyone and when asked to turn it down did so for a couple of sessions then racked it right back up again. Her class is right alongside the running and exercise machines so affected those not taking part in that class. So, yes, if I have a problem and can’t use the service I’ve paid for, I will escalate it.

Goldijobsandthe3bears · 10/05/2022 21:25

So yes, if she’s been asked me hasn’t followed through then escalate it, this was in reference to people suggesting to go straight to reporting without first speaking to the instructor

So why quote me? My first post makes it clear that she had already been spoken to. My point still stands: I've paid for a service - use of the gym - and if that's adversely impacted by the behaviour of 'some people' then yes, I will complain.

KatharinaRosalie · 11/05/2022 07:05

Because you replied 'er no' to my post where I said that it would be nicer to speak to the instructor first, before you escalate matters.
And your first post (09/05/2022 20:31) says that a number of you complained, it didn't mention to whom.

Most of us in front of the class do want to make the class fun for the participants - and it is sometimes challenging when people say the same class was simultaneously too loud and too quiet, too hot and too cold etc. But if several people have the same complaint and it's something we can fix, yes it is still appreciated if you first approach us and then escalate if needed. You probably also would not like if a colleague ran to HR for something minor you could have dealt with if they had just said something.

ChitChatChatter · 11/05/2022 08:37

And this kind of response is exactly why I would speak to the decision makers.

rookiemere · 11/05/2022 12:49

I have this exact issue.

It's a replacement instructor and my heart sinks if I see her arrive.
I feel awkward saying anything as she is young and I am old and I don't want to complain centrally as it seems petty. I must remember just to bring ear plugs with me.

nearlyspringyay · 11/05/2022 12:52

IME louder the better, drowns out the noise of the performance grunters but I do a lot of weights based classes.

Maybe there's a need to run quiet and loud classes.

woodpecker2 · 11/05/2022 12:57

I have been looking at business units and one of the first questions I ask is is there a gym nearby? As I can’t work with pumping music in the background and vibrating floors.

There doesn’t seem to be any planning restrictions on them so they can easily disturb a whole industrial estate. So YANBU!
