Worst interview ever...I need to leave the country, don't I?

Just had an interview it was, without fail, the worst, most embarrassing thing I've ever done.

One minute I was rambling, next minute I couldn't speak.
I was over enthused about the greatness of 'action plans'. To my shame, i even said I have action plans to clean my house 🙄

I cant remember the rest, I think my brain is trying to protect me from the shame I have brought upon myself.

I need to leave the country, don't I? The thought of ever bumping into the interview panel is filling me with fear.
Albu?

I yelled at the client that "I welcome criticism, it makes me try harder"

😀

I'm sure I said at one point that my key skill is "nurturing others so they can reach thier full potential"

Honestly as someone who does interviews I would have loved that answer!

And don't worry, there will definitely have been people worse than you, but at the very worst you'll have given the panel something to have a chuckle about, hehe.

bluebell34567 · 09/05/2022 16:25

When asked if I had any questions, I said "No, I'm just going to go find a corner and cry"
😂😂😂

ChuckBerrysBoots · 09/05/2022 16:26

In an interview for my first teaching job, having trained and qualified in a very relaxed “trendy” school, I referred to the children as “kids” and the headteacher asked me what farm I’d been working on and how many goats there were there 😬 I did actually get the job once I’d recovered a bit (thank god for the teaching crisis and the fact I was cheap!)

It's fine OP. If you really need an action plan to clean the house, then by the time you've organised getting out of the country it will all have blown over.

It will be OK. I still remember with horror an interview from years ago when they were really pressing me to come up with any negative qualities I had.

Under extreme pressure and desperate to not say anything work-related I said "Sometimes I drink a bit too much." Then I watched the chap write "drinks too much" on his pad. Mortified. Glad I didn't get the job actually, but the horror-shudders remained...

This is my favourite reply so far!

custardbear · 09/05/2022 16:28

You do realise you'll be offered this job and they'll say how impressed they were 😜

Somuddled · 09/05/2022 16:29

I once interviewed for an internal role. We were all really busy so the interview was set for 5.30pm by 5.50 it was going so badly I ended it myself. I told them it was really kind of them to interview me but we all knew I couldn't do the job and I couldn't, in good consciousness, have them miss any more of thier evening. The relief on thier faces was evident. Later they recommend me for another job because they said my self awareness stood out.

Still go for it, you might surprise yourself.

Although, saying that I suspect I don't have the experience for this job.
There is a specific type of paperwork that needs to be completed, when asked about my experience I said
"I'm not an expert, I am aware of it. I'll need training on it and if I don't know what I'm doing I'll ask someone for help

😬don't know why I said that, what a stupid answer.

That sounds a perfectly good response to me!

Years ago, I did an interview that was so bad that I asked if I could step outside as I felt so nervous and was rambling on and on.. I just needed a breather. They looked bemused but said OK, so I walked outside, got in the car and left.. I still shudder almost a decade later!!

I rarely genuinely LOL at posts but the image of the interviewers sitting in the room waiting for you to return, all "tumpty-tum...she's taking a while to compose herself...do you think she's alright?...the next candidate will be here if she doesn't hurry back...shall I nip out and see if she's okay?..." and you zooming away ever further into the distance never to be seen again has me properly chuckling😂

chisanunian · 09/05/2022 16:34

Has anyone else arrived at an interview, having just demolished a wall at the entrance to their car park?

No? Just me then.

Irishfarmer · 09/05/2022 16:34

@oakleaffy that isn't always true. My current boss was a bit unsure about hiring me. I am on paper over qualified and experienced for my job and yes could do hers, I have done hers! But I ran myself in to the ground in my last role. Honestly seriously affected my MH. This job is where I want to be and what I need. They are getting a "bargain" I am getting the balance I need in my life.

Anyway OP run away only option 😂 no I gave a hideous interview before. I told them way too much about my personal lift, tbf they kinda asked. I wish I wrote down everything I said I remember telling my friends that night who got a great laugh in the pub. I was nearly 2 hours I meet with 2 managers and 3 partners (not all together) anyway I got the job!!

Thank you you've made me laugh 😃

Oh god, it's coming back in bits and pieces.
When asked if I had any questions, I said "No, I'm just going to go find a corner and cry"
WTF is wrong with me?

🤣 bless you. I had what I thought was a horrendous interview and got offered the job so....

😱 I think you should have arrived like this ... 🥸

Plantstrees · 09/05/2022 16:39

I still recall an interview where I didn't understand a question so I asked them to repeat it (two interviewers in the interview). The person just re-read the question so I said I still didn't understand what they were asking. The other interviewer tried to explain, and they both appeared to be getting exasperated with me, but I still didn't know what they were talking about so I knew at that point that I had failed completely.

So wanky, very very wanky

I've only ever failed one interview and it was back in the late 90s. I was hungover from being out on the piss till the early hours very tired. The panel asked a question and i forgot it half way through the answer. I padded out the build up while i tried to remember it.

I still clearly remember the horror of hearing my mouth babbling away valiently while my brain fumbled around for what the question was.

It was awful. Like having an out of body experience. Time seemed to slow down and my face got hotter and hotter as the interviewers started to actually lean forwards slightly, in anticipation of the big reveal - which never came:

''...... so at the end of the day, when all things are equal and your confident that you've done meticulous research, mapped out a plan, and made sure your team is completely on board, you've taken careful note of what your closest competitor's approach is, and are certain that yours is stronger, but not too similar, you've worked out a safety net should the worst occur even though you've been over it all with a fine tooth comb ....... well !! The correct course of action is then completely obvious! ... It's .... erm ......... i'm sorry ....... wtf was the question again ??! ''

😂😂😂

Scrumbleton · 09/05/2022 16:49

I had one of those - was seconds away from saying - look we’re wasting one another’s time here I think We should call it quits. When HR called me to come back for a second interview I said you’re joking. Got the job tho and a 6 figure salary. I discovered afterwards that I was always the standout candidate because I had a couple of niche CV experience elements that others lacked that were important for the role. I also had a couple of subsequent interviews (promotion) and thought they went well ( and got excellent feedback) but didn’t get the job. It’s often more about the completion and your experience than what you actually say in interview.

mistermagpie · 09/05/2022 16:51

I've been there!

I'm a business analyst, have been for nearly 20 years, spreadsheets and all that are my bread and butter. Standard excel is actually a bit basic for my job. Anyway a few years ago I had an interview and there was an excel test. I opened it up and just stared blankly at it, panicking, like I'd never seen a spreadsheet in my life. I couldn't remember how to do anything, even working out a percentage.

Clearly I fucked that bit up and then had to do a panel interview where I waxed lyrical about my excel skills... they must have thought I was a complete fantasist!

I didn't get the job and just thanked my lucky stars that I never had to see any of them again.

You'll be fine OP, a bit of 'action plan' and 'strategy' enthusiasm would go down a treat where I work!

InconvenientPeg · 09/05/2022 16:51

I was asked at the end of an hour long pre screen interview over zoom, which had gone really well, if I had any questions. Instead of my stock answer, which I have given many times before, of Thank you, I think you've covered everything I need to know at this point; I said I was tired of being ghosted by recruiters so hadn't looked into their company 🤣 I have no idea what was going on in my brain, but it did make me think hard about the kind of jobs I was going for and I decided I was self sabotaging because I really didn't want to continue in the same line of work. Am now happily employed somewhere else on a slightly different part of my area of expertise!

And she did ghost me 😂

DomesticatedZombie · 09/05/2022 16:51

Tis a truth universally acknowledged that if you think you've done well in an interview, you haven't.

Lots of people interview really well and are shit at their jobs. Vice versa.

Take heart, OP!
