Do you have any simple effective tricks/products you do that you think really work or can't live without?

I've never really given much thought to my make up (i have a very simple routine, hasnt changed for 20 years!) and I'm lucky enough to have good skin but I'm nearing 40 and starting to feel like I need to maybe make a bit more effort, in the subtlest non permanent (ie non surgical!) way ideally 😂

For example:
Starting to lose definitely in my face shape, are those jade things really effective?

Starting to think about eye lash extensions or treatments etc.

Any miracle products?

Basically guys, any simple non invasive tricks or routines to make me feel more beautiful?!?!?! LOL!

Body tips welcome too... summer is coming.

I love the Nivea blue tub. Slather it on my face before bed. I don't use a day cream as don't feel I need it due to my nighttime ritual!
Eyelash curlers
Brown/Black mascara and eyeliner looks much better and more youthful that a harsh black.
Personally I also find a pop of colour eyeshadow looks much more youthful than browns/neutrals.

Another vote for the nivea blue tub :)
Its quite rich so i always cleanse and use liberally as a night cream.... my skin looks nice when i wake up...
I also cleanse with a bar of dove soap and i know that skin care experts would tutting at that but im 36 and my skin gets complimented at work or by friends...

I don't wear much make up these days as i feel it can be aging especially heavy eye make up... but i do use fake tan all over and i think that helps to keep me looking healthy

DoesItEverEnd · 07/05/2022 20:30

sheer foundation I like Clinique even better and much cheaper but really good e.l.f sheer satin foundation

i always add just a little Lucas pawpaw ointment or Vaseline under my eyes and top of cheek bones to stop any creasing of make up

heavy make up when older tends to no longer look over made up but more comical (like Betty Davis in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane) I still wear flicked black eyeliner but less eye shadow and blusher on a night out

when skin is very dry pure vitamin e oil

You people not happy with their teeth I had braces at 47!! Took less than a year and cost £1500.

Good for you, you must be so happy with the results! My grandmother got braces in the 1970's when she was 54, and she said it was the best thing she ever did for herself. She had beautiful teeth until she died at 98.

I think it's important to have a good base or anything you put on top won't work. So for example, your face, makes sure it's well moisturised or makeup will accentuate any dryness. I usually use a peptide serum, moisturiser, then spf

I don't really wear a lot of makeup, but my personal favs are a decent highlighter and blush, concealer. Maybelline anti age eraser is good

If you're looking for a quick fix, then I've heard hydra facials can be pretty effective. Or tear trough filler if you have any hollowness under your eyes to look more "awake"

Other things which is more long term, would be stuff like retinol/Tretinoin

Booboobibles · 07/05/2022 21:02

I always look terrible when I do my eyeshadow in the way that most people seem to do it ie. dark shadow in the socket.

Keep everything around your eyes as clean and bright as possible, so very pale concealer, no eyeshadow but black liquid liner on upper lids with or without a wing. I contour under my eyes in the crease with a light brown Bourgeois eyebrow pencil and then use mascara to make it less obvious. This makes eyes look huge! Also put a bit of highlighter pencil on the inner corners of your eyes.

Dye your brows and use a light fake tan…I use Dove gradual tan stuff because I hate the ones with a guide colour. Oh don’t put the tan on after you’ve dyed your brows or they’ll go orange!

Pyewhacket · 07/05/2022 21:03

Drink lots of water.

Yamyam13 · 07/05/2022 21:11

Wow amazing replies! Thank you all - so many good recommendations.

I eat very well as cooming & nutrition are my passion and Luckoly it's part of my work, 98% homemade and huge focus on seasonal vegetables.
Hardly any sugar, but my main vice is booze. But cutting back slowly over time, finding I enjoy it less and less, and less quantity. Can & should drink more water!
I'm very active, and out walking 2 hours a day thanks to dog.

In terms of make up, I have used Laura Mercier's tinted moisturiser with SPF as my 'foundation' for 20 years and still swear by it. I don't mess around with my skin much in terms of other moisturing etc, as it doesn't like it. The less I do the better.
I do need new concealer for the increasingly prominent dark circles so thank you for the reccs!

Agree about brown eye liner and mascara - much softer.

One thing I have never 'done' is brows. Have never had them threaded, just the occasional pluck myself. And never ever have I used a pencil on them or anything! But am starting to feel that it is time they came into play, as a PP said, they can add a lot of definition? And a more polished look?

Keep em coming! Thank you all

Smile.

Not with my gnashers 😂
Extractions and dentures coming here soon. (No bone graft will work)

God, threads lime this depress me. I don't know why I read them.

I have a 6 month old baby who doesn't sleep well and I'm pregnant with number 2. I barely run a brush through my hair these days!

NRRK28 · 07/05/2022 21:58

Whiten my teeth with crest whitening strip every 3 months. My teeth always pearly white people always compliment me about that.

always have manicured nails. Just simple nude colour nails will do. Natural or nude colour feel more classy in my opinion.

always use SPF and always reapply every 2 hours. I use the invisible mist for reapply over makeup.

My youngest is 2 and ive only just started wearing make up again recently... the idea of having a a skin care/ make up routine was ridiculous.... ive only just now started to care again

Summersdreaming · 07/05/2022 22:08

I know you said non permanent but having my brows microbladed really improved my face. Brows + lash extentions and I can get ready in 5 minutes and still look good, it has made me feel glam even on bad days.

weegiemum · 07/05/2022 22:14

Moisturise! I've never had a skin routine beyond washing and moisturising. Body shop vitamin E cream. I'm regularly told I look younger then my 51 years.

sjxoxo · 07/05/2022 22:20
  • fake tan is a gamechanger
  • retinol or lactic acid on face once a week
  • Well kept eyebrows & nails
  • a decent hair colour
Moonshine5 · 07/05/2022 22:37

Microblade eyebrows

Eyelash perm
Cream blush try Fenty range
dab light eyeshadow/ highlighter inner corner of eyes
100% explore options re: teeth can literally impact our mental health re: depression
Tell your inner voice to remind you how beautiful and lovely you are inside and out (most important)

Imissmoominmama · 07/05/2022 22:46

I’ve started taking marine collagen- my face looks more… glowy.

1WomanWonder · 07/05/2022 22:49

I can really recommend not caring quite so much about your appearance. I mean...I know it's a bit of a shift, but the long term benefits are worth considering.

LaingsAcidTab · 07/05/2022 22:49

Face flannel and natural soap
Retinol
Rose hydrolat
Nivea blue

LaingsAcidTab · 07/05/2022 22:51

Oh - and giving up alcohol.

LaWench · 07/05/2022 22:52

Lash lift

Roots done

Brow wax and tint

I've had awful spots for the last few months but they've cleared up with salicylic acid serum morning and night. I follow this with intensive serum and then night or day cream.

Baby oil on feet at night = super soft feet.

crj123 · 07/05/2022 22:58

Great stuff here.

One question: people recommending Nivea Blue, do you mean the melt in mask or the regular blue tub?

Sapphire05 · 07/05/2022 22:59

Another vote for Charlotte Tilbury Flawless filter. I wear it every day now especially if I’m not wearing any other make up. I saw an interview with Adele and she said she does this too! 😂

I really like the Charlotte Tilbury contour wand to add shape to the face and it’s the easiest and most subtle one I’ve tried. Would definitely recommend.

For brows the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz is my go to, it’s a fail safe.

Want2beme · 07/05/2022 23:03

Who does your microwaving?

Which retinol do you recommend?

HardStareBear · 07/05/2022 23:23

Strong eyebrows in a natural shape. Not too dark. I'm a very dark brunette but have not been blessed in the eyebrow department. I use an ashy mid-brown powder to define my brows and it makes me look so much better.
A rosy pink, creamy lipstick - no shimmer and no matte.
A glowy highlighter on brow bones and cheekbones - none of this strobing stuff that you can see from space.
Decent day and night moisturiser that suits your skin. Mine is a Sainsbury's one from their Source of Nature range which is as cheap as chips but suits my excema-prone, very sensitive skin.

I’ve been there! Mine are 4 and 6 and im
slooooowly coming out the other side but not enough to adopt more than 1 beauty tip at the absolute most! You’ll get there again!! Or decide you don’t care, which is even better…
