To me it was having a boyfriend and being thin.
Thought that if I’d had those, everything would be fine šŸ«£šŸ™„

Also artist, actors and bands: had to know everything about them.
Now I can just appreciate their talents, don’t need to know anything about their personal lives.

Having straight hair
My acne
Leonardo DiCaprio
Magazines
But most of all, my cds.

wobytide · 07/05/2022 15:10

Having stairs that make loud creaking noises when walked on

WahWahWahs · 07/05/2022 15:12

Split ends. Everyone was obsessed with them and I haven’t given them a second thought since about 1998 šŸ˜‚

PolynesianParadise · 07/05/2022 15:18

My cd and tape collection.

Time40 · 07/05/2022 15:20

Music. I had music on all the time. Now in my 50s I hardly ever listen to music, even the stuff I like

Awww, that's so sad! But it's true of many older people. I'd actually love to know why.

My face: spent hours gazing in the mirror worrying about zits and navel gazing about my looks. Took me years to realise the best beauty treatment is to smile. People notice a happy face! Nowadays I do wear makeup but happy to go out without it.
What to wear: I agonised over every outfit and whether it would make 7stone me look fat! Nobody would notice or comment nowadays on what I wear unless I turned up stark naked šŸ˜‰

ZenNudist · 07/05/2022 15:30

Knowing the latest bands and all the newest songs, Everything in the melody maker, having tickets for gigs with said bands, being able to sing all the words.

I wanted to be a music journalist. Sooooo glad I didn't do that!!

Oh yes, there were shampoo ads that claimed the shampoo mended split ends. They couldn’t say that these days because it’s bollocks. Nothing mends split ends ex ept cutting them off.

LaBellina · 07/05/2022 15:43

Straight hair
A tan year round
Being loved by my parents

BluebellCockleshell123 · 07/05/2022 15:47

What other people thought about me.

I was such a people pleaser as a teenager and did & said many things just to get people to like me. I am so much more confident now I’m older.

Also big & permed hair. WTF was I thinking!!!

Imohsotired · 07/05/2022 15:51

Jeans labels… so much money wasted on miss 60, diesel, Abercrombie!

MayorDusty · 07/05/2022 15:55

What was the stuff in the white tube called? Vitapoint? With a pink banner I think.

kateandme · 07/05/2022 15:56

It was the emaciated era when I was impressionable.f* horrific time for girls.
Love or what it was portrayed as in one tree hill! So wanting someone to love me for me over the beautiful girls!
Jeans flared, baggy, stopped it went through phases but always jeans
Foods my friends had- more fun treat style.we have good food but more meals.now I am forever grateful for my parents food choices and helping us get good meals, cooking, knowledge.and realise we still had all the good stuff just not pizza every night like my mates.
Shaving
Fashion.trendy brands.
Being cool not clever
Being "boring" because deep down I didn't want to get pissed shag and party and would much rather snuggle indoors.
Popularity
Cereal choices!
Too much to list actually.i was just thinking ofvthis today as I cringed at a teen drama.

gwanwyn · 07/05/2022 15:58

Fitting in - but not fitting in meant being bullied by peers and even few teachers so yes weight, hair clothes not talking about how hard I was studying, hiding how clumsy I was (turns out there was a reason dyspraxia) etc.

As an adult I have a lot more agency about situations so the impact on me is easier to avoid.

DownTownAbbey2 · 07/05/2022 15:59

My exam results
weighing more than 8 stone

Laiste · 07/05/2022 16:00

Being up to date with music.

I remember around my late 20s (up to my neck in 3 young DCs) being suddenly aware that i didn't know who half the bands were on the radio any more.

And even more strange - i didn't care! šŸ˜‚

KangarooKenny · 07/05/2022 16:00

The top 10.

toastedcat · 07/05/2022 16:00

Being extremely left wing and political, wannabe rebellious.

Laiste · 07/05/2022 16:01

Oh and not smiling and always wearing black.

A girl I knew used to spend whole lessons in school taking each individual hair and ripping the split end open. I used to hate to see it.

Funkyslippers · 07/05/2022 16:05

I hated my rosy complexion and was always trying to cover it up. I like it now
I also seeked validation from men a little too much. I thought if you didn't end up with a man at the end of an evening out you were a failure. How wrong I was!

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 07/05/2022 16:07

Time40 I don't think it's sad at all. It's my choice. I listen to R4 if I want noise.
I suspect it was a way of controlling my environment when I was younger but having dc meant there was nothing but noise and I craved quiet. Sitting and listening to bird song is enough.

BobHadBitchTits · 07/05/2022 16:07

It's sad to think that my high school friends felt like my whole world back then, but now they're little more than strangers.

TimBoothseyes · 07/05/2022 16:09

Being popular and fitting in. 40 years on I couldn't give a fat rats crack what people think of me
