To just not get 'the book of Mormon' spoiler alert

So the Book of Mormon hit our city last month, think it's on a 4 week run. I love the theatre, love musicals, so when my friend asked me to go when the tickets got released 3 years ago I just said yes. Knew little about it. Did a bit of reading before we went this week, was expecting adult humour etc. Everyone kept saying I'd love it, it's amazing, so funny.
Now don't get me wrong, I laughed at some bits, but none of the songs were great and to be honest the 'sex with a baby' gag turned My stomach.

I can't be the only one who thinks it's overhyped and a bit crap? To me it was trying to be controversial!

It’s written by the people who write South Park, so if you wouldn’t watch that you won’t enjoy BoM! However, lots and lots of people do like both…

TippledPink · 06/05/2022 23:01

I absolutely love the soundtrack- the songs are so good! I listen to them all the time. The actual storyline, some of it I didn't find that funny, it lost me a little in the middle. But overall the soundtrack won me over!

mynameiscalypso · 06/05/2022 23:02

Agreed. We saw it a few years ago. It was fine but pretty forgettable.

sickofthisnonsense · 06/05/2022 23:05

I'm with you Op.
Went with a big group. DH had seen it and said it was so funny.
I laughed a bit but more because of the shock than actually finding it funny.
I'm not sure it's ageing well.

GingeryLemons · 06/05/2022 23:07

Edgy in America, where there are a lot more Mormons to offend, but here it just isn't that big a deal. Less than half of 1% of the population is Mormon, or something like that, so they just aren't part of the cultural awareness here.

KrisAkabusi · 06/05/2022 23:08

I disagree. I saw it a few months ago, sounds like the same touring production as you. I absolutely loved it, it's now one of my favourite musicals.

OllyBJolly · 06/05/2022 23:09

Waste of an evening in London in my opinion! So many friends raved about it. Had we not been jammed into the middle of the row we would have left. Totally unfunny, contrived, try too hard nonsense. DH and I have very different senses of humour but neither of us thought it was any good.

Penguinsaregreat · 06/05/2022 23:17

I saw it recently and really enjoyed it.
It's certainly not for everyone. I like South Park though and Family Guy. Love the episode of Family Guy which has been banned in lots of southern states in the U.S. The one where the writers make no bones about their stance on a woman's rights to abortion.
I think it's one of those marmite things you either love it or hate it.
I was more aghast at the televised production of Hamilton where one of the opening lines was "The bastard son of a whore." That's not something I'd pay money to see but plenty of folk don't seem to have a problem with misogyny .
Personally I thought the Book of Mormon was very cleverly written although extremely close to the knuckle.

minipie · 06/05/2022 23:23

I thought it was very funny in parts and some of the songs were great and really catchy (loved “Turn it Off”).

I also thought it was pretty racist about Africa and Africans. Obviously mocking Mormons too but that was expected, I mean it’s the whole premise, whereas the African stereotyping was a shock.

Overall I enjoyed it but I definitely felt very uncomfortable in various places. I think it’s dated badly tbh, things have moved on since it was written.

Spaghetti0 · 06/05/2022 23:24

I didn’t think much of it either
in fact I thought it was poor. It was not a lot of things
and on top of all of that I didn’t think it was remotely funny

WeeFecker · 06/05/2022 23:25

I liked it

Ratrick · 06/05/2022 23:29

I really enjoyed it, found it extremely funny, thought a lot of the songs were great, and liked the general message.

Caveat, per a pp, the portrayal of the Ugandans left me a uncomfortable. I suppose the writers intended to reference the racist trope as being precisely that, but I don’t think they were entirely successful.

lap90 · 06/05/2022 23:32

I really liked it.
I love theatre and had no interest in seeing it for years... i say that as someone who visits the theatre almost monthly!
Although during lockdown i read up a lot about Mormonism which sparked my interest in seeing the show which of course pokes fun.
I'd happily see it again. Packed theatre too.
I was left with the song 'turn it off' stuck in my head... reminds me of some of the Mormons i've come across on insta.
Each to their own!

mocktail · 06/05/2022 23:34

I loved it! Even though South Park isn't my thing at all.

Nospringchickendipper · 06/05/2022 23:40

I saw it a few years ago and thought it was funny but the baby reference was a step too far for me.

Edinburghwaverley · 06/05/2022 23:45

YABU, it’s cheap, basic ‘humour’

Edinburghwaverley · 06/05/2022 23:46

YAnotBU

Thatswhyimacat · 06/05/2022 23:50

Well I've seen it twice and everyone I've recommended it to, loved it. It got more positive reaction in the theatre than anything else I've ever been to see. Obviously it's not for everyone but I don't think it's fair to condemn something for not being your thing, for example I thought Matilda was absolutely rubbish on stage but lots like it so it must have something going for it.

Thatswhyimacat · 06/05/2022 23:51

@Edinburghwaverley you see, I see basic humour as 'man falls over' or 'people miss each other through misunderstandings' etc. What book of Mormon does isn't subtle but I wouldn't call it cheap or basic, it's been very much thought about.

ouch44 · 06/05/2022 23:55

Thought I was the only one! Got bored half way through and would have loved to have left. Now it was funny for the first maybe 30 minutes but after that I began to actually find it a bit offensive and got bored of the same humour all the time. I'm actually an atheist who really enjoys that kind of humour too.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 06/05/2022 23:56

I enioyed it, but I didn't feel it lived up to all the hype I'd heard about it. I was expecting it to be the best, most hilarious thing I'd ever seen and it wasn't. I found Avenue Q much funnier.

splendidsue · 06/05/2022 23:56

Worst show I've ever seen. If I had known it was written by the same people as South park I'd never have gone. Silly humour and just not funny

whiteroseredrose · 06/05/2022 23:58

YANBU. We went at Christmas. My family thought it was really funny. I was wincing.

I expected the Mormon Church to get a ribbing, but not Africa.

bellamountain · 07/05/2022 00:10

It's utter crap. Utter waste of time and the people I know who think it's fab are so generic it figures! I'd rather eat glass than watch it again.

MintTeaLady · 07/05/2022 00:16

I was so disappointed. I was all set to love it and have it up there as a favourite but I just didn’t find it that funny.
