To just not get 'the book of Mormon' spoiler alert

So the Book of Mormon hit our city last month, think it's on a 4 week run. I love the theatre, love musicals, so when my friend asked me to go when the tickets got released 3 years ago I just said yes. Knew little about it. Did a bit of reading before we went this week, was expecting adult humour etc. Everyone kept saying I'd love it, it's amazing, so funny.
Now don't get me wrong, I laughed at some bits, but none of the songs were great and to be honest the 'sex with a baby' gag turned My stomach.

I can't be the only one who thinks it's overhyped and a bit crap? To me it was trying to be controversial!

I loved it - the humour and the music!

jamoncrumpets · 07/05/2022 13:31

I saw it with the original cast on Broadway on my honeymoon, which included Josh Gad (Olaf) and Andrew Rannells (Elijah from Girls). Best honeymoon ever.

And Matthew Broderick has no involvement with BoM, you're probably thinking of The Producers.

Or the lion king 😂

Queenoftheashes · 07/05/2022 13:33

So did people actually not find it funny that a Mormon had the Book of Mormon shoved up his arse?

A lot of pursed lips around...

WOW!

I was more aghast at the televised production of Hamilton where one of the opening lines was "The bastard son of a whore."

You realise Hamilton was born in the 18th century, right? How do you expect to tell the story of his life, out of his mouth and the mouths of his contemporaries, without talking about how his birth and origins were regarded?

Penguinsaregreat · 07/05/2022 19:43

Greg and?
There are other words they used as well one beginning with the letter N. They didn’t use that in the musical though did they?

Penguinsaregreat · 07/05/2022 19:45

Also you aren’t trying to claim that Hamilton is historically accurate are you?

TheKeatingFive · 07/05/2022 19:50

Also you aren’t trying to claim that Hamilton is historically accurate are you?

where has anyone said that?

the line evokes how Hamilton would have been seen in the period. Unfortunately those views would have been widespread and nothing is achieved by whitewashing that. Sanitising the past is really problematic

Comefromaway · 07/05/2022 19:54

I went to a show/play recently that did use the n word. Written by a black writer. To show attitudes at the time.

if you didn’t like bad language don’t watch Hamilton.

TheKeatingFive · 07/05/2022 19:55

The N word is hugely political, I don't think such a high profile show could think of using it, even they wanted to.

I did find myself checking the room to see how many Africans where there. None. Thank god I think because I bet everyone was doing the same. It was so offensive to them it made me cringe. However I loved everything else about it and I bet the original with Mathew Broderick was amazing on Broadway.

Out of interest, how would you have been able to tell they were Africans?

Yes I am.

doadeer · 07/05/2022 20:57

I agree. I thought the raping babies jokes were vile and it was so racist. My DH loves south park - but we wanted to leave at the interval. Hated it.

PlasticineMeg · 07/05/2022 20:59

See I thought the songs were brilliant, I especially love Hasa Diega Ebowai.

The sex with a baby thing actually happens, what should be turning your stomach is the fact that there’s still no education in many parts of the world WRT AIDS and the pedophilia is normalised

badg3r · 07/05/2022 21:18

I really liked it but saw it I guess around ten years ago in London. I think it is quite "of its time" - some of the jokes and content already feel a bit dated.

Same here. I laughed when I saw it, but when a few songs popped up on my phone playlist they were just thin and unfunny. So many other recent works have been so much better.

HermioneWeasley · 07/05/2022 21:32

I loved it, laughed so hard I couldn’t breathe and I’m not a South Park fan,

overall it’s a very sweet message and ending.

it absolutely was believed that sex with a Virgin cured AIDS and younger and younger girls were being raped as a result. There is also still FGM and local gang lords. This is hardly the whole story of Africa, but it is in parts. The contrast of the two extremes is the point.

PurpleFlower1983 · 07/05/2022 21:35

I saw it when it opened in London and thought it was fab, hilarious etc. I think it’s past it’s peak now and was definitely of a time. Saw the latest production and it’s a bit like adult panto.

Asperia · 08/05/2022 20:52

I loved it but see that it wouldn’t be for everyone.

I thought Hamilton was completely overhyped. It was decent but not better than that.

I’ve only seen it on DisneyPlus but was so disappointed by it.

DP and I got through the first half but decided to take a bit of an intermission (frankly because we were bored) only to give up completely after reading that the first half is meant to be the better of the two.

Not my type of music though, so I appreciate others may feel very differently.

Avenue Q is another one that must be a bit dated now? Never actually seen it but liked the soundtrack as a teen and wanted to watch it. Some of the songs seem like they wouldn’t be that funny nowadays

ResentfulLemon · 09/05/2022 10:15

YABU. We thought Book of Mormon was brilliant, the ultra critical view that Stone and Parker have of how religion twists things to suit a specific agenda but at the same time can be helpful is faultless. Including weaving more modern 'devotions' like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings into the narrative some fans truly behave like they are religions

The Ugandan side of things was really uncomfortable, but again - they were shining a light on some of the ludicrous things that are still happening and believed in some African countries.

Stone and Parker are universally critical of everything. All countries are ridiculous, all religions are liable to be mocked...although they are do appear slightly obsessed with Mormons the film Orgasmo centred on them too

As a musical, the songs hold their own and I still listen to them on my playlist...plus they're a huge improvement on their first musical - Cannibal the musical (although there are some irritatingly catchy songs in that).

and for the snippy PP there's nothing generic about my husband or me

I saw it years ago on the first professional tour, then more recently in 2019. It's still funny and relevant and they have updated some things such as references to Trump etc.
