Just started working nights in a care home and surprised I get same pay as day staff for a ten hour night shift.

So you work days aswell there

why didn’t you know the pay before starting work there?

Maybe some people are aware but needed a job!

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 07/05/2022 11:58

I work in the care home night shift and I get paid more than the day staff.

Just learnt that it’s same pay for Christmas Day and other bank holidays.

OP find another place where they pay better. We get time and half pay on Christmas, New Years and all the bank holiday and any overtime you get paid more

tomatoandherbs · 07/05/2022 12:12

Well yes @Roastonsun8

but given the op was “surprised” to find out the night rate same as day rate after she’d been paid, would indicate she wasn’t aware of the pay rate in her contract (and she works day and night shifts)

Scarlettjones24 · 07/05/2022 19:43

@tomatoandherbs
No idea what your getting at. I knew the rate of pay when I took the job. I’ve only just started working nights and days, was previously just on days.

As if it's not scandalous enough as it is, younger care workers are paid less than older counter parts. When I was in care as a 20/21 year old I was paid significantly less on Mon wage then the other carers who were 25 and older. It's a thankless job and many companies will try and get away with paying as little as possible.

Needsomeadvice33 · 20/08/2022 20:52

I remember them days. Apply for NHS if you can!

Frequency · 20/08/2022 20:56

I get an 11% shift allowance added to my annual salary. When I was in care, no I got the same rate as day staff.

Dee03 · 22/08/2022 03:54

@Jellytottss funnily enough I've applied to my local NHS hospital, just waiting to hear back Smile

Worked a few jobs with night shifts and no extra pay. DP currently does alternate days/nights with no extra for nights either

RobertSmithsLipstick · 22/08/2022 04:17

No extra for nights, and nothing other than a flat rate for a sleep-in shift, regardless of being woken through the night, and having to get up an hour before the day shift begins, in order to start the day without a mad rush.

A good friend of mine worked for a homeless shelter. (after a few years in a care home)

With the shelter, she got a slight increase in hourly rate by working nights.

Some staff would see it as the easy option, but for her it was a very busy shift, mostly centred around kicking out the undesirables that came to the shelter to sell drugs etc. Trust me she deserved that extra 50p per hour dealing with all the shit.

@shivawn yup this was when I was a student so it was still worth my while doing a day shift where pay ended at 11pm, a sleep-in night and then the following day which started at 7am and that got my hours in for the week. We got a token one-off payment of £25 for the night but no hourly wage because in theory we were asleep.

I'd you were woken up in the night several times (more than twice) and had to do catt support, the whole night becomes chargeable and your old employers were breaching minimum wage legislation.

You should have been paid for hours you worked and there are rules when a night shift sleeping rate becomes fully a waking chargeable night.

lovelilies · 22/08/2022 05:01

I get £5 ph extra on nights

Redglitter · 22/08/2022 05:32

I get around 20% extra for working shifts. Quite honestly wouldn't do it without an enhanced payment

BarbaraofSeville · 22/08/2022 07:07

Most people do, but care work is well known to be absolutely terrible for pay and conditions so it's not surprising that you don't as it's not a legal requirement. Never assume these things apply in your particular circumstances as everywhere is different.

They probably bank on nights being preferable to some people to fill the shifts - eg a parent can work overnight while their partner is at home looking after DC and they don't have to pay for any childcare.

NorthernLights5 · 14/01/2023 15:11

Nope we didn't even get anything extra for Christmas day! Also care and a pp is correct, they'll pay as little as they can get away with. Most care homes are using agency at the moment which are really expensive. I'll never understand why they don't put carer pay up a bit to attract and retain staff rather than paying for agency.

I work for one company but go to a few of their homes as a senior. Most have a high number of people with advanced dementia so are busy. But even if it's a quieter home there's always something to do. If we have a quiet half hour I crack on with some cleaning.

NorthernLights5 · 14/01/2023 15:25

Oh didn't realise it's an old thread as it was suggested! Sorry
