Just started working nights in a care home and surprised I get same pay as day staff for a ten hour night shift.

When I was an NHS care assistant we got time and a third for nights and Saturdays and time and two thirds for any Sunday hours (day or night)

shivawn · 06/05/2022 20:47

That's crap, I used to work in a private care home and they didn't pay extra for nights either. They'd only pay an extra €1 an hour for working on a Sunday. Now I work in a government run care setting (in Ireland) and get time and a quarter for nights and double time on Sundays. Would never go back to working in the private sector again, pay and conditions are horrendous.

Dimplepie · 06/05/2022 20:52

Yes I get 33% uplift for nights. Work in a youth group home & nights are often the busiest time.

teenagetantrums · 06/05/2022 20:54

I work in a care home. Not as a career. But l know the night staff get an extra £2 an hour.

Mochatatts · 06/05/2022 20:59

I've worked in care homes, residential homes, as agency and permanent staff. Nights rarely get paid more than days. Sometimes clients sleep and sometimes it's none stop all night, barely chance to go to the loo, with half the staff as days.

MakingNBaking · 06/05/2022 21:02

Yes, we get an extra 10% and another 10% on top of that for weekend shifts

Scarlettjones24 · 06/05/2022 21:03

Shame. To those asking I work a variety of shifts. Working nights is really hard going so does seem wrong to me.

I used to do nights in a care home 8pm til 8am and I got the same pay (min wage) as day staff. Scandalous.

AnotherDelphinium · 06/05/2022 21:06

No, we get no premium for nights, weekends or bank holidays! - transport

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/05/2022 21:06

Yes. McDonalds pays £2 per hour more for night shifts.
not comparable work, obviously, but as a global conglomerate they presumably follow best practice.

that’s shocking. Our local transport company runs iconic seaside trams (as well as regular transport) and night pay is significantly higher.

Awcw1234 · 06/05/2022 21:08

I work 24’7 shifts. I get a 33% shift allowance on top of my salary for doing so. No way would I do nights without it!

shivawn · 06/05/2022 21:08

Tortoisetroubles · 06/05/2022 15:35

That's normal for care work. We used to get day rate up until 11pm then not get paid at all for nights until 7am because they were said to be 'sleeping nights' even though the person I supported rarely slept before midnight and woke frequently.

@Tortoisetroubles Am I reading that right? You didn't get paid at all between 11pm-7am? So you were working 8 hours for free??

Do you have a NVQ 2? Apply for NHS or the Bank... recently have changed their day pay rates to £16.00 odd an hour this is for agency workers.

NHS pays a lot better than care homes OP

You've never heard of waking night shifts? Aye here's £30. Btw you will be up every hour on the hour.

Cheeseontoast32 · 06/05/2022 21:31

I used to do 'sleep ins' at a supported living home. Paid per hour on minimum wage. Sometimes slept through but often woken up

Agreeeeed · 06/05/2022 21:35

this is why there aren’t enough carers. And often the good ones don’t stay.
they are expected to give their heart and soul to a job, ideally care for others as they would for their own family members.
and yet the don’t get a decent living wage.
Let alone extras like unsociable shift allowance.
it’s sad for people who need care. But I can’t blame carers for leaving when this is the thanks they get.

Tortoisetroubles · 06/05/2022 21:41

@shivawn yup this was when I was a student so it was still worth my while doing a day shift where pay ended at 11pm, a sleep-in night and then the following day which started at 7am and that got my hours in for the week. We got a token one-off payment of £25 for the night but no hourly wage because in theory we were asleep.

PhoenixReincarnated · 06/05/2022 21:51

Support worker - nmw day and night shifts.

Scarlettjones24 · 06/05/2022 21:56

They get a flat sleepover rate but it seldom compares to minimum wage.

MermaidSwimming · 06/05/2022 22:32

Same as day rate, we got told we didn't qualify for antisocial enhanced pay as we chose to work nights. I left as soon as I found another job

Dee03 · 06/05/2022 23:07

I work 12 hour night shifts in a care home and get paid the same as day shift workers....

Desiredeffect · 06/05/2022 23:28

Care work they pay crap day or night shift. Doing nights on the same rate as day staff is ridiculous. Working antisocial hours to should be paid. More than the days.

Scarlettjones24 · 07/05/2022 09:43

Just learnt that it’s same pay for Christmas Day and other bank holidays.

OP posts:
tomatoandherbs · 07/05/2022 11:03

So you work days aswell there

why didn’t you know the pay before starting work there?
