Primary School pizza

orchardgirl4 · 05/05/2022 19:31

My child's school has arranged a pizza day as a school trip for year R (4 and 5 year olds). They had a pizza activity day at school a few months ago, and a couple of months before that the school catering company had a pizza day. With junk food advertising just announced, by UK gov, to be banned before 9pm and childhood obesity rates at 25.5% of children by end of year 6 and 15.4% overweight, I am quite cross and fed up of pizza being normalised and hyped up by the school. I want them to instead take the opportunity to cook a healthy dish, or look at and taste different seasonal veg and fruit.
If I complain to the school, is this an overreaction on my part? Would it make it difficult to have conversations with my child's teacher in future, having complained? Or am I ahead of the learning curve (I work with type 2 diabetic patients so I am very aware) and I should pull them up on this?

It's pizza, not meth.
😂😂😂

CharChar91 · 05/05/2022 21:08

Sounds like a super fun trip to me! Pizza isn't necessarily 'unhealthy' if part of a balanced diet. Making pizzas can be a really fun way to encourage children to 'cook' and experiment with new food/toppings.

boredwithfoodprob · 05/05/2022 21:09

It depends what kind of pizza it is. My husband has a pizza oven and he makes sour dough pizza every week with homemade tomato sauce and heathy toppings. I definitely wouldn’t class it junk food and neither would my kids. It can definitely be a healthy meal.

LondonQueen · 05/05/2022 21:11

Get over yourself, you can eat pizza as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

saraclara · 05/05/2022 21:11

I like white bread. I also like wholemeal bread. I eat whichever I fancy on any given day. Because I have a normal relationship with food.

A wholemeal pizza base is an abomination. A pizza with white dough, tomato paste and a sprinkling of cheese is far from an.unhealthy food. Now deep fry it and you've got another story. But seriously, unless you have a centimeter thick layer of cheese and then you slather olive oil on top (or add fried toppings, but who does that?) it's hard to make a pizza any more unhealthy than a cheese sandwich.

I took my class on a Pizza Express trip. It was great. And there were no unhealthy options for them to make their pizza with.

Encouraging kids to cook? How dare they?

Haffiana · 05/05/2022 21:11

So many people are afraid and anxious about food these days. Posting about it on a social media platform is trying to 'normalise' your food issues, OP.

If people agree with you it makes you feel in control. That is what 'normalising' looks like.

Normal people who have a normal relationship with food do not behave like this.

boredwithfoodprob · 05/05/2022 21:11

Also, I don’t think it’s pizza that is particularly contributing to the UK’s obesity crisis. It’s more deep rooted than that.

ClassyCupcake2020 · 05/05/2022 21:13

Have a day off OP. Its a pizza.

musicviking1 · 05/05/2022 21:14

My kids went to Pizza Express with their school and made pizza's; very much like the pizza express parties. They had a great time.

orchardgirl4 · 05/05/2022 21:14

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads thanks for the info, good to know.

After all the responses, I think I'll go grab a healthy pizza now.... 😉

Totally agree, there are different flours for different flavours for different things

There are times when only a fried egg sandwich with white bread will do

At others I simply must have a cheese and salad sandwich on hovis wholemeal.

If its pizza I agree, a white flour base is the best flavour

I also much prefer wholemeal crackers with cheese, again for the flavour

We dont really have much bread in the house, I find it bloating but different dishes need different types of bread for the flavour

TenThousandSpoons · 05/05/2022 21:17

Glad you have seen the light OP. Enjoy your pizza 🍕

WorriedMillie · 05/05/2022 21:19

DD’s class went to ?pizza express to make their own pizzas. They had a great time and DD tried toppings she might never had otherwise.
She reported that they even had ‘mushy peas’ (turned out to be pesto)
We make them at home now, with a selection of toppings- cheese, pineapple (controversial), chicken, veggies

Nothing wrong with pizza as part of a balanced diet

mindutopia · 05/05/2022 21:20

DD’s school has pizza every Friday for lunch (margherita with basil drizzled with garlic oil, if you can believe it, I expect it sounds fancier than it is). I definitely prefer that to the other options, like a ham sandwich or jacket with beans and cheese. It’s a perfectly normal healthy lunch served with salad.

Much better than her previous school, which had a weekly option of jacket topped with spaghetti hoops. 🤢

Fully clicked on this thread to reminisce over school pizza 😳

bellsbuss · 05/05/2022 21:21

They are not being taught how to make crack

CowboyFromHell · 05/05/2022 21:22

Pizza being ‘normalised’?! I hope OP never finds herself in Italy.

StuckInTheMiddleOfNowhere · 05/05/2022 21:23

Most schools have it on their menu weekly or fortnightly.
Dsc school have it every Tuesday as the vegetarian option

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 05/05/2022 21:27

I remember going on a trip to the local dominos to make little pizzas to take back to school for our lunch once at primary school. It was a treat and it was ace.

Bloody hell hope no one tells you about Italy.

Oh god this is one of those comments that I’ll randomly think about whilst walking to work and start laughing madly in the street 😂

Tigofigo · 05/05/2022 21:30

Pizza is on my DC's school dinner menu every week from what I recall!

"It's pizza, not meth." Hos 😂

I've had a really crappy week and this has cheered me right up.

OfstedOffred · 05/05/2022 21:39

Be careful not to impose adult requirements on children's diets. Children need carbohydrates.

OfstedOffred · 05/05/2022 21:41

Amazed at the amount of people who see pizza as a healthy meal. No wonder British diets are so poor.

It can be, for children who need carbs.

Lots of people will make a homemade pizza with a relatively thin base, a fresh tomato sauce, cheese, mushrooms, peppers etc, green veg on the side. This is a healthy meal for a child.
