Warning the entire group (nearly 100 members) about a police speed trap near a school? I live in a small town that has a disproportionately high number of schools - 4 in total. Basically half the town is school buildings. There is a 30mph limit that goes to a 20mph as you go past the school. Someone has just alerted everyone that there’s a police trap there at the moment which I think is bloody irresponsible of them - if people are speeding past a school then they should be caught and hopefully they will take the option of a speed awareness course and be educated on how dangerous even slight speeding is if you hit a child. If they aren’t then they don’t need to be told about a speed trap! AIBU?

The police know people do this and use it to their advantage.

they usually stay in one spot long enough to get noticed (and will keep an eye on the local FB group) once it gets mentioned, they move on.

people will still see the message and drive carefully the next few times they drive through. The police can get round multiple sites in one shift. Same effect in each one. Win—win.

Well tbf, I would say to DH if I’d seen police out on a route he was going to do and I’d tell my friends if I saw them so it’s not that different. I don’t think those who speed regularly and a lot over the limit would be put off by getting caught anyway, sadly.

Threetulips · 05/05/2022 17:48

It is illegal!

Oooh interesting!

Why’s it just a mums WhatsApp, why are dads not invited? That’s weird and not ok.

Oh I thought it was Mum's WhatsApp group. Maybe it is just a parents/guardians WhatsApp group but all 100 parents happen to be mums

If you don’t speed regularly, why would you need to be warned about a speed camera? Not going to affect you if you’re not going over the limit.

SheSaysShush · 05/05/2022 18:38

I saw a police officer stood in my village with a speed gun last week. I would do that job for free!

Blaze1886 · 05/05/2022 18:47

If somebody is speeding why wouldn't you want them to get caught?

I never warn anybody, I hope they get caught

Carpy88999 · 05/05/2022 19:03

Threetulips · 05/05/2022 17:48

It is illegal!

It's illegal to flash people to let them know. The police have to let people know where the cameras are beforehand. Our local paper regularly reports where they will be!

LILLlTH · 05/05/2022 19:14

Akods · 05/05/2022 16:43

I would rather they got caught speeding rather than slowing down for one day and speeding every other day!

EXACTLY. Otherwise you're just helping them evade detection and get away with it when nobody's watching. Yanbu, at all.

Wheelz46 · 05/05/2022 19:33

Agree or not, by giving the heads up, they could have potentially prevented someone from being run over.

Permanent speed cameras should be made a legal requirement around schools!

Onwards22 · 05/05/2022 19:33

You've rather they got caught speeding and risk hitting a child?

Wow.

Lol.
What a ridiculous reply.

Obviously it is better to be caught speeding and get a fine which is more of a deterrent than the risk of hitting a child, as if that was the case no one would ever speed.

Momicrone · 05/05/2022 17:46

Yes how about not driving like a duck in the first place, especially near schools

Driving like a duck

Akods · 05/05/2022 16:43

I would rather they got caught speeding rather than slowing down for one day and speeding every other day!

But what if they’d hit a child during that one time speeding?

Wouldn’t you rather they just didn’t speed, and in the future, know it’s a chosen spot for speed traps?

LILLlTH · 05/05/2022 21:11

Wouldn’t you rather they just didn’t speed, and in the future, know it’s a chosen spot for speed traps?

Except, they're not going to stop speeding, hence why they deserve to be caught and punished. It's not like they hear a speed trap is set up, so they never do it again- they do it as soon as the coast is clear.

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 05/05/2022 21:57

Momicrone · 05/05/2022 18:17

Wisteria, can you not start a dad's whats app group if you feel so strongly and sweary about it

No because I believe all children should be included and not segregated based on if they have a mother or not. But you do you.

shameful. Beyond shameful.

🤮🥳

LauraNicolaides · 05/05/2022 21:58

LightningAndRainbows · 05/05/2022 18:25

Oooh interesting!

Except it really is not illegal!

Lauraa7 · 05/05/2022 22:09

My local paper post the locations where the cameras will be. By sharing the location ahead of time, the speed of more people is reduced in the area, rather then just the ones receiving the fine

Feckingfeck · 05/05/2022 22:19

@worraliberty

👏

The logic....

Just wow 🤦‍♀️

If the aim is to slow more people down, why give the specific location of the cameras? “There will be speed traps in this town this week” would surely slow more people down than “there will be a speed trap on the junction of Acacia Avenue and Main Road (but the rest of your route is clear, so go as fast as you like on that bit).”

SleepingFrog · 05/05/2022 22:31

We have 30mph average speed cameras on a road near where I live (our council loves an average speed zone) and the local village council posts on social media about how many are caught speeding each month- the figures are unbelievable especially when it's a clearly signposted average speed zone! It's essentially a permanent speed trap and yet people are caught repeatedly going quite a bit over 30... the mind boggles!

OP- YANBU but I do wonder if a heads up in a WhatsApp group can prevent complacency and maybe it would be enough to stop a percentage of those drivers speeding through in the future as it reminds them of the speed limit. I also agree though that some people need tough love and nothing like a speed trap to ruin your day and shock you back to driving more carefully 🤣

PolynesianParadise · 05/05/2022 22:42

Wouldn't it be amazing if the whole area was banned for cars and the children had to walk or cycle instead? Amazing.

Ottersmith · 05/05/2022 22:44

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 05/05/2022 18:10

God forbid women should form groups without men. Hateful witches. I tell you what why don't the men make a mixed group if they want instead of trying to stop women from congregating.

toomuchlaundry · 05/05/2022 22:48

Surely a WhatsApp group linked to a school should be a parents group.

AlizeeEasy · 05/05/2022 22:52

I took a refresher driving lesson when I got back into driving and I was really amused that my driving instructor was pointing out where all the speeding cameras were, instead of, ya know, telling me not to speed. Luckily I’m a stickler for the rules so I don’t plan on ever speeding anyway
