Did my headteacher sabotage my job interview?

Mahanii · 04/05/2022 22:06

This morning at 10.30 an upcoming job interview was confirmed by email. At 3 it was cancelled. I work in education so references are generally asked for before interviews.
WIBU to suspect my head of somehow sabotaging my interview?

More likely they only had 2 applicants and the other withdrew

HairyBum · 04/05/2022 22:09

Ask the leadership of the school doing the interviewing

Cherryana · 04/05/2022 22:09

They probably didn’t.

Most schools are unorganised and maybe they had a lot of cover and had to cancel the interview.

Or someone from the panel got covid.

Or the person who was leaving decided they didn’t want to leave.

All sorts can happen that are not necessarily nefarious.

Sucks for you not knowing though.

Mahanii · 04/05/2022 22:13

The person who was leaving changing their mind is the other option that makes sense.
I don't trust my head, she wasn't happy when I told her I needed to earn more and was therefore looking around.

Contact the school to ask them for feedback on your application. It could be that they have an internal reason to cancel interviews eg they can't afford a new member of staff so they have found a way to manage without appointing. I doubt that your Head would sabotage you, don't jump to conclusions.

StoneofDestiny · 04/05/2022 22:22

References are generally read after interview.

Mahanii · 04/05/2022 22:24

In schools references are sought before interview. Whether they're read or not I don't know!

OP posts:
HandScreen · 04/05/2022 22:26

Just bloody ask why it was cancelled, have some initiative!

BobblyBlueJumper · 04/05/2022 22:26

It does happen, I know of a principal who phoned a school and asked them to withdraw an offer.

But without more info can't really say whether it's likely in this instance.

Mahanii · 04/05/2022 22:28

I have asked, I haven't heard back yet.

HamCob · 04/05/2022 22:43

Unlikely as I think you can request to see references now?
We cancelled interviews today that were arranged for tomorrow as there were only 2 candidates and one was offered a job today so withdrew. Post will now been readvertised.

JanetandJohn500 · 04/05/2022 22:50

Are you concerned that your HT would have reason to sabotage it?
If you are concerned, it's not the reference you have to worry about, it's the off-the-record phone conversation.

Noname99 · 04/05/2022 22:52

You have the right to see the reference
Ask to see it

Watapalava · 04/05/2022 22:53

I work in education

youd be surprised how many off the record calls we get

usually from head who don’t want to see good staff go

it’s disgusting really

Mahanii · 04/05/2022 22:54

I bet it's a perfectly innocent reason. I hope you hear soon.

Cauliflowersqueeze · 04/05/2022 23:22

I’ve known this happen multiple times by a couple of unscrupulous heads.

Not always.

Happymum12345 · 04/05/2022 23:28

I know a head who refused to give a good reference so the teacher couldn’t leave. She did eventually.

Which is exactly why there's a preliminary phone call to the Head these days. You can't submit an SAR on an unrecorded verbal discussion.

Headteacher415 · 05/05/2022 06:07

There are many, many reasons why this happens, some legitimate and some not.

Primary schools will have finalised budgets over the last couple of weeks and received their pupil numbers, so could have realised they don't need another member of staff; or can't afford your payscale.

I've known schools to interview on different days and they could have filled the post with a strong/preferred candidate yesterday or someone the agency sent along.

Their favourite supply teacher, or student teacher, could have been in the frame and decided yesterday that he or she wanted it. My first NQT job was in the school I was in teaching practice in, and they pulled the ad when I applied because they wanted me to stay.

People withdraw resignations - planned move out of the area with partner's job falls through, for example.

Recruitment is very difficult right now, and some schools are advertising when staff are applying elsewhere, to get ahead of the game. Maybe the person potentially leaving didn't get the job they went for.

Possibly you were always the "wild card" candidate in a strong field and others pulled out because they got jobs in the last few days (common for a field of 5 candidates to dwindle down to 1 or 2 at this time of year), in which case they'll readvertise.

I've rarely known another HT give a bad reference to keep someone. Possibly occasionally a bland reference which doesn't "sell" them. Unless there is history of this or of difficult relationships with your HT, it wouldn't be my first conclusion.

Ask for feedback, and whether you should reapply if it's readvertised.

I know a head who deliberately lied that the music teacher was shit to anyone asking for a reference. He didn't want to lose him. Happened several times and then the music teacher found out. It all kicked off Shock

toomuchlaundry · 05/05/2022 07:32

Our school Trust have started to request references after interview

toomuchlaundry · 05/05/2022 07:33

Education also seems to be one of the only places that ask for detailed references, many businesses just provide confirmation of your employment dates
