To really struggle changing DS’s nappy

Holl90 · 04/05/2022 13:30

I feel like a complete failure, my DS is so so strong and he won’t lie down for his nappy to be changed. I put him on my knee and did it that way but he is so strong I really struggle to hold him still, it’s so hard sometimes it takes me a good 5 minutes to recover from it. I know this is AIBU but any mums had this challenge? Any resolutions? Not long until I can toilet train him I suppose. I get really frustrated and hate it if he does a poo if we are our because of how resistant he is and it looks like I can’t manage.

My 1 year old won’t like still for a nappy change so I have her lying in front of me, sideways on. I put my left leg over her to pin her down and change her nappy with my right side. It sounds bad but she giggles about it and starts playing with my knees (if I’m wearing holey jeans). She is very strong in the legs so by doing this she can’t use them to twist.

This ^ as a few other people have said. We used to always do this to keep them (gently) pinned down.

You can rip the sides of pull-ups to take them off - you don't have to pull them down like pants, so trousers/shoes can stay on (don't ask me how long it took me to realise this 😳).

Yes but how do you get the new one on without taking everything else off?

MassiveSalad22 · 04/05/2022 20:02

@AliasGrape I need to know too, I’m feeling really dumb here 😄 what the hell?

HappyDays40 · 04/05/2022 20:14

I used to lay my son on he floor then use my legs one on each of his shoulders to pin him to the floor. God I don't miss those days now he is almost six.
Could you ask him to " help" lie him down and give him a wipe, ask him to wipe once then mummy do it, then his turn?

Oh yeah....I hadn't really thought that through, had I? 😳 In my defence, my 'baby' is 15 now so it's been a while since I've changed a pull-up!

Haha, I empathize!

I've 2-year old twins who sometimes resist nappy changes. When I'm struggling with one twin, the other is "helpfully" squeezing out the tube of nappy cream /sticking their hands in to help wipe away the poo / pulling my hair-clip out of my hair / trying to climb up me etc! I'm sweating by the end of it! Grin

I got a special "nappy change blanket" in bright yellow (their favorite colour) and a yellow cushion. Now they're mostly happy to lie on the blanket on the floor for nappy change.

Don't worry OP, you're doing fine!

I had this with DD1. I ended up giving her a toy that i only allowed her to have during changing time. Only thing that worked!

You've had some good suggestions. The standing up one is probably a good shout (would never have worked for me with 2 girls unfortunately!)

bigkicks · 08/05/2022 18:00

My DS is a lot older but has severe autism and isn't continent. He won't lie down for a nappy change, my technique is to do it standing up with him holding onto the side of the bathtub, he's still not a fan but doesn't fight it too much. You get the hang of it after a while.

Kangaruby · 08/05/2022 18:06

I had to change standing from about a year, used vests to keep nappy on as I could never get them that secure

BiscuitLover3678 · 08/05/2022 18:06

Make it fun! Phone? Hold a toy? Sing a song?
its a great way to bond and it won’t be forever.

definitely do it standing up! Get the pull ups so rip down the side. You can do it for poos just have wipes ready.

Collardgreens · 08/05/2022 18:15

With the pull up, when it was a poo, I started by shoving wet wipes down the back of the nappy. That meant, when I pulled the sides apart, all the mess had been coaxed into the nappy, and there was a separation between poo and bum. Then: final wipe.

I always did the change with them standing up, but yes, you do have to take off shoes and trousers.

ashitghost · 08/05/2022 18:28

If you think people are judging you then I’m guessing it’s not because you look like you can’t control him, but because you are changing his shitty nappy in public. Why are you not taking him to a baby changing facility?

Notanotherwindow · 08/05/2022 19:05

Our nappy routine for a while was literally

  1. Remove nappy.
  2. Pin down with leg across his chest.
  3. Wipe off excess poo
  4. Bag up shitty nappy
  5. Grab ankle of escaping toddler and drag back to changing mat.
  6. Attempt to pin down while wiping properly.
  7. Powder.
  8. Open new nappy.
  9. Drag back to mat by the ankle again
10. Get nappy under him. 11. Get booted in face by indignant howling toddler. 12. Shout at him to keep bloody still while trying to pin him down. 13. Ask sister to sit on him and hold him still. 14. Get kicked in the face again 15. FINALLY get clean nappy on. 16. Look at his discarded trousers, briefly consider putting them back on.and think 'fuck that' 17. Pour a wine.
PolynesianParadise · 08/05/2022 19:07

Give him a toy to hold lying down.

And start to potty train 😎

Penguinevere · 08/05/2022 19:10

I give mine a book for happy changes and she looks like someone reading while on the toilet lol.

Penguinevere · 08/05/2022 19:10

Nappy changes even.

Hadalifeonce · 08/05/2022 19:14

I used to pin DD down with my forearm across his chest, holding his left arm and learned to take off the old nappy, clean him, and put on the clean one PDQ.

Can you change standing up?

It is what I used to do and it worked well.
