This sounds like bullshit but I promise it’s not.

I ordered some fancy, hand painted furniture a few months ago. The delivery date was booked in for yesterday, to coincide with our building work being at a stage that could accommodate a furniture delivery (eg room had actually been built, floor down (albeit covered to protect it), base coats of paint done.

Anyway furniture company came to deliver, as agreed. I receive a call during a meeting from the man saying “we are not delivering the furniture as the room is not finished”. I asked him to explain. He was very rude and explained there were people painting the ceiling and a floor cover on and he just wasn’t going to deliver. I said I would call the head builder as they knew they were coming and would vacate, but that wasn’t the issue, the issue was they didn’t want to put their furniture in a room where ceilings were being painted/the floor was covered/it’s not finished. He said he would come back next week or later when it’s fully finished.

Is this…is this ok?! Surely this isn’t ok? I was in a meeting and was shocked so agreed but it’s been 24 hours and now I’m raging. It’s infantilising and potentially sexist to boot - it’s my fucking furniture! I paid a lot of money for it and surely it’s my bloody decision if I put a sheet over it to protect it or let it get ruined?!

What do I do?!?

In this unlikely scenario he wasn't really infantilising you was he? He was trying to be helpful. But when you protested he was an idiot to not just put your furniture in the room under the ceiling that's about to be painted.

Neverreturntoathread · 04/05/2022 08:59

Call the furniture company and say you’ve paid for an item but the courier is refusing to let you have it.

Seems very strange.

PurassicJark · 04/05/2022 09:05

Maybe some kind of odd company policy? I mean they don't know that you won't come back shouting at them that paint got on your new furniture and it's their fault for delivering it. I've heard more stupid things being shouted at companies so they took their chances and decided to not deliver and potentially have to fork out twice on expensive furniture.

I get your point, but having worked in these kind of departments and been yelled at by customers over honestly stupid things, I get theirs too.

If it's hand painted and expensive I can understand why the vendor wouldn't want to leave them in a room which is still being painted. The risk of them getting ruined is not low and then the vendor has the risk of being chased for refunds or replacements or repairs (possibly expensive / time consuming) which aren't his fault.

They said they'd deliver next week, surely you can wait a few more days? I imagine you don't want the furniture ruined either!

Quartz2208 · 04/05/2022 09:17

If it is expensive hand made and hand painted furniture that has taken them a long time to complete to a high standard - cant you see why they may not want it to go into a room where it could be finished

In a sense you have bought the equilvalent of a piece of art and the artist doesnt want it to be compromised

rainyskylight · 04/05/2022 09:28

If the furniture was delivered and was damaged by the builders and paint flecks when you were out then you might complain that the furniture was clearly delivered to hi

rainyskylight · 04/05/2022 09:29

So weird my message only half posted.

basically they wouldn’t want to get in a dispute between you and the builders, and you probably came across pretty badly over the phone which would have raised alarm bells.

WeOnlyTalkAboutBruno · 04/05/2022 09:30

But..it’s her furniture! She has (presumably) paid for if she wants to chop it up into little pieces and set it on fire she can do so!

iheartmybeachhut · 04/05/2022 09:32

Outrage really? Sounds sensible to to me to wait until the room is finished being painted.

WeOnlyTalkAboutBruno · 04/05/2022 09:34

It’s not the point though! You can’t just dictate when someone’s furniture can be delivered because you feel it would be better at another time!

tootiredtoocare · 04/05/2022 09:42

Could they do a letter you can sign to say you'll take responsibility for any damage and won't seek a refund? However, when I was getting (completely ordinary) furniture delivered, the invoices I signed included a waiver that said I'd checked the furniture before the delivery people had left and there was no damage. It's pretty much industry standard, I would have thought. Are they policing what you do with your own furniture?

Comfortablynumbertwo · 04/05/2022 09:56

Why the rush to be offended? Outrage, infantilism and sexism seem one heck of a reach. Surely they’re doing you a favour keeping the furniture until you’re actually ready for it.

LightningAndRainbows · 04/05/2022 10:06

This isn't like mass produced furniture though this is an art form. It's pretty disrespectful of you to expect it to be placed where it might be damaged.

Rosehugger · 04/05/2022 10:10

It's furniture, not a puppy. I don't care if it was made by elves by moonlight, it should have been delivered. YANBU.

WeOnlyTalkAboutBruno · 04/05/2022 10:15

I feel like I’m losing my mind here

She could but thats pretty disrespectful

I agree. WTF the furniture should have been delivered. Maybe it was ill-advised to have it delivered to a room being painted but it's her furniture to do what she wants with.

Cocobeau · 04/05/2022 10:35

Why would you want your very expensive, hand finished furniture in a room still being decorated?
If the flooring isn't done then someone at some point is going to have to move that furniture around - possibly not giving two shits about it. Perhaps the vendor has had issues in the past where people try to claim items were damaged after delivery and you weren't there to check it over for yourself.

roosnunlilei · 04/05/2022 10:38

It's not their business to decide what you do with your furniture, even if they, like other posters, think it isn't the best option.

burnoutbabe · 04/05/2022 10:41

yes that is pretty rubbish they won't deliver. i assume they would not do that to a male but who knows!

Feelingveryranty · 04/05/2022 10:41

But..it’s her furniture! She has (presumably) paid for if she wants to chop it up into little pieces and set it on fire she can do so!

this! It’s infantilising to remove the decision from me about my own belongings!!!!

I would have covered the furniture and the floor IS finished it’s covered with protective stuff and the builders would move the furniture when it’s coming off. That’s between me and the builders.

this slot was booked a while ago - of course I thought the room would be finished by now but there were this inevitable delays with building works and here we are. It’s not the fact it will be delivered later; it’s someone TELLING me what I can do with my OWN possessions!!!!

it is done…

Me too! Is this an alternate fucking universe where women simply aren't trusted to make decisions about their OWN POSSESSIONS!!

knittingaddict · 04/05/2022 10:49

Painted furniture in a room being painted? He was proably worried that the furniture would get damaged and you would claim that it was damaged pre delivery. I can see his point.
