This sounds like bullshit but I promise it’s not.

I ordered some fancy, hand painted furniture a few months ago. The delivery date was booked in for yesterday, to coincide with our building work being at a stage that could accommodate a furniture delivery (eg room had actually been built, floor down (albeit covered to protect it), base coats of paint done.

Anyway furniture company came to deliver, as agreed. I receive a call during a meeting from the man saying “we are not delivering the furniture as the room is not finished”. I asked him to explain. He was very rude and explained there were people painting the ceiling and a floor cover on and he just wasn’t going to deliver. I said I would call the head builder as they knew they were coming and would vacate, but that wasn’t the issue, the issue was they didn’t want to put their furniture in a room where ceilings were being painted/the floor was covered/it’s not finished. He said he would come back next week or later when it’s fully finished.

Is this…is this ok?! Surely this isn’t ok? I was in a meeting and was shocked so agreed but it’s been 24 hours and now I’m raging. It’s infantilising and potentially sexist to boot - it’s my fucking furniture! I paid a lot of money for it and surely it’s my bloody decision if I put a sheet over it to protect it or let it get ruined?!

What do I do?!?

YANBU and the replies to this thread are making me feel like I've fallen down a rabbit hole.

but it was his entire tone of voice and attitude that made me feel like a “silly little woman” and I can’t imagine hiM having spoken to my husband in this way

Nah that's on you if you feel like a silly little woman. The man never said that. He was talkin about furniture and a floor. 🙄

Jesus Christ. I think the op could tell the tone in which things were said to her.
This comment is ridiculous.

i do think MN has a bias about people buying expensive things and I really do wish I had lied and said it was something from IKEA where I had paid for assembly or whatever

But that would have changed the context. The price and bespoke nature actually make his behavious (if not tone) quite reasonable.

I would really like to see where I have been aggressive, and of course I am “making a massive deal” because I am upset. For you it’s minor, for me I’m 38 weeks pregnant and want my nursery finished and the furniture in there before the baby comes. It’s not my fault there have been huge delays on this project.

Honestly if you can't tell then me writing down all the places you've been OTT in this thread wouldn't be kind. Of course it's understandable you feel that way but the only reason to brave AIBU is to get honest answers when you might not be objective.

Given how MN tends to bias towards hyperbole and telling posters to rip off stranger's faces for percieved insults (you haven't even been told to report him to 101) I think you can be sure that it objectively isn't a big deal, even if he was rude. Now you know, perhaps better to step away from this thread, forget about the incident and do something you enjoy?

Really? I overreact, come accross poorly or make mistakes all the time, let alone when managing a building project while very pregnant. I think it's very possible he didn't mean to be rude.

Furniture was delivered today. 3 items painted the wrong colour and 1 item missing. Builder said they were extremely rude to them in passing.

If it's hand painted and expensive I can understand why the vendor wouldn't want to leave them in a room which is still being painted

It's furniture, not a puppy. I don't care if it was made by elves by moonlight, it should have been delivered. YANBU.

Ooooh. I want furniture made by elves by moonlight.
<misses point of thread>

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 11/05/2022 20:19

So they haven't even provided the thing you ordered correctly? Are you going to ask for a refund?

After having to wait an extra week. What a nightmare company!

Cherms · 11/05/2022 20:32

And at least if they'd delivered them last week you might have had them back this week repainted in the right colour!

PrivateHall · 11/05/2022 20:37

This company has been a disgrace from start to finish! I hope you are reviewing them on social media. What have they said they will do to resolve the situation?

jenny5000 · 11/05/2022 21:15

I'm sorry OP. What a disappointment and no doubt more work for you!
