Inflation/cost of living

The BOE thought it was a blip & didn't think it would peak at the level we are now at. We know that energy bills are going up in Oct but i've read they are going to rise again next year or at least not reduce. Food & other costs are increasing and normally when costs of goods go up they don't normally go back down. Does that mean we are stuck with these high prices & lower standard of living?

Yes probably so. I know more about food than about energy and I can’t see food costs going back down much. I’ve planted some veg at home to hedge against costs a little.

KangarooKenny · 04/05/2022 07:36

Yep.

PurassicJark · 04/05/2022 07:37

Probably not no. Wages won't rise either, certainly not for public sector staff. Think carefully about who you vote for on Thursday.

Bighairydogs · 04/05/2022 07:38

Probably. Look at petrol & diesel - that’s not gone down. I remember in the fuel crisis last year seeing somewhere that was selling diesel at 160p and thinking ‘NO-ONE will pay that!’ - and here we are, paying 180p , 6 months later. What else can we do?! It’s really worrying. If people will pay it (because they have to), then they’ll keep charging it.
See also - dogs! Went up massively in price in lockdown, haven’t gone down yet - people will now pay £4000 for a puppy which would have been unthinkable 3 years ago. It’s never coming down again if people will pay it.

wages are rising though in some industries though aren't they. There are skills shortages & lots of vacancies in certain areas.

I remember when 20% vat was a temporary measure.

I suppose so, but it's not like they are jobs anyone can get are they? In my industry it would be people who can code that are needed. Not everyone can code, hence why they get paid more. Its not like they are increasing wages for nurses, carers, teachers, police officers etc is it?

It is a truly terrible situation. We were just discussing at breakfast this morning whether we would have to agree on which artisan bread to have to make our morning toast, rather than having a different sort each.

CheeseBoard2022 · 04/05/2022 07:52

Yep.

I never said everyone was going to see increases but there are normal jobs seeing increases eg hgv, sales. Although I did think new teachers were seeing an increase.

You are most welcome. At the moment I am favouring a seeded sourdough for my morning toast.

Dunno if they are really, and the hgv drivers don't seem happy about the increase they got but they were getting underpaid for decades anyway. It's a shit time overall for many and it's going to get worse. House prices have risen drastically in many areas, some which weren't exactly cheap to begin with. There are several areas in britain where the locals will never own a home unless they win the lottery.

Topgub · 04/05/2022 08:09

No, I don't think prices will reduce, why would they?

Companies know we will pay them and govts will let them away with making obscene profits.

I'm hoping labour shortages will force an increase in wages but I think that would just push prices up more

I think I read salaries have increased by just over 5% which obviously still under inflation. And yes we have a huge issue that wages have stagnated for years & assets have increased. I'm a Londoner so whilst I have a home I can't afford what I would really like.

Yes it's under by quite a bit, if it increased at all for people. It's not like it increased for everyone. I imagine there's many people right now on this forum who would die laughing at your comment that wages have increased by 5%. Probably did for the mps, but not us commoners. 😄

creekycr · 04/05/2022 08:36

It's not like it increased for everyone

I haven't claimed it has though? It's an average...

I'm not sure what your point is though. Some have increased, big deal. It's not like it was 50% to be online with inflation of energy bills. And that's just energy bills, probably looking at 500% for some areas to be able to buy a house or afford fuel these days, a common joke.

NHS I think are getting up to 3%? I wonder how many carers will get 3%. It's still pathetic though, 3% will cover almost nothing. It's a slap in the face for those workers who twatface boris stood clapping for two years ago.

So yeah not sure what your point is really. It seems a trivial argument that only an mp would have to be honest. 'I know energy bills, food bills, fuel bills etc have gone up drastically, but we is paying you 3% more?!'. It's a crap answer for a shit situation.

Grantanow · 04/05/2022 09:01

The cost of living will continue to rise and Johnson and the Tories will do nothing to help. Sunak said it would be 'silly' to do so. The Bank of England will have to raise interest rates to bring about recession. Levelling up is a bad joke. Partygate is beyond a joke. Johnson on breakfast TV thought it fine that an elderly pensioner unable to afford heating should spend her days on the buses. He has to go. Vote to ensure the Tories lose at the local elections.

Indoctro · 04/05/2022 09:02

Nothing will reduce in price. It will keep creeping up.

creekycr · 04/05/2022 09:04

I think you have completely misunderstood my posts. I haven't said that wages are good or anywhere close to where they need to be. I simply made the point that there are labour shortages in some areas & some jobs have had wage increases which has context when you are talking about inflation.

OP posts:

But we can't all work in those areas... 😂I don't see how that's a solution.

You are sounding more and more like an mp.

creekycr · 04/05/2022 09:09

I'm not sure what you are not understanding, the context was in relation to inflation. Where did I say wage increases were a solution?
