To buy my 15 year old a vape

I discovered nearly a year ago that my 15 year old ds was vaping. I told him how disappointed I was and hoped that he would listen.Anyway over the last year we have had lots of discussions about it and I’ve tried to persuade him not to and even as gone as far as punishing him when I’ve found vapes in his bedroom. He has recently told me he wants to stop but is addicted to the nicotine. He has asked me for help. He has suggested that I buy him a lower nicotine vape and let him have it daily for a short time. I know little about e- cigarettes and I’m not sure the right way to go about this. He says he currently vapes the highest strength. Apparently half his year do at school in the toilets. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Why do you need to buy him a vape? Surely he needs to reduce the strength of the liquid he's using? Sounds like he's trying to con you into buying a new vape!

SouthOfFrance · 03/05/2022 21:07

Why can't he buy a lower nicotine vape himself?

Teamsaction · 03/05/2022 21:08

By him nicotine gum or patches instead both safer than vaping.

NrlySp · 03/05/2022 21:09

gum or patches. Patches for school. Hypnosis can also be helpful.

TabithaTittlemouse · 03/05/2022 21:10

It’s no different to buying him cigarettes. I couldn’t.

Hellocatshome · 03/05/2022 21:12

Most pharmacies and GPs have a lot of information/specialists re quitting smoking (i know its not exactly the same but its still an addiction to nicotine at the end of the day) take him to a professional get professional help.

Sh05 · 03/05/2022 21:12

No way should you buy it for him.
It's an addiction just like smoking and in 10 years time will come with a health warning as cigarettes do. Gum or patches are the way to go

Dixiechickonhols · 03/05/2022 21:12

I wouldn’t. I’d get him to refer himself to nhs stop smoking service.

Sh05 · 03/05/2022 21:13

Vaping is still harming his lungs op, he needs help

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/05/2022 21:15

Leaving aside for a moment the issue of him vaping at 15, his request doesn't make much sense

I've always mixed my own, but ready mixed vape "juice" is sold in different nicotine strengths and there's not usually a price difference between them - so 3mg will cost the same as 18mg or whatever

Auntieobem · 03/05/2022 21:16

Vaping is now one method used by some nhs stop smoking services, I doubt that they would have much advice for him. Nicotine is no worse for him than caffeine and vaping is certainly much much safer than smoking.

Agree with previous posters though - it's really straightforward for him to decrease the strength of the liquid he's using.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 03/05/2022 21:19

The anti smoking campaigns were a waste of time.
Vaping was a means to ending smoking and worked brilliantly for so many, unfortunately every second teenager is getting hooked on nicotine or just inhaling unnecessary products into their body.
The marketing has worked well.

Eightiesfan · 03/05/2022 21:30

No, just no. He certainly knows how to press your buttons.

generalh · 03/05/2022 21:32

You know they are probably sharing the vapes in school, or leaving them in toilet cisterns for others to use. They also get the younger ones to carry them for them. Yuck!

EmeraldShamrock1 · 03/05/2022 21:37

Imo they're the new gate way to drugs, just like cigarettes.

Most people who took drugs will tell you weed was the start, though cigarettes often come before weed, if not always.

There is loads of thc vape oils flooding the market, thc disposal vape pens, it is only a matter of time before teenagers trade oils for thc oils.

Whatthefuck3456 · 03/05/2022 21:43

wow! Just wow! Would you buy him cigarettes or heroin if he asked you to

iggybop · 03/05/2022 21:43

No! It's illegal, dangerous and bloody irresponsible

Beautiful3 · 03/05/2022 21:50

No way! Why would you help him get cancer? Say no.

TonyBlairsLover · 03/05/2022 21:51

Get him professional help not more cancer sticks. You’re the parent not the friend

Eucalyptusbee · 03/05/2022 21:52

Depressing

MrsTxx · 03/05/2022 21:55

I started smoking cigarettes at his age. Vaping wasn’t a thing then. I’m now on a vape and have been for four years, I feel like I’m just pacifying a dirty habit and now lowering the amount of nicotine until i can throw it out. I’ve tried cold turkey but the side affects are awful. Please don’t buy him a vape especially a disposable ‘fun’ one. Get him some gum and patches, he doesn’t need an addiction that will follow him to adulthood.

Testina · 03/05/2022 22:05

If he can afford to buy the higher strength stuff, why would you need to buy him the lower strength? He’s seen you coming!

It’s because the kids buy all the cheap colourful disposable ones, which are also the highest in nicotine. They are 20 mg, but they’re nic salts not liquid, still very high nicotine (1 cigarette is 12 mg on average). In one disposable vape there is the equivalent of 46.25 cigarettes.

Reusable vapes take liquid that can be low in nicotine, they are much cheaper to run but also cost more money up front. This same reason why the government banned smaller packets of tobacco being sold- because it puts kids off starting because they have to fork out £15+ instead of £2.99.

I wouldn’t be buying him one though. He’d be set for the next few years then. Don’t believe he’s interested in quitting. Get him some nicotine patches and take away his phone until he stops. He’s 15 and your his parent!

I speak as someone who’s recently become addicted to vaping in my early 20s. Everyone my age has started vaping, but I notice it has tricked down to teenagers too- as it always does!

Rno3gfr · 03/05/2022 22:56

There is no link between vaping and cancer. It doesn’t have the same carcinogens as a cigarette.
