To not find this relentless sexual harassment funny in the slightest

I have a feeling I'm going to get a roasting for this but I'm feeling pissed off to be quite honest.

Im in a holiday at the moment in a hot country, Europe, and went all inclusive as it saves money in the long run.

For context I am 27, married, gay as the day is long. I've never flirted in my actual life.

So thing is every time I go to the bar to ask for a f-ing glass of water I have to subject myself to at least 5 minutes of sexual harassment. 'Hello sexy, how are you'. 'Why just water, don't you want a sex on the beach?'. Constant jibes, all of them about my body. Countless jokes about getting me drunk (again, I wanted WATER given it's 28 degrees outside).

I'm just so cranky, my head is pounding from dehydration but I have trauma in my past and I literally can't cope with this. How does everyone else manage it, or even think it's funny? Is it just me?

Record it on your phone and when you leave a Google review upload the video. Hit them where it hurts. Even if it stops only a small number of people visiting their establishment

Jaxhog · 04/05/2022 14:54

The worst places I've been harassed, in order, are Morocco, Tunisia, and Italy. I didn't think Turkey was as bad.

@Indicatrice still waiting for you to apologies for implying I was islamophobic when you incorrectly misquoted me using someone else's words.

Sorry @wiiinoforever , still trying to get to grips with the new format, I see Palmfronds quoted you and made that comment.

No, that was me who said that, and I did so with the intention of diverting the speculation that the OP was referring to a Muslim country, as the two countries in Europe that I was referring to are Kosovo and Bosnia Herzegovina, both of which are largely landlocked and do an unlikely destination for a bucket and spade holiday.
And “Moslem” might be offensive to you, but it’s not a pejorative, and in my case it was a typo or possible autocorrect.
And for the record, Cyprus is in Asia.
Sorry to derail OP.

To add to this I actually do holiday in Bosnia quite a bit as I’ve got family friends who are Bosnian. All the men there are respectful and kind. They’re also Muslim. The Quran preaches respect for women. It’s culture not religion that is the problem.

Hey netters, just wanted to let you all know I’ve been a right rude you know what to the culprits today and I think it’s working slowly but surely! They’re still trying it on but I’m just ignoring them and refusing to look them in the eye. Really goes against my nature to be rude to service staff but in this case they’re the ones in the wrong so I’m sticking to my guns.

They're not just service staff though are they?

They're aggressors who happen to be service staff. They deserve whatever they get.

Marvellousmadness · 05/05/2022 01:12

I am aware I’m being overly defensive but just wanted to make it entirely clear that I wasn’t giving any signals that would suggest I want this kind of attention, hence the being a married lesbian. Not that it makes a difference in reality.

Update: I’ve been avoiding this absolute creep all day so he comes up to me while I’m hanging out on my sun lounger with my friend and tries to start a conversation. Vom. Also he gave my friend his name on a bit of paper so she can mention him on tripadvisor 😂 big mistake my friend. How are men this delusional?

I've got a male friend who's on holiday in Turkey and he's just sent me some pretty disturbing messages:

"I did a good deed tonight and walked 2 english girls back to their hotel. They were getting way too much attention from the Turkish men and felt quite scared to go home alone or even in a taxi.

Poor girls. They only got here last night and all day they've had men trying it on. Even just walking down the street, cars will stop and the men will be telling them to get in. In the middle of the day. At night I think it's even worse.

The walk home was through a really dark area as well. They were so thankful."

Before he went I mentioned to him about how lecherous (to put it mildly) a lot of Turkish men are in the seaside resort areas. I'm glad I did, because he got the impression that these young women were in an uncomfortable situation, being harassed, and went over to talk to them.

Something terrible happened to a good friend of mine in a Turkish hotel once. By an actual member of staff. I won't go into any details, but let's just say there was a big cover up.

Please be careful out there 🙏

ihatethecold · 22/06/2022 07:41

I just couldn’t holiday in a place that would harass my teenage DD.
id love to visit Turkey but I’m not prepared to bat man off.
she gets Leary me in the uk but it’s manageable.

the worst she’s experienced was in NY 4 years ago.
we went as a family and she was 14.
the catcalling was just hideous.
she ended up crying on the sidewalk because she couldn’t cope with how obviously they viewed her as a piece of meat.
I was so cross. We couldn’t relax and admire the views at all.

Marlaah · 22/06/2022 08:23

Omfg you go on holiday for some relaxation and you get these creeps preying on guests.

Keep shutting him down, tell him off if he keeps asking you both out. Please write a review detailing your harassment with his name on Trip Advisor when you return. It may help to keep other guests safe in future. On your last day tell hotel management what’s been going on. I’d say to any woman who’s either by themselves or with another woman and getting harassed by staff to be cautious about complaining to management when you’ve got a few days left. Sometimes they don’t want the hassle and they’ll make your life a misery.

I had a horrible time a few years ago with harassment in a foreign hotel. It was frightening. Being spied on, mobbed, attempts to access the room at night, being followed, hissed at etc. I’d only checked the 1* star Trip Advisor reports previously and missed a couple of reviews of people describing similar types of harassment at the same hotel. One review was from a gay married couple who had two men burst into their room at night. They had constant pestering and were even contacted (whilst they were there) on Facebook by one of the harassers! These poor women were terrified.

Georgeskitchen · 22/06/2022 09:21

Unfortunately in some parts of the world this behaviour is deemed acceptable. This is why I refuse to visit these countries

Bobby5123 · 22/06/2022 12:21

Sorry to hear that Marlaah, that's despicable 😔

I once saw a pitch on dragon's den, a guy had designed a device that fits on the inside of a hotel room door, the door needs to be smashed through from the other side to open it. He was ridiculed by the dragons. Something like this would have probably prevented the assault on my friend.

These Turkish guys know they can sexually abuse women pretty much with impunity. Even if the woman is brave enough to be examined - no guarantee it will be by a male doctor - they will claim it was concensual 😡

Bobby5123 · 22/06/2022 12:25

Sorry, I meant no guarantee it will be by a female doctor
