So...

DS is 9, its the first year he has fasted every day and he is very pleased with himself.

We live in a predominantly white area with a very small muslim community. I am unsure what to do... should i send him to school tomorrow or ket him celebrate another day of Eid?

AIBU to send him to school on the second day of Eid?

Thanks in advance... and happy Eid to those who celebrate, and those who don't 😊

Give him the day off. It's a special day for your family. Schools allow days off for religious reasons so (assuming they are aware you are a Muslim family) they probably won't be expecting him in school.

KaraVanPark · 02/05/2022 21:20

why Dies it matter that live in a predominantly white area, eid is discussed and taught in schools up and down the country. Embrace your festival

Beck01 · 02/05/2022 21:23

I would keep him off. I was pleasantly surprised my DS school is closed tomorrow. Initial message was because of eid however, they later changed the statement to say inset day.

We no longer live local to the school but there is a strong muslim community in the older year groups. DS said last year there were hardly any children in.

Bobbybobbins · 02/05/2022 21:24

Keep him off! All our Muslim pupils will be off tomorrow. Eid Mubarak!

TheOccupier · 02/05/2022 21:31

I'm in a very multicultural area and here the state schools are closed tomorrow for Eid. But I think if you've celebrated today and DS' school is open, he shouldn't miss school tomorrow. You can still have a special evening.

Not relevant perhaps but is it really OK/normal for 9yos to fast? I thought it wasn't usual until adolescence.

medicmummm · 02/05/2022 21:31

Thanks everyone... pretty unanimous

The demographic of the area matters as I have nobody else I can ask, and the school aren't aware Eid is 3 days. DS often teaches the class about islam.

Are children also staying off the third day?

Eid Mubarak!

Womeninblack · 02/05/2022 21:34

Its not essential at his age but he insisted.

I think its a way for him to feel connected to his religion.

Eid Mubarak! Yes, give him the day off. He's 9. He can catch up.

In terms of having nobody else you can ask, from your username I infer you're a doctor. It might be worth joining some of the medical Facebook groups if you're not in them already - good to have a trusted source of advice in your pocket!

Whybot · 02/05/2022 21:44

If you keep him off please do inform the school tonight so teachers know how many kids in the class.

withacherryonthetop · 02/05/2022 21:48

Keep him off and celebrate

What about the third day of Eid? Confused

Eid mubarak! I'm expecting my Muslim students to stay off tomorrow. They will be tired and it's religious entitlement so most schools allow it as one of the authorised days off.

wordleaddict · 02/05/2022 21:56

My school sent a text to all. School happens as usual for all pupils tomorrow.

motherofchihuahuas · 02/05/2022 22:00

My dd goes to karate with a Little boy her age who
Is Muslim.
Can I get them a gift? And if so what should I get them?

soundsystem · 02/05/2022 22:06

Deffo keep him off! We're not Muslim but I know all the kids in DD's class who celebrate - almost half the class - will be off tomorrow.

If I lived in a country where boxing day was 'school as usual' my kid would be sick every year. Of course it can't be school as usual after Eid. School is important but lots of things in life are more important

I would so like it if we made Eid and Divali public holidays. Last time the subject of instituting a new public holiday came up, Westminister were pushing for a Trafalgar Day in October (October, ffs) before dropping it completely.
(I'm an atheist, btw, but love Christmas.)

I see - thanks!

Regarding day 3, here (multicultural inner city), the state schools were closed today for the Bank Holiday, will be closed tomorrow as an "Occasional Day" for Eid, and everyone's back to school on Wednesday.

Aichek · 02/05/2022 22:25

Aid Mabrouk! Keep him off.

On the third day- I'm in a Muslim country and we only get Monday and Tuesday as public holidays here- back to work on Wednesday. So maybe that depends on your usual customs at home?

Maybebabyno2 · 02/05/2022 22:26

We always had kids fasting during Eid at school, in primary, so if thats the issue I'm sure he will be fine going in and I would hope he would be supported by his teachers/classmates.

If you are doing extra celebrations, keep him off! I guess it's like boxing day, all families do it differently.

I remember reading some really awful comments on a post on FB asking if we should have a public holiday for Eid.

Imagine being such a bigot you'd rather do yourself out of a bank holiday than let other people celebrate what they want to while you have the day off work!

MummyTo2GorgeousMunchkins · 02/05/2022 22:36

Eid Mubarak. I work in a school office managing the attendance records. Most of our Muslim pupils take time off for Eid and it is authorised by the school (R code). I would keep your son off and enjoy your celebrations.

I would have thought because he will be the only one off in his school, as opposed to some areas where there will only be one or two children in school from each class.
