Argument over Billy Bear Ham

DC had friends over for play date, I provided lunch (baguettes, cucumber, cheese and billy bear ham, apple and yoghurt for pudding)

Yes it's processed and gimmicky, we are all vegetarian in this house apart from my 3 year old, so it was the only meat we had and they asked for ham in their baguettes.

Friend fuming I fed her son Billy bear ham, very dramatic about it, don't you know what's in that? I'm not one for processed food particularly, but my 3yo loves the stuff and has an otherwise balanced vegetarian diet so what's the issue, in my opinion. AIBU?

Most people do that to an extent surely. Their children are expected to adopt the parents or family normal to a certain extent in terms of what they're offered at least.

Sorry, I was meant to quote the poster who said they respected op for not enforcing her dietary choices onto her children.

I agree - all parents impose their standards / values / beliefs upon their children to a certain extent. A large part of being a parent is about modelling behaviours, choices and values that you consider to be good ones, and this can include food choices, exercise habits, how they treat others etc. etc.

As the child grows and gains independence they will take responsibility for more of the choices themselves, but parents will usually still apply boundaries of some sort until the child is an adult.

Fuck me.

Is it the healthiest and most responsible choice available? No.

Is it poison? Also no.

The only correct response OPs friend should make is "thank you for having him".

What a palaver over fecking ham.

It's threads like this that make me think I've been doing parenting wrong for the last 26 years. Not sure how my kids survived. But they did so...

GatoradeMeBitch · 03/05/2022 11:45

If she feeds her kid hotdogs or sausages she doesn't have a leg to stand on.

My son lived on this stuff as a child ( extremely fussy eater ) and even now I. His 20s he still buys the occasional pack !!!! Won’t do any harm

KeepYaHeadUp · 03/05/2022 12:05

I get Billy Bear ham isn't great nutritionally but neither's ham or any other sort of processsed meat with lots of nitrates etc. YANBU

My daughter has been eating Billy Bear meat since she was a child and she is 20 now and still loves it I'm male 66 I tried it a couple of times when I didn't have any corn beef left in the fridge I had to stop eating processed ham because I get IBS often just wondered what others think of younger children or grown up children eating Billy Bear meat all the time

Ffs their child won't get sick from eating it once! My mil proudly told me she fed my kids liver and bacon casserole when babysitting and I had to resist the urge to claw her eyes out..instead I just fake smiled and thanked her for having my kids

Why would liver and bacon casserole make you want to claw someone’s eyes out? It’s a bit old fashioned now, like steak and kidney pie, but it was a normal meal for me growing up.

unless you’re veggie or something what’s the issue?

It’s not something I would feed my children but if someone feed them it I wouldn’t say anything.

Exactly
