Argument over Billy Bear Ham

Yebbie · 02/05/2022 18:20

DC had friends over for play date, I provided lunch (baguettes, cucumber, cheese and billy bear ham, apple and yoghurt for pudding)

Yes it's processed and gimmicky, we are all vegetarian in this house apart from my 3 year old, so it was the only meat we had and they asked for ham in their baguettes.

Friend fuming I fed her son Billy bear ham, very dramatic about it, don't you know what's in that? I'm not one for processed food particularly, but my 3yo loves the stuff and has an otherwise balanced vegetarian diet so what's the issue, in my opinion. AIBU?

So you’re telling the OP a polygamous relationship with her and her DP probably isn’t going to work on the basis of ham compatibility?

Obviously not 😂

Just that, as a veggie myself, it seems a really unusual type of meat to choose to have in the house.

I get that if the DS tried it somewhere else, and then asks for it, it would hard to say no though.

Jacopo · 02/05/2022 19:41

Your friend has no manners.

Bagelsandbrie · 02/05/2022 19:42

If someone was kind enough to look after and feed my child for me I wouldn’t dare say anything about what they fed them! People are so entitled and rude nowadays.

TabithaTittlemouse · 02/05/2022 19:42

Can I be nosey and ask why you give your dc meat? Feel free not to answer because it’s pure nosiness rather than being judgemental etc.
Ours were brought up veggie and until they were older and chose to eat meat I wouldn’t have had any in the house.

RowanAlong · 02/05/2022 19:43

It’s grim, and I wouldn’t feed it to any 3 year old, even if they asked for it - but she was being rude to object. Shows the strength of objection to processed meat, but she should have been polite and thanked you for feeding her child…

RowanAlong · 02/05/2022 19:45

But as a vegetarian, it does seem an odd choice of meat…that’s if you’re veggie because of animal welfare reasons!

Don't! 😂this week tractors mean so much more. I could cope with Billy but tractors 😮

N0va · 02/05/2022 19:47

Used to love billy bear as a child! I now buy the turkey version (Najma do it) for DS but mainly for me

WyfOfBathe · 02/05/2022 19:48

YANBU, it's not ideal for every day but it's not going to hurt on an occasional play date.

Scrapings

It's made from 'mechanically recovered' meat . Fired off the bones sgen everything else has gone. Probably got a lot of salt in

I respect OP all the more for not enforcing her dietary preferences on the kid.

When

KittenKong · 02/05/2022 19:49

I worked on a deli when I was a student - it was very popular - very - and all the people buying it would say ‘I know it’s not great but… it’s fun/a treat/their favourite’.

it’s not like you were giving them beer and fags.

whynotwhatknot · 02/05/2022 19:49

oh well no more play dates for their son then

Bigboysmademedoit · 02/05/2022 20:12

I’ve never fed it to my kids - it’s rubbish. YABU.

jackstini · 02/05/2022 20:25

YANBU and if this is the only thing your friend has to worry about she should be grateful!
It's a tiny bit of processed food in a much bigger diet fgs

Beelezebub · 02/05/2022 20:25

YANBU

It’s not like you gave the kid a whole chocolate orange and a bag of wotsits.

SirChenjins · 02/05/2022 20:29

You’re feeding them a couple of slices of Billy Bear, not offering lines of coke - fgs. Your friend was rude.

Stomacharmeleon · 02/05/2022 20:34

I like it sparingly
As does the dog.....
But I also like corn beef, garlic sausage and chicken paste In a jar :)

Onlinemum22 · 02/05/2022 20:37

I don't understand why you'd even think about buying it 🤮 and I'm not veggie.
I wouldn't say anything to you but I wouldn't be coming round with my kid again 😂

I'm vegetarian, DS isn't. His favourite 'meat' used to be 'dinosaur ham'. I'm assuming Billy Beat has taken over from the dinosaur?!

DS is now an adult and will cook pork, chicken, beef etc and apparently cooks it really well.

Turns out dinosaur ham didn't hurt him or his tastebuds Wink

SaintVal · 02/05/2022 21:06

Apparently it's 66% pork and the rest is other 'stuff'.

I don't buy it but I do like it. I'm a child of the 70s and it reminds me of spam (or is it luncheon meat?). My Dad would say 'eat it up, it'll put hairs on your chest' 😂

Mariposista · 02/05/2022 21:07

I agree with her that the stuff is vile, unhealthy and not worth the money it costs, but seriously, what is wrong with mothers nowadays? Can't they keep their traps shut? It's YOUR house, if you want to feed crap under YOUR roof while providing free childcare, then that's YOUR business and she can feed her child what she deems fit in her own house. So rude! Opinions are like bums - important to have one, but better to keep them covered up.
