Anyone else find them depressing ?! Just another Sunday which I also can't stand. I love time off work but when I choose.

OP posts:

Bank holiday Mondays annoy me. There are 6 of us at work, three of us don't work Mondays the other three therefore get 7 days per year more leave than us. We all get 4.5 weeks annual leave but they get all the BHol Mondays in addition, I do get the Friday (sometimes 2 a year) and this year the Thursday but it really pi**es me off.

Do they get paid for the bank holidays? If so, legally you cannot be treated less favourably for working part time and therefore you should be paid a pro-rata bank holiday allowance for those that fall on your day off.

MargosKaftan · 02/05/2022 15:57

When I worked in a job share, I covered the Mondays, but the other half obviously didn't and missed a lot of holidays that way. HR added the bank holidays to our holiday allowance and then pro-rataed from that, and then if a bank holiday landed on our work day it was taken from our increased allowance. This did mean the other half of the job share got a little more flexibility than me.

If you dont work Mondays, you should have a percentage of the bank holidays in your holiday allowance, then have to use that leave towards any holidays landing on your work days.

Speak to HR.

I love them now. though as my daughter pointed out, it just means she spends the day working in her room as she still has to do five days (school) work in four. Yep I recall feeling this too when I worked full time - the Bank Holiday Mondays were always tainted as I knew Tuesdays would be a nightmare.

Herbarium · 02/05/2022 16:05

I like them for staying in and not having to do anything. Devote it to art, netflix, long bath, not getting dressed Grin

But not much if I had to go out anywhere. People all get the same idea and fill up the same stores, beauty spots, etc. Roads hectic too. Not my idea of a holiday in that sense. I understand it would be different if had kids as a whole other kettle of fish to consider, and it would be mean to make them stay indoors while I mess around with watercolours.

I love them. Just my two cents but if you'd rather be at work than at home/have free time to spend as you please then that says a lot about your life.

Awesome use of your bank holiday time there @PeakyBlinda clearly you’re living the dream. 🤣

nomistake · 02/05/2022 16:16

@LadyMonicaBaddingham oh bore off. Clearly it was a joke!

balalake · 02/05/2022 17:05

I don't, but I would like one in the Autumn, perhaps for November 11th.

I also would like it to be a day off for as many people as possible, so close large shops for example. Retail staff have to put up with enough, at least let them have the same days off and rest.

Bornsloppy · 02/05/2022 17:16

I liked them pre kids when I used to spend them mostly hungover. Now with small children I'm paying money to nursery so I can look after my own children for the day. Great.

I'd like to see them more spread out, this year seems particularly bad as Easter was so late.

HandlebarLadyTash · 02/05/2022 17:27

I don't work them so love them, I can plan to be doing stuff on Sat/Sun with the knowledge that I have a day to relax before going back to work.

Bluebuddha10 · 02/05/2022 17:32

My organisation gives bank hols as days, (in addition to annual leave), which you can take off when you want. You can take the bank hols off if you want, or you can work and use the days at other times of the year, when it suits you.

Rosebel · 02/05/2022 17:37

I usually love them but am ill today so that's a bit crap.
We don't generally go anywhere but I do love having the kids at home and it's nice having DH here for an extra day so he can help entertain our toddler.

LilacPoppy · 02/05/2022 17:39

@Pissyduck It's not really fair that a percentage of the population get a long weekend, can meet up with friends and family whilst anyone in the service industry gets to have an extra shitty time. you get the day holiday when you choose rather than at a prescribed time so you have the advantage.

OfstedOffred · 02/05/2022 17:41

I love them!

We usually see family, and the kids were happy as Larry playing with their cousins.

OverByYer · 02/05/2022 17:45

I wish they were more spread out. I haven’t done much this weekend so feels like a waste. I’d rather it be added to my holiday entitlement and take when I want. Would mean less congestion on the roads and lower prices for accommodation.

Leftbutcameback · 02/05/2022 18:03

I think it feels like that more when it's a Monday (which obviously most are). The Thursday and Friday ones in June should be good!

Leftbutcameback · 02/05/2022 18:05

I can't remember who told me it recently, but their employer now adds BH to their total leave and it's up to them when they take them. That's for full time staff as part time obviously treat BH differently anyway. I guess that only works if your office is open 24/7 or you WFH but for international firms it seems sensible.

PeakyBlinda · 02/05/2022 18:39

@Neverreturntoathread thanks Never, I am 😊

This isn't new.

I've been retired now for about 11 years but when I was working - part time - bank holidays were included in the yearly holiday entitlement.

All employers are entitled to do that and our offices most definitely were not open 24/7.
