Anyone got experience with noom?

mamma2013 · 01/05/2022 19:29

I've been wanting to get back in control with my weight and I know I could use free sites or do it myself but being completely honest I NEED the accountability and somehow paying forces me to stick to healthy ways.

I was about to sign back up to sw but came across Noom. Did a long questionnaire and it claims that not only will I be at my ideal weight by xmas but I will have tools to help me to stop comfort eating etc too.

Is it real? Any real life experience? Xxx

I looked at it but didn't find a single thing to tell me what they were giving me for my money.

SugarySaskia · 01/05/2022 19:34

i have found Noom to be a bit of a scam in the past and would stay well clear. They suggest extreme starvation diets which are completely inappropriate for most people.

Borgonzola · 01/05/2022 19:34

Yup, I lost a stone and half with it last year over a few months. I also needed the accountability, as watching the calories go in and earning more through plugging in my exercise really helped me see how important exercising was (I've never enjoyed it and am a shirker). I just wanted to know that I could do it as I'm now pregnant and know I'll need to do it again once bf is out of the way - not as dramatic but the structure etc will be needed for the extra pounds, and I don't ever want to be overweight again.

Happy to answer qs Smile

Borgonzola · 01/05/2022 19:35

I should add that I signed up with them but didn't buy a plan until they started offering it to me for about 80% off.

Borgonzola · 01/05/2022 19:35

I will also add that if it's accountability you're after, you might just be better off with my fitness pal, that's what I'll be doing next time.

Junipercrumble · 01/05/2022 19:36

Noom is really helpful. It teaches you about nutrition and supports you to lose weight healthily. I found it really useful and educational.

I also have the nutracheck app which is brilliant too.

HerRoyalNotness · 01/05/2022 19:38

A friend and I ended up doing it at the same time. She lost all her weight during the trial period and has kept it off. I did not and still haven’t 2.5yrs later. Basically it’s lean meat, lots of veg, good fats. I recommend looking for Dr Rachel Paul and use her program. She has a weekly menu you can adapt as needed and does the x number of plants, lean meats and fats with 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. I had lost about 15lbs doing it, but have not kept up the principles so put it on again. The problem is me. I’m starting it again, and looking to improve slowly and surely in my eating habits.

mamma2013 · 01/05/2022 19:40

Thank you that's really helpful. I am very tempted by it, is it alot of effort measuring and weighing? I used to do ww years and years ago very successfully but that was cooking for me alone so no issues then swapped to sw after kids which worked great as I tend to do big family meals. I was going to go back to sw but this caught my eye

In fact I remember why I was discouraged… it took me about 8mths to lose the weight, we went away on holiday, lots of walking, not lots of snacking and in 2 weeks I’d put back on about 7lbs! I gave up. It was so bizarre

Stokefolk · 01/05/2022 19:42

I really disliked noom
MyFitnessPal so much better

when you come to input foods into Noom, it hardly ever has them in its database as it’s mainly USA based, whereas my fitness pal had everything uk based and I found myself tracking food on MyFitnessPal rather than noom

noom does give you hints on how to lose weight, but they’re not hints you have t heard before. It’s interesting for the first couple weeks and then it’s a chore

the people you speak to also don’t reply in uk time so you can go hours without any replies

it actually really annoyed me, and I love a bit of routine, organisation and accountability

pooktline · 01/05/2022 19:44

Moth subject of mfp v noom I use nutra check

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 01/05/2022 19:45

I did it for 10 days recently (it was a 14 day trial). It was like having a nagging "friend" - got tired of all the woo and the "you've got this" crap. Maybe it's cultural as I am not American and don't share their "can do" spirit much.
There isn't much weighing and measuring as far as I can see - I just had to record weight and food/drink consumed. It got hold of my steps from my phone.
It wasn't for me.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/05/2022 19:47

I did it and it was interesting and some stuff has stayed with me but I didn't really lose any weight. That's more my fault though.

glebaisaword · 01/05/2022 19:48

I have just cancelled my noom trial, it gives you 2 weeks for a donation. On cancellation if offered me £19 a week instead of whatever the usual amount is. So you could do that and see what you get offered. But quite honestly I found it really patronising. Pointless articles about 'psych tips' and why psychology/noom works followed by quizzes. It encourages you to weigh in every day but I didn't understand why. It seems to talk about psychology a lot but the articles and quizzes all seem very basic and common sense, and didn't really get into the psychology at all. So if you've done any kind of diet before then you likely already know the theory behind diets - eat less calorific foods, don't beat yourself up if you slip, fill up on vegetables and proteins, walk or exercise more and limit high calorie snacks. There honestly didn't seem to be much to it beyond that. I think logging calories with my fitness pal or maybe nutracheck would have the same effect.

AwkwardPaws27 · 01/05/2022 19:49

I tried it. Having had issues with disordered eating in the past but wanting to lose weight due to BMI being in the overweight (25-30) range, the advertising and psychological aspects sounded helpful, with talk of it not being about "good" and "bad" foods.
In practice, it did seem to really be about "good" and "bad" foods though.
I stopped using it quite quickly as I found it triggering. I'm not sure any dieting apps / approachs are smooth sailing if you've had EDNOS or other EDs though!

HermioneWeasley · 01/05/2022 19:50

I found it annoying and cutesy

Howmuchwood · 01/05/2022 19:52

I did it for 3 months and lost nothing. The accountability part didn't work for me as was all bots and Americans that I personally couldn't relate to. I could ignore it far too easily and in the end it just annoyed me. Its also pretty expensive and I found the language they used to be really irritating at times (loads of weird acronyms and cringey fake overly friendly tone).

mamma2013 · 01/05/2022 19:59

I'm so glad I asked now. I dont want to be patronised and I do actually know what I'm doing really I just need a support network really..thanks all xx

Myownpapillon · 01/05/2022 20:02

I tried a free trial a while ago, it's quite similar to SW in what it encourages you to eat but with an added bot messaging you most days with encouragement ...not for me.

Loopytiles · 01/05/2022 20:03

I’ve done it: it’s just a straightforward low calorie diet, plus science-y articles about weight loss psychology and some tips.

the most useful info if you’re not knowledgeable about food is the red/amber/ green lists, which can be found online.

the ‘coaching’ is robotic and pointless.

Not much traffic in the chat streams.

the food catalogue is far inferior to My Fitness Pal.

if you have any kind of food issues, eg binge eating, it won’t help as it’s about restricting.

To be fair I did lose weight, because of the low calories.

Zelda93 · 01/05/2022 20:12

I currently signed up and I don't know why but it's working for me and I have lost a stone in 8 WK's but I like the accountability of it .. I get how it can annoy some as the lessons can be a bit annoying but I'm sticking with it for now as I have a holiday in 6 weeks and my scales are consistently going down so it's something right for me .

dontknowhow2help · 01/05/2022 22:46

16:8 was incredibly effective for me, so much easier than noom too!

Runworkeatsleeprepeat · 01/05/2022 22:54

@mamma2013

Look up Anna Wallace on Instagram or the weight loss Academy she is ace I joined her reset in Sept 2021 and have lost a stone. No good or bad food etc just healthy nutritious food with lots of recipies etc weekly coaching. She's doing a new reset soon. There is a specific Facebook group for it.

Runworkeatsleeprepeat · 01/05/2022 22:57

Should have said 4 week reset is £17 then it's a one off £97 to join the academy after that 3 x weekly exercise, loads of recipies. The Facebook group is really friendly and supportive and it's a way of life not a diet as such.
