Plants at the entrance are the adult equivalent of sweets at the till

As I swiftly approach 40, I find myself almost Incapable of walking past the plants at the front of supermarkets.

Am I being unreasonable in feeling like a small child incapable of avoiding the sweets at the checkout?

Today I went to Morrisons and came home with three climbers, they were only £2 each! Yesterday it was Aldi and some fuschias, four for £3ish.

Morrisons is dangerous and I need my non plant loving partner with me to guide me away from them.

Ikea has also as I become older become too dangerous to visit if I don’t have a carer to hand. Add Gardening centres and DIY/decorating shops. Sigh.

EarringsandLipstick · 01/05/2022 12:35

Brilliant 😂 I agree totally.

The problem for me is that I buy the plants & then don't get around to potting them up. And I keep doing it!!

honeyytoast · 01/05/2022 12:43

I’m the same with flowers lol

Bornsloppy · 01/05/2022 12:44

100%. I went to b&q for some polyfilla, came out with two new house plants. I'm an elder millennial cliche.

Moonface123 · 01/05/2022 12:45

Yes, same here, l am a plantaholic.
The climbers from Morrisons are very good value, quite small and can take a year or two to get going but then really take off. Sometimes l pot them on in a bigger pot and then plant them out the following Spring as it allows the root ball to get bigger and they stand a better chance of surviving.

TeapotOfWine · 01/05/2022 13:07

If my partner sees me thinking about buying a houseplant he says "Don't do it, it deserves to live!" Which does usually guilt me into leaving it for someone a bit better with plants to find...

Sunflowersinthewind · 01/05/2022 13:09

I just came back from the shops with two fuchsias, a thyme and two gazanias. Yesterday was begonias and impatiens. YANBU

ConsuelaHammock · 01/05/2022 13:12

I bought 2 zz plants because I saw them in the window of an independent supermarket. I already have 2 but these were £3.99. I couldn’t resist.

billy1966 · 01/05/2022 13:14

Totally agree.

Am so disappointed at this time of year if there isn't a nice display to have a gander at.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 01/05/2022 13:26

YANBU 😂🤣😂

FreezyFreezy · 01/05/2022 13:42

I'm not so bothered about the flowers but love other things for the garden like lights and pots etc so going to places like B&M and Home Bargains is the equivalent to a sweet or toy shop for me.

SisyphusDad · 01/05/2022 13:46

The only thing I hear from them is "Please no! Not me! I'm too young to die!"

As you might guess, I'm not good with plants.

FurForksSake · 01/05/2022 13:47

I quite like the sad looking plants, I definitely see myself as a plant saviour.

However, my skill may not match my ambition!!

I bought colourful metal pots in b and m yesterday and then plants to go in them from Aldi next door!

I do love a browse, dunelm and the range too.

YANBU! Morrisons is the worst for this, I very rarely come home with nothing. They're usually brilliant value too.

Dahlietta · 01/05/2022 15:11

For me, they're the actual equivalent of sweets at the till. Both my kids LOVE plants. The little one wept bitterly last week until I agreed to buy him a bloody primula...

Sunflowersinthewind · 01/05/2022 16:25

My son is the same. He has 31 cacti in his room, saves his pocket money up solely to buy them

Fairislefandango · 01/05/2022 16:26

Nope, I'd be much more tempted by the sweets. I am obviously not a proper adult Grin

RealBecca · 01/05/2022 16:29

Even better are the reduced perennials.

Me too!!

Chasingsquirrels · 01/05/2022 16:34

Aldi has had some fantastic value plants recently. I've had 3 clematis, a rhododendron and a hydrangea.

cigarettesNalcohol · 01/05/2022 16:34

Morrison's plant section is irresistible. YANBU. I can't walk past it either and end up spending 45mins deciding what to buy when I had promised myself not to buy anything. I have to force myself to walk by without looking or I come back with more than one plant/shrub etc.

Arrrrrgggghhhhh... why do they do this to us ? It's totally the sweet/child equivalent. You're right.

lunar1 · 01/05/2022 16:38

My Morrisons has £5 fruit trees right now, I keep getting one whenever I go in 🤦🏻‍♀️

Oh my, the reduced perennials... don't get me started. She types salivating 🤤

MrsJamin · 01/05/2022 16:56

Hahaha you're my tribe. I sound all worthy saying to DH that it's my turn to go to the supermarket and I just go and peruse all the plants. Wilkos is bad too! Just go in for a packet of plasters, come out with some bamboo canes, several packets of seeds and a dahlia. Buying stuff for the garden can be so expensive, you really do have to be thrifty and look for the bargains. I really want some star jasmine at the moment so have been looking everywhere for them. The larger B&M 's can be really good too.
