Plants at the entrance are the adult equivalent of sweets at the till

As I swiftly approach 40, I find myself almost Incapable of walking past the plants at the front of supermarkets.

Am I being unreasonable in feeling like a small child incapable of avoiding the sweets at the checkout?

Today I went to Morrisons and came home with three climbers, they were only £2 each! Yesterday it was Aldi and some fuschias, four for £3ish.

Not noticed this so ..not at all! I never buy plants and am disappointed when I'm bought them as presents. I just see it as another thing to do / look after.

I quite like the sad looking plants, I definitely see myself as a plant saviour.

However, my skill may not match my ambition!!

My husband and friend are like this.

They call it "Lazarus gardening" and view these plants as a challenge.

They need to be pence or no more than a pound, completely dead on their feet.

Husband/friend brings them back to life and are delighted with themselves.

It's a REAL gardeners sport.😂

@FurForksSake crucial question, did Morrisons have any clematis? misses the learning moment of the thread entirely…

scrivette · 02/05/2022 17:25

Absolutely! I was a bit grumpy this morning when Lidl didn't have any outside.

They did! :)

National Trust had some temptations today, but compared to supermarket prices...

I went to Aldi on Saturday and came home with a half dead pot of lavender. Can’t resist them but only when they’re cheap or on offer!

B&Q had some lovely Chinese money plants, think they were about £6 each. I wanted them but couldn’t justify the spend. Came back the week after and they were in bargain corner for about £2 each! Bargain. I got 2.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/05/2022 17:45

I got a four inch high, somewhat crispy Monstera Deliciosa from Waitrose for a pound (most of that price was for the pot, I suspect) this time last year.

It's five foot tall now. Which pleases me greatly, as it does every time I see a new, glowing light green leaf emerging into the light. I may feel slightly less happy when the bugger has taken over my entire living room, but at present, I just feel like a proud plant Mum with her babies slowly spreading over every surface in the house.

It doesn't make me fat or cost money at the dentist. They just need to make the plants better and expand the range. There are a bunch of shelves at the tills that could be used for small succulents, for a start.

MrsJBaptiste · 02/05/2022 18:12

Sweets for me! 🍬🍬🍬

I bloody hate gardening although do admit to having a small succulent in the kitchen 🪴

DoraTheScottishExplorer · 02/05/2022 18:27

My boyfriend has had to drag me away from the little olives trees outside Aldi for 2 weeks now, is argument being we don't even eat olives, I don't see the issue, I just want the tree.

userxx · 02/05/2022 18:40

I love going to the supermarket at this time of year, don't bother buying food just plants!

Cherrysoup · 02/05/2022 18:45

I’m the same, first thing I did last week on approaching the entrance was to put 2 climbers in my trolley.

Apparently shouldn't buy yourself a money plant, they are only to be gifted.

My SIL gave me one about 8 years ago, its a monster now and a bit of a statement plant as it is so unusually large.

I have DH taking clippings regularly, that I gift to others.

Mine gifted itself to me.

I was in work during lockdown and thought I'd check on the plants scattered around the site/chuck some water over them, move them into daylight where possible, that kind of thing. At the last plant, it rewarded me by dropping two tiny leaves onto the floor, so I picked them up, took them home, stuck them into an eggcup-full of compost, watered once on a windowsill and then forgot about it for the next 18 months.

It's now a sturdy little tree about 10 inches high.

The idiot cats gift us other plants - largely by chucking the original ones in their pots onto the floor so they need to be split and repotted.

Maybe that makes it a luckier money plant than usual?

DameHelena · 02/05/2022 19:08

Fairislefandango · 01/05/2022 16:26

Nope, I'd be much more tempted by the sweets. I am obviously not a proper adult Grin

And me. Lindt three for two, that’s my main weakness.

Wow!, sounds like you have a monster like mine on your way.

NorthernChinchilla · 02/05/2022 20:13

My DH cries whenever I go near a shop at the moment, as we genuinely don't have any more room for plants!
My team know if I offer to go to Morrison's for them at lunchtime, I don't care about feeding them, I'll just come back with 5689524568 plants.

The nice lady that serves there knows me by name 😳

Hippopotas · 02/05/2022 20:14

SisyphusDad · 01/05/2022 13:46

The only thing I hear from them is "Please no! Not me! I'm too young to die!"

As you might guess, I'm not good with plants.

😂

VonWeasel · 02/05/2022 21:27

OP. Are you me?!! I can't stop myself either. It's like some kind of plant addiction and I used to hate gardening until reaching 40 so go figure! Three fuschias leapt out at me in Morrisons today. I also succumbed to another online offer so have 999 summer bulbs winging their way to me. I have a lot of planting to do! Might even take a day of annual leave. I am so middle aged (and loving it!). Enjoy your gardening everyone 😃

Mosaic123 · 02/05/2022 21:32

DH and I bought a monkey puzzle tree today. Only a little one as we have a balcony and no garden. We hope to give it to one of our sons when it gets too big. We were planning on going out for the day but when plant shopping instead. Of course it needed a substantial and stylish pot to live in.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 02/05/2022 21:35

Haha, yes completely agree. My kids try to stear me in the opposite direction when they spot plants in the shops.

Penguinsaregreat · 02/05/2022 21:41

I'm the same. My favourite is a garden centre not too far away from me. I have resisted going so far but I will be going soon. I didn't think I had bought anything but realise I have bought; a Honeysuckle in Aldi, 2 wooden trelises, a mirror, and a rose from Peter Beale.
I know when I get to my favourite garden centre I will be like a cat in catnip.

JudgeJ · 02/05/2022 21:43

RealBecca · 01/05/2022 16:29

Even better are the reduced perennials.

I often buy reduced plants, supermarkets are poor at caring for their plants, I recall buying a plant for 10p, almost dead but as it was Easter I said I would ressurrect it and it's still going strong about 12 years on.
The other day I noticed people buying clematis from Aldi, they had the most enormous flowers on but these plants are raised under glass and will never look like that again!

JudgeJ · 02/05/2022 21:45

Blushingviolets · 02/05/2022 17:23

@FurForksSake crucial question, did Morrisons have any clematis? misses the learning moment of the thread entirely…

Aldi had loads if you've one nearby.

Gingernaut · 02/05/2022 21:47

My Aldi does it backwards.

They bring the plants in to the exit as they're closing up, so you're passing them on your way out.

ValBiro · 02/05/2022 21:49

I bought a fiddle leaf fig from Lidl (tongue twister!) for a tenner 6 years ago, it only came up to my waist. It is now a 7ft beast and I feel immensely smug and proud!

Yanbu @FurForksSake but I am trying a 'no buy' summer for the garden this year, as I've squeezed so much in over the years and there is literally no more space. It's all coming up really nicely! But I really do have to resist when I see them there at the front of the shop!
