Concern for Ukrainian family

Happyface246 · 01/05/2022 10:31

Hi. Does anyone know if there are any official channels that I can make a concern about a Ukrainian family being housed? It’s a private agreement but the person who is taking the mother and daughter in is a known alcoholic with anger issues.

Your local council possibly? I work for a local authority and we are checking the accommodation and welfare. Give them a call Tuesday

WindsChange · 01/05/2022 10:33

Contact the local council / safeguarding for vulnerable adults.

TheGirlWithTheGreyBunny · 01/05/2022 11:20

I’m sure they will be safer with the alcoholic than in a city where they were going to be killed

Geezabreak82 · 01/05/2022 11:22

Contact the council and raise your concerns with social services. I wish councils had been funded to deliver a properly resourced resettlement scheme in the first place. There's going to be so many issues because of the way this scheme has been set up.

They aren't the only options, though, are they? And 'it's better than nothing' isn't good enough, especially when we're talking about a vulnerable woman and child.

There are likely to be deeply traumatized people coming over, it isn't about being "safer" it is about being in an environment that doesn't damage them further.

What a horrific thing to say!

There will be a way to raise a safeguarding concern on your local council website.

Are you always a twat?

Happyface246 · 01/05/2022 16:10

Thanks everyone I’ll contact the council on Tuesday…and yes I agree with the twat comment! Unbelievable!

Just an update I contacted safeguarding at my local council who said it was nothing to do with them and to phone the police! Bit if nothing has happened yet the police won’t do anything 😱

Did you speak to social services, or whoever is administering the Homes for Ukraine scheme?

ssd · 04/05/2022 16:55

This thing is just open to abuse, isnt it. As if these poor souls haven't been through enough.

Maytodecember · 04/05/2022 16:55

There was an item on the Jeremy Vine show ( Radio 2) — apparently quite a few violent, god knows what other problems, men have been found registered to host Ukrainian people. Given that the vast majority are traumatised women and children this is very scary.

What a bizarre view. Its not an either or situation.

iheartmybeachhut · 04/05/2022 17:11

Total shambles if this correct.

Violetparis · 04/05/2022 17:12

Maybe try contacting your MP through their local office.

SmallElephants · 04/05/2022 17:14

i work in adult social work and yes it should absolutely be their concern!!! Call back but this time pursue whoever has local authority oversight of the homes scheme.
also your local councillor.

DurhamDurham · 04/05/2022 17:14

Are you always so lacking in compassion and empathy? The fact that they're safe from being killed in their home country doesn't mean they should have to put up with living in a dangerous situation here.

This is important. The HFU team ought to know and can do a welfare check. If it was the people who are administering the scheme that you spoke to and they brushed you off try a local refugee charity. They can’t interfere with the placement but they can help the guests know what their rights are and that there is help available and help them find somewhere new to live if necessary.

Are you under the impression that everyone in the whole of Ukraine is going to be killed? I think the situation is a bit more variable than that.
People fleeing war need safety in their new homes just as much as anyone else does whether it’s protection from domestic violence or smoke alarms.

TheGirlWithTheGreyBunny · 01/05/2022 11:20

Oh? So that’s ok then? As long as traumatised people are alive they should put up with living with the constant fear of unpredictable anger .

twat

Wow

Onwards22 · 04/05/2022 18:51

How do you know this?

Is it someone you’re in contact with so you can keep an eye on things to be able to ring the police if necessary?

I thought they had to be thoroughly checked.
It’s worrying this has gone under the radar as I’m sure there are some predatory people out there using this to their advantage.

Obviously not all alcohols are violent or bad people but I would speak to the Ukrainian family and give them your phone number and the number of the UK police so if anything does happen they can contact someone.

Happyface246 · 04/05/2022 19:04

I spoke to the safeguarding adult team who then put me through to a social worker who told me to speak to the police…. I’ll phone back tomorrow to see if I can speak to the homes for ukraine people thanks everyone.
